Marshall looking impressive against WVU - lead 7-3 with 2:30 minutes remaining in the 1st.
Peppers at 10, which seems low.
I just heard the play-by-play guy say "see you won't ever see michigan line up in an I-formation and power it inside....you won't see that tomorrow against notre dame"
we did this several times. and it was only 6 days ago
My dear sweet mother, who repeatedly called Denard "Tate" last week, knew better than that.
Yep, I threw something at the TV! Typical ESPN announcers GRRRRR
Heard this too.
What a stupid comment.
RR had a killer FB at WVU in Owen Schmitt, and I'm sure they lined up in I-Form then as well.
Plus like you said, Michigan lined up this way several times last week. With the interior of our Oline hopefully being the strength of the offense, I think this is something that will come in handy to have throughout the season. Especially against inferior opponents that we can out muscle.
I really wish they'd stop with all the anti-Michigan crap. I used to like WVU - they're a natural underdog.
They started the season running back to back plays out of the I.
jeebus, gilmore. nice stanford education.
Obviously they didn't watch the drive @ Iowa last year where we went I all the way down the field until Minor fumbled.
Ugh, I don't mind that those people are morons. I mind that recruits and other folks will hear the morons and mimic their sentiment.
Go Coogs in the late game. Hell, by the time I get into Houston (4 hour drive), I could probably get to Robertson by the 2nd quarter.
What do you think, should I lay the -20 with Houston?
Bite at all on the O/U 75?
I'm going with a tiny bet on the under, half because its gone from 72 to 75.5 this week and half because i have a fridge full of beer and nothing else to do
lol, i'd like to say I've never done that routine, except I have beers in the fridge, nothing to do and I just took WVA -7.5 on the second half line.
75 seems sooooooo high a total. I'll be pulling for the Under to hit for you!
Really just trying to help pass the time. Noon tomorrow cannot get here soon enough.
Marshall's defense is looking very suspect. More specifically, the secondary looks abysmal. I wonder if maybe, just maybe, that same secondary wasn't any better last weekend?
Marshall stops WVU on 4th and 1 within the 10. huge stop
before he crossed into the endzone... it is very close.
I wasn't sure at first, but I replayed it on my DVR and the receiver let the football go at the one yard line before he scored. Should be a touchback and WVU ball
Anyone know if the video will hit the internets tonight or if I'll have to wait until tomorrow.
I just need to know if I should keep refreshing the page for updates every five minutes for the rest of the night or not.
Said he is downloading it into youtube format and it will be in that thread in about 20 mins.
Nick it's Friday night how come you're not out pickin' up chicks? :-P
is just slamming WVU now. Weak Mountaineer punt means Marshall might score again
That blank look on Bill Stewart's face suggests things are going to get real interesting as the last of RR's players walk out the door.
In case Marshall makes this stand up, they'll be doing crazy business all night. Coach Stew will be the second most-hated man in West Virginia.
I don't know man, Marshall's defense is looking good, but that offense is looking terrible. Stewart might be able to make it through the night without starting a 5 alarm couch fire in Morgantown.
or is WVU offensive line really struggling with the stunts?
but the tackles in particular are really struggling
WVU needs to get it together. I don't like the thought of a team that OSU demolished beating a top 25 team on the road.
Don't read too much into this in terms of the greater scheme of things. The Marshall headcoach (Doc Holliday) was just hired away from WVU where he was the assoc head coach. So basically he helped write the WVU playbook and has an inside advantage here. For all we know he taught the defense to ready WVU's snap count and play calls.
That's a good point. (I also just noticed that Marshall is at home - duh.)
WVU put up 110 yards through the air in the first quarter alone. I think Marshall has a terrible secondary, but a D-Line that is playing inspired. I'm not sure if we can take anything from this yet, other than the possibility that both defenses are probably not that good.
Marshall's D-Line is also insanely aggressive tonight. the WVU O-Coord needs to calm his team down and start using screens and such to exploit that. I think a big part of this is that current WVU isn't that mobile and he appears rattled. WVU needs to start setting up a checkdown he can reliably hit when he feels pressure.
I feel like WVU's offense is going to crack Marshall's defense before Marshall's offense figures out how to crack WVU's D.
