OT: Friday POSBANG (what are you listening to?)
Happy Friday everyone! Right around now is when the winter doldrums reach their peak. Areas close to Lake Michigan should see more than half a foot of snow in the next day, and the UP will get in excess of a foot, because obviously. Looks like cross-country skiing is in the works for me this weekend. What are your weekend plans?
From time to time it's nice to refresh our stale music libraries with a few fresh songs or artists. I always enjoy hearing something a little off the beaten path. We've all heard the Beach Boys, Metallica, Toby Keith, etc. How about your favorite, less-well-known bands? I offer two:
Chaotech: A rather interesting metal outfit out of Helsinki, Finland. They've come out with one EP, €xi$t, and a couple singles. I strongly recommend listening to the EP straight-through in its entirety if you happen to be a headbanger. Tracks "Apparatus of Reason" and "Decreation" are particularly noteworthy (both Soundcloud links).
Barilari: Argentinian rocker. Adrian Barilari was one of the founders of the heavy metal movement in Argentina back in the 80s as a member of the group Rata Blanca. His current solo project is reminiscent of perhaps early-80s Iron Maiden. In addition to "Abuso de Poder" embedded below, I also suggest the track "Algo Magico"
Anyways, given the diversity of tastes on the board, it's pretty likely that if you suggest some of your favorite music (of any type or genre), at least one other poster will appreciate it. Happy listening!
Edit: By the way, a posbang thread isn't a posbang thread unless you posbang people. So posbang away!

Spooky Tooth -Spooky Two and Jimi Hendrix hits!! All of them!!

Bop-era jazz (Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk) until my deadlines are met.
In the afternoon, I'll be in the mood for some old-fashioned Detroit high energy: MC5, Wayne Kramer, The Racketeers, Sonic's Rendezvous Band. Kick out the jams and let it snow.

here in my office today. My stuff is mostly a mix of rock and rap. A lot of Linkin Park, The Black Keys (who's El Camino is a hell of an awesome album), Muse, Smashing Pumpkins, Jay-Z, Dre, and Eminem as the most frequent artists on the playlist. But I've got a ton of older stuff and random one hit wonders and old school rap as well. Currently playing is the cover of "Blue Monday" by Orgy. Prior to that was Sad But True by Metallica and Welcome to the Jungle by GNR.
Happy Friday and have a great weekend everyone!

Slug is easily one of my favorite rappers. Atmosphere is perfect for a nice lazy Friday at work, that's what I'm kickin' right now too. Love it.

The Trololo video first appeared on some sites beginning on 21 February 2010, the most prominent of those being the "Trololo" website trololololololololololo.com that helped push the meme into popular awareness, receiving more than 3,000,000 hits in its first month.[23][24] It gained prominence on 3 March during a segment on The Colbert Report[25] after appearing on Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld a handful of times over the previous couple of weeks. It was also parodied by actor Christoph Waltz on Jimmy Kimmel Live![26] as well as Craig Reucassel on the Australian TV show "The Chaser", and in September 2011 on the animated American television series Family Guy in its tenth season premiere episode, "Lottery Fever".[27]
The "Trololo" meme in turn re-ignited interest in Khil's singing career aside from his vocalised performance; for a time, the "Trololo" website[28] included a petition for Khil to come out of retirement to perform on a world tour.
I haven't heard anything about it. It's nice, of course! Thanks for good news! There is a backstory about this song. Originally, we had lyrics written for this song but they were poor. I mean, they were good, but we couldn't publish them at that time. They contained words like these: "I'm riding my stallion on a prairie, so-and-so mustang, and my beloved Mary is thousand miles away knitting a stocking for me". Of course, we failed to publish it at that time, and we, Arkady Ostrovsky and I, decided to make it a vocalisation. But the essence remained in the title. The song is very playful – it has no lyrics, so we had to make up something for people would listen to it, and so this was an interesting arrangement.—Eduard Khil

When you're constructing a backpacking stove out of aluminum cans, it's only fitting to listen to metal. On the playlist today is As I Lay Dying, Dream Theater, and my personal favorite band, Dulcamara. Corny video, great song

Just finished listening to the most recent UMHoops podcast. David Merritt, Zack Novak, Nicole Auerbach. Always nice to hear how Zack is doing, sounds like he's having a great time playing in Europe.
There was some talk about that game that happened on Tuesday, but it was overall an entertaining, upbeat podcast!

My Bloody Valentine - m b v
February 15th, 2013 at 11:19 AM ^
I call B.S. Everyone says they listen to My Bloody Valentine, but nobody listens to My Bloody Valentine. It's just a lot of noises all mixed together, which is a really cool method that every good band after copied, but it's still like the musical equivalent of a blogger who does nothing but have conversations with his bolded subconscious.

And really, MBV is not all that chaotic or what have you. If MBV approximates a demarcation point where music turns to noise, then basically anything remotely experimental (which is exactly how I would have classified MBV in their prime) would be the production equivalent of white noise. In other words, "Turn that noise off!!"
February 15th, 2013 at 4:21 PM ^
No no you misunderstand me. It's not that it all turns to noise. Like the bolded subconscious...
Who me?
yeah you, is your point made so I can continue?
Yes, but first when's the last time you even listened to this album?
Today, after I saw it mentioned in this thread.
Okay continue.
...it's a really cool device that makes the music more interesting. They...fill space with sound--different instruments coming in at every possible tones tha could make up that chord. First time you hear it you are like "That is amazing!" However it's really a tool, not the basis for extended and repetitive listening until the end of time. The things that other bands went on to do with this device were the really awesome things. SO many bands mention MBV in their list of influences because they used that device, but I think those bands all used it to greater purpose than MBV did. It's like appreciate Darwin but that's not even 1/4 of what evolution is, you know?
