OT- Game of Thrones S04E04 @ 9:00: Oathkeeper

Submitted by Eastside Maize on

It's that time of the week again. I love how some of the characters that I hated are now among my favorites. The Hound and The Kingslayer are the best examples of this. Little finger is a weasel and will use anyone to get on the Iron Throne. Dudes and dudettes, No Book Spoilers please. Enjoy!

Is heavily diverging from the books. Won't go further, so as not to spoil anything for non literate types (NTTAWWT). I'm not generally a fan of the show going a different direction, which they seem  to be doing more and more.

It's not even the same story any more...

I'm popping my popcorn and heading to westeros.org...

I also post on towerofthehand...

there is an interesting debate to be had about releasing information that isn't even in the books, but I don't think I'm able to handle it right now...

ps.  nonbook readers are unsullied...

I read that one occasionally too, but not very often anymore. When I was reading the last book I was on there quite a bit trying to glean nuggets of info, and was duly sucked in.

Also, I'm pretty sure I know exactly the two things you're referring to about info not yet divulged in the books. Sadly, can't go there on here...

One thing that is kind of cool about them doing things a little different is that it keeps us book readers guessing as well.  I think it is smart on their part.

The show of course has to diverge, but after season one, I predicted to myself that there would come a point where a (perhaps somewhat) major character who was killed off in the books would not be killed off in the show (because ratings) and the divergence would instantly widen by miles.

Hasn't happened yet, but I can smell it.

this whole Craster's keep is a fucked up place to be right now... and they have Ghost?  intersting to see how the episode ends.

As a book reader, I'm gonna say that I actually think these changes are pretty perfect because they sort of fill in the gaps as to missing information - like having Locke/Vargo up there sets up him mysteriously disappearing before shit goes down and returning to the Boltons, for example. Great episode!

Awesome episode.  As someone who's reading the books but behind the show, the final scene was interesting - I can't wait to catch up in the books because there's clearly some deviation there... Unless Captain Icicle is a special guest POV character.

There was a lot of controversy on the rape scene last week and I have to say, I think it was a mistake by the showrunners - Jamie's redemption arc is tough to swallow/accept when he goes and rapes a chick after being all about preventing rape and being monogamous.  Though, perhaps it's the beginning of the end of he and Cersei, which would take him back down a tragic, lonely arc which may perhaps be fitting.

4 episodes I wouldn't have been very excited about happenings north of the wall, but now I'm super pumped for next week and the (hopeful!) reunion of some Starks.  But, I probably shouldn't expect it.

Thanks book readers for keeping this thread spoiler/hint/not so subtle reference free.

So the 'race' of white walkers at the end of the episode isn't overtly described in the first five books???

It is clear in the books that they are different from the wights (the dead guy, his horse, and so on), but IIRC it isn't clear exactly how so. I think most readers of the books were not expecting to see them appear as basically a different, demonic species, but it makes sense. This is a world where dragons exist, after all. And demons are obviously an integral part of medieval French religion and mythology, the source of much of Martin's fantasia.

Also, spitballing here on Dany.  This isn't the first time she's gone for the jugular in the serving justice realm.

I'm starting to think we're seeing her fatal flaw (please no book comments on this!).  It's already been suggested that she will have trouble controling her dragons and she has shown no mercy*.  Also, during tonights episode I was thinking "ok, so is she going to rule Mereen for the time being?  How is that really going to work?"

*Though, having mercy when possible would be a Stark trait and certainly it's been shoved down our throats that the Stark way is not the way to win the game of thrones.