Agreed. I'd love Marshall to win this game, but I have a bad feeling about WVU's experience. HOWEVA (totally unnecessary, I know), I think that Doc Holliday is a good coach and will pull something out of his hat.
It was a preseason ranking. We all knew Bill Stewart was a horrible hire and the WVU program would continue to deteriorate.
Agreed. It's clear that Stewart just has an old photocopy of the RR playbook and he's calling stuff out of that, with no really innovation of his own. As the years march by and RR recruitment classes move on, WVU has dropped from a Top 10 team to a Top 25 team. When Devine heads off to the NFL, WVU likely heads for 6-6 and being the fourth best team in the Big East (with Pitt, UConn and Cincy ahead of them).
I thought Rich Rod shredded the playbook? How'd Stewart get a copy?
aren't doing too good. Marshall was able to get pressure on the QB. Marshall was terrible against OSU and looked like a compentent team against WVU.
And yet another stadium uses "Hell's Bells" (at least the gong at the beginning) before a third down. Is there a stadium PA playlist convention that these guys all go to?
I like it when someone asks a question to be funny, then they get the technical answer. I thought the NASPAA link was a joke.... nope.
Said that Notre Dame would win because, since Michigan went to a 3-3-5, we would have to have the cornerbacks cover ND receivers man to man. Did he watch any of the UConn game? Is there any reason that a 3-3-5 equals man to man?
Fans are already melting down on WVU message boards. Somebody is burning some couches tonight
Damn, all of that motivation for WVU and blam, a fumble.
wow, if Marshal gets smoked by OSU and they are looking like the big brother next to WV, how bad does Bill Stewart and Co. lose to OSU? My powers of deduction... 100-0, or something like that. Big East is AWESOME.
Cabrera with a 2 run shot to tie it at 3 with orioles bottom of 6 no outs
Old Main sort of looks like a high school. I'm not really sure I'd want that to be the symbol of my school.
Devine is so shifty. WVU looks bad though.
Maybe uconn WILL win their conference
Not after Syracuse runs it down their throats too.
Friends came over for dinner. They are from Indiana, and brought their chocolate lab, named Rudy. My dog, Sierra, a Michigan rescued malamute (wearing her gameday M collar) just shoulder blocked Rudy and dry humped him until he whined into a submission posture.
Animals can supposedly predict earthquakes and storms. Go Blue!
it is going to be a test for papa bill once he no longer had RR's players. I, like everyone else in america, questioned the bill stewart hire. WVU did it without thinking, as a reaction to RR leaving. They will regret it very soon. i think this is the year that program starts to revert
Get a shipment into the ND locker room ASAP
good god... blocked fg and 20+ yd return
I'm really enjoying the blond girl behind Stewart on the WVU sidelines. Her pure joy versus his anger is great.
WVU player takes a swing, no penalty. Marshall still got a first down
The meltdown at Smoking Musket is going to be priceless if this result holds
I'd find this hard to believe, but then I remember who WVU hired as coach.
WVU is not playing very well. Marshall is hitting WVU in the mouth. They clearly won the battle of the trenches. If Marshall can score a TD, it'd be hard for WVU to come back from it.
I'm beginning to suspect that Marshall was probably a substantially better opponent than FAMU. Also, that Bill Stewart will be fired halfway through this season.
That, and the winner of Michigan v ND is going to be ranked on Monday. 20-6...
One would think so, although I suppose it's possible they wouldn't be. If the game is a real stinker, that is.
You're really overestimating the punditry. OMG Michigan! OMG Notre Dame! Know what I mean.
Is OSU going to punish Jacory Harris tomorrow?
Ruh roh, things just took a turn for the interesting.
Grandpa makes mountaineer fans cry
Bill Stewart face! Drink!
wv missed the boat as well. That job was never hotter than when RR had just left. They had a great roster and were on the national scene. They squandered their chance to get a upper tier coach
WVU just self destructing now, holding and a false start.
WVU line beginning to resemble a startled poodle
A couple of the o-linemen look like they miss Barwis.
I don't think that play went as called. 2 fumbles seems like 1 too many, even giving them the benefit of the doubt.
This was totally my avatar until I made turbo Denard.
Is their coach seriously named Doc Holiday??
Hey guys let's play some foooooootbawwwwwwwwwwwww. What do you mean I don't blink?
