OT - Game of Thrones S04E01: Two Swords

Submitted by MGoBender on

Spoiler Note: This worked in past seasons, so let's try again.  Please, no book spoilers.  If you're unsure if you're hinting too much at something from the books, respectfully keep it to yourself.  Assumption here is that everyone in this threads is up to date on the TV show and no more.  Those of us watching the show before reading will return the favor when the series inevitably passes George's writing :)

MGoBitching Note: We've officially hit the MGoDeadPeriod with regards to the big sports, so there's gonna be off-topic threads.  See the title?  This thread is about a TV episode.  If you don't like that, post your complaint in the Moderator Sticky, not here.    Mucho gracias.

Here we go!!!

...I was really curious about what happened to Edmure.  Did he spend the night with his bride?  Did he avoid death unlike everyone else?  Was his "pretty" wife even a real Frey girl or just a set up?

Upon watching the episode a second time, I'm pretty sure that in the post-mortem scene with Ross Bolton & Walder Frey that it was casually mentioned that Edmore spent his wedding night in a dungeon.  That still makes me wonder if the wedding was legitimate or not.

Without any spoilers, the book does state that he is kept as a prisoner by the Frey's so that he can produce an heir that will take over River Run, same as Sansa and Tyrion. This is stated during the red wedding scene in the book so not something way ahead.

I am going to be a DB

I would keep book type material out of the discussion, go on the book, leave it be...

So far we have seen very little and we know he was in a dungeon.  I would leave it at that.

love you...

As for tonights show

Arya is my girl!

I like the new daario that they cast!

its always tough with a first episode so I won't complain to much, but it did feel rather choppy

Bronn and Oberyn would make a sweet fight...

Michigan Shirt,

How can you so blatantly put something from the books into this discussion?  Maybe you didn't spoil a shocking turn of events, but you sure as hell revealed something that hasn't been shown yet.

Seriously, dude.  Not cool.

...although Michigan Shirt maybe offered a bit much, it was hardly a spoiler.  More of a "point of clarification" if you will.  Even the most die-hard fan of the TV series will have to admit that sometimes things are lost in the translation from 100+ page books into 1 hour TV shows.

As long as it happens after the fact (or at least concurrently) then what's the harm to the discussion in citing the books as a further point of reference?  Presumably you came here curious to find out more (not less).  If one prefers ignorance then perhaps the internet is not the place for you.

we have seen the show shift from the books enough by now that we can actually call the rest of Edmure's evening into question, can't we?

lord knows I crossed this line enough last year that I have a better understanding this year (slow learner I guess) so I will just repeat what has already been said:  it is best not to add material from the books into a conversation about the TV show; even the mention of someone still being alive later on can be a spoiler, and we are at a point wherein the two are not exactly mutually exclusive buy they certainly aren't synonymous

Well, I come here to discuss the tv show. I know the internet is playing with fire and I've been burned a few times, but I hope in a small community people can respect the idea of not putting book details in that are yet to be addressed in the show.
Plus, I'm reading the books as well, so differences can be spoilers for the books.
My apologies to Shirt if I came off a bit DB, but it's frustrating at times when book readers think something isn't a spoiler, but don't have the perspective of not knowing what is and isn't important bc you haven't gotten there yet.

No worries, I only meant to clarify a little bit as to what was in the book and as someone pointed out earlier, was mentioned in the show, that he spent his wedding night in the dungeon. It can be difficult picking out a few seconds of lines in a show that may be difficult to hear at times, as opposed to something you actually read. I honestly didn't think it was any sort of spoiler at all so sorry if it came off that way.

Just as a friendly reminder from a mod, we did talk about this in the Tigers thread today and this will apply to threads for "Game Of Thrones" as well. We should be respecting such threads because it is the offseason and this is something which has a considerable following and tends to generate discussion among users. As the OP noted, if you aren't a fan, that's fine, but we are going to start monitoring for "uncivil" behavior in threads like these.

Arya Stark: Harbringer of Death.

I'm always amazed at how much of the trailers before the season starts come from the first episode of the season.  Makes me excited and feel like I know nothing (...JS).

Great "re-set" epsidoe with the Arya pay-off at the end.  Interesting to see if Arya/Hound get to the Erie and if Littlefinger is there.

Loved it. Really enjoy the set up for what this season may be about. The final scene with arya and the hound was terrific, really like their developing relationship. Also, I have found myself feeling more and more sympathy for Jamie and liking his character more as the show goes on, never thought I would think that. Overall great first episode, now we just have to get arya to slowly stick that sword through Geoffrey, Tywinn, Cersei, and all those bastards' throats that were involved in the red wedding

Guh, just caught the Two Swords connection.  The obvious reference at the start of the episode, but also referring to the two swords of Arya and the Hound at the end.  Great episode.

I think the writers are doing a great job of weaving many threads together into one thematic episode...

the two swords is also Daario and grey wind (holding swords as a gamble), the two lannister men in the brothel,  bronn juxtaposed to Oberlyn, and probably more that I am not thinking of off hand...

I'm really excited about his character in this season. He was just an awesome spark to the second half of the third book. After the Red Wedding, George Martin really needed another balance to the Lanister power. Can't wait to see how they develop the Martell storyline.

I love reading up on everyones after thoughts and seeing people missing an important event... well, it will become aparent later for non book folk.

also, it was quite weird at first seeing Michiel huisman take over for Daario Naharis. Gonna be a bit taking use to but otherwise great opening episode. Stuff is coming up quick this season ;)

Yeezus

You think they will get all of Joffrey's wedding into Episode 2, or maybe that spills over into Episode 3?

Based on the preview for next week, Bran's quest to find the three-eyed raven will be furthered as well.  Can't wait.

Can't get over how funny that is!

I'm very interested to see where Jamie's character goes from here.  He's the first person to openly defy his father (who may now be realizing that despite "winning" the war, his name & legacy is in quite the tenuous position ).  He's also fealt the wrath of Cercei, who's lost much of her power with her father as hand and Margaery's ever-increasing influence on Joffrey.

Which leaves everyone's favorite imp, Tyrion!  Though next week's previews and the season's trailers seem to suggest a damper is quickly going to be put on that.

Love the political drama in GoT.
