OT: FSU G Scores 30 in Final 4:38 of Loss

Submitted by MGoChippewa on

Florida State was trailing Miami (YTM) 62-47 with 4:38 to play last night in their ACC matchup in Miami.  That's when freshman G Xavier Rathan-Mayes did something that might be hard to do in a video game.  He went on to score 30 points in the game's remaining minutes...and the Seminoles still lost, 81-77!  Rathan-Mayes hit six threes, two lay-ups and eight free throws in the final 4:38 of the contest, finishing with a season-high 35 points.  It was his second 35-point game of the season, with the other coming against UNC in January.

He was the #30 recruit in the country in the class of 2014, per Rivals, with offers from a whole host of schools, including Kentucky, Illinois and UConn.  Michigan didn't recruit him, as far as I can tell.  While he has gone off a few times this season, you could definitely call him a chucker.  Rathan-Mayes attempts 12 FGs per game, 5.2 from three and only shoots .411/.274/.694.  To his credit, he also averages 4.5 APG, against 3.5 TOs.

If he scored at that clip the entire game, he would have scored about 260 points. This has to be up there with Reggie Miller's 8 points in 9 seconds performance against the Knicks.

He just keeps throwing up his hands like "WTF". Some of it is kind of like "WTF, play some tighter defense on him." But at the same time, it is also kind of like "yeah, he's hitting the shot anyway, what are ya gonna do?"

What made that moment especially great - even with the 30 points - was the blown away look on Jim Larranaga's face towards the end of the clip. He didn't even appear to be blinking, at least not to me. That run made his personal eFG% for the game 68.42% compared to about 58% for the rest of the team excluding Rathan-Mayes' stats.

I give this kid a ton of credit, those weren't easy shots either. I do wanna say if you watch the some of his 3's he carried the ball several times especially on the last one. Its amazing how carrying or traveling isn't called much anymore, but happens every minute. The famous Lebron jump stop eveyone uses its a travel.

I think Bernard King did something ridiculous like that when I was a kid but I don't know any of the exact data.  I doubt it was 30 in 5 minutes - that's ridiculous.  As someone else wrote above I. Thomas went off for a much shorter period of time as well.