Marshall doesn't have an overwhelming defense but they've got confidence on every down and its had very real results
Do you all remember when that West Virginia big wig alum from Arizona predicted doom when they hired Stewart around the time of the 07 Fiesta Bowl? He predicted this would eventually happen. He went public saying he more or less begged the school not to promote Coach Stewart.
seriously, for how much these commenatators are counting this as a marshall W with 12 minues left. its bound to happen
I was about to agree with you and then, uhh...that just happened.
EDIT: Up-voted for great call cause it looked really bad.
This Week in Schadenfreude is off to an excellent start. WV message boards handle negativity well.
WV Oline is just getting destroyed.
Field goal = game over. So that's why UConn is a solid pick to win the Big East, eh? 20 point loss to Michigan > 20 point loss to Fresno State > 20 point loss to Marshall.
I like that they just referred to the green and white team as "Little Brother."
familiar ring to it.
I hate when teams start playing soft D at the end of a game. WV just marched the field after getting owned all night.
for laughs, this guy is on fire
smoking musket's open thread is a fantastic read, although this game is far from over
That said, even money says Stew goes for two if they score here and misses, right?
You need one eventually, may as well find out if you need one or two more scores immediately instead of waiting. Otherwise you might leave yourself no time after you miss the two, or you might score quick just in case and you make it and the other guys have time for a game-winning drive.
This has a very familiar feel to it....
What a great run by Devine. That was the definition of patient. He just trotted down the line waiting for a spot to open up.
That fumble was huge
Gave WVU new life, they get a TD, it's a game
Setting up for an epic conclusion
That's some quality tackling there, lou.
but this just feels like a failure of preparation on the part of WVU. bad snaps, poor protection, bad reads... I just don't see WVU as a prepared and ready team while Marshall looks synced and extremely well prepared to play. this hasn't even been a game of it seeming like Marshall was "in their huddle"... they've just played more intensely it seems with excellent execution.
3 minutes to drive 99 yards. put up or shut up.
They punted? Christ! I thought Lloyd Carr retired.
Am I the only one who was screaming at the tv when they punted? You are up 8 with 3 minutes and change left. You are on your opponent's one yd line. Grow a pair and go for it. Hind sight is 20/20 that that punt went to the one. End the game now rather than giving the other team a chance...
Am I the only one who was screaming at the tv when they punted? You are up 8 with 3 minutes and change left. You are on your opponent's 40 yd line. Grow a pair and go for it. Hind sight is 20/20 that that punt went to the one. End the game now rather than giving the other team a chance...
Marshall isn't going to get a holding call to save their life...
...And they're being held like crazy.
which is supposed to be a safety, right?
... and on that smith run
Marshall is gonna let them score.
Prevent defense only prevents you from winning.
Fan on field
I never understood...you can mention a fan on the field but you can never show it with the cameras or else it might "encourage other drunk people to run onto the field"
Makes no sense.
Wait, they aren't going to show us the fan on the field being chased by 20 state troopers? Lame.
No, instead we're treated to a 10 second shot of Bill Stewart's constipation grimace.
Marshall's gonna be kicking themselves for punting that ball.
Yeah, but they wouldn't be in this position if they hadn't fumbled the ball in the red zone
Score there, the game's over. Marshall pulls the upset. Now there's a good game.
WVU leads series all time since 1911 9-0...damn, would have though WVU had won more games in the series than 9
WVU's line is just... they're running some steps this week
Good grief that WVU lineman is fat. They miss Barwis.
he threw it 9 yds long and 3 feet over his head. these announcers are struggling.
following in UM's footsteps with an attendance record...
The WVU offense the last two drives has just woken up
Still got to convert 2 though
they're getting some breaks and Marshall went into a prevent that shot them in the foot.
and WVU scores
this is borderline ridiculous how badly Marshall is beating them off the line and getting held on nearly every play. i don't have a dog in this fight and i'm pissed
and two flags come in for pass interference 5 seconds after WVU doesn't catch it
That ball was never getting caught, and they should be up 10 anyway after a bearhug in the endzone on the first play of the drive.
Does Bill Stewart have any expressions other than to grimace? Reminds me of Cedric Daniels in The Wire.
Even when they scored, he grimaced. Maybe his face is frozen in that position.
...and now Bill Stewart kicks a field goal.
Edit: damn, too slow.
he's kicking the extra point
I said it before but I can't believe Marshall fumbled away their chances to win this damn game
Every reason why this is still a game...point at that damn fumble
Completely changed the game, after that WVU had two drives from deep in their own territory to pull within 2
This really reminds me of last year's MSU game.
What a comeback.
showing the left tackle holding the guy with both hands
...Time to see what Marshall is made of.
unbelievable. i'm writing the NCAA a letter with stern language, CAPITAL LETTERS and lots of punctuation!!!!!!
Wish Geno Smith came up for an official few years ago, kid looks great.
Nuh uh.... he called 2 TO's in the 1st Q. He's been totally erratic when he's had pressure on, he can't really run, did you just turn the game on? I'll take all QB's on our roster over him.
Even Kennedy? You may be right, but the kid gutted it out and did what he had to do in crunch time.
but this only helps to prove what I've suspected all along... Ohio State is really good.
Jim Hermann lives!
It sucks to be Marshall. They got completely mugged on that no-call holding in the endzone (which, for all intents and purposes, would have ended the game), then proceeded to shit themselves for the next 4 minutes and allow WVU to tie it up.
They just stood there and watched that receiver run for the first down!
Man, WVU is going to be badddd when Devine leaves.
Nah, Tavon Austin is good.
Marshall's defense looks exhausted. Watch them make a huge stop now though.
These officials are just downright terrible. How is that not a personal foul?
WVU player had his helmet off taking swings at Marshall player(s) with no call
Put this in the end zone Marshall and end this sucker
Disastrous first play for Marshall.
Who didn't see that coming?
LOL HE MISSED IT
for a long, long time
It's a little misleading to say "They've been playing this since 1911" when this is the 10th meeting.
That is kinda of throwing me for a loop.
I saw that coming from one minute into the fourth quarter, but still. Poor Marshall.
They put up a great fight for having only about half the quality of players. Bill Stewart won on talent, but he couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper bag.
That was the worst coaching job in the fourth quarter I've seen in a long, long time.
AHHHHH!!! IS THAT PAM WARD?!?!?
It's somebody named Beth Mowins
Damn we have great colors - can't blame Don Nehlen and WVU for pilfering them.
Sorry for the randomness
Not only did Marshall blow it, but now I have to listen to Pam Ward. :-(
Drink until her voice is not irritating...
You're trying to kill us with alchohol poisoning?
Unbelievable. Marshall had them. Just goes to show you, you just can't let up on an opponent.
duct tape? i've seen five come off in 3 plays
Noel Devine creates some of the same fear factor Denard Robinson does. Guys like that can just destroy a defense on a crucial drive.
I honestly cant believe how much slower WVU has gotten under stewart in just 3 yrs....once Devine is gone they are in deep deep trouble...
UTEP and Houston. Feel the pagentry, feel the rivalry, feel the...uh, lack of defense.
That's what happens when you punt twice on 4th and short in your opponent's territory. Sucks for Marshall.
Lingerie Football league is on MTV2. not that i'm watching... my... friend... told me
My...er, friend is pleased that the Lingerie Football League is on now.
Houston-UTEP game on radio + Mute button on TV = cure for our Pam Ward ills
Taking the under on this game is looking to be a smart decision.
Well, that looks to be the last decent game of the evening.
UH taking UTEP to the woodshed.
There is still replays of the lingerie league going on.
Before the ball hike is the best part of every play!
OMGods it's after midnight and Lou Holtz just came on again - he's a fracking cylon
Set Condition 1!
I thought I saw him rambling on about Pryor.
Does anyone else think that Jacory Harris is overrated just because announcers like saying his name over and over and over?
I don't think he is. If I had to choose between him and Pryor, I would take Harris. He is a good QB, really poised (usually).
They did take a beating from Whiskey last year, but I expect great things from him this year.
Possibly. I dunno though. I like Jacory and think he is pretty good. Plus i would rather hear them say Jacory Harris over and over instead of Terrelle Pryor.
Whats with the other Pam Ward? Separated at birth?
EDIT: This just in - Pam Ward is white. Not sure who i was thinking of.
Didn't think Houston & UTEP covered the over. Then I got up this morning and saw that it was set at 76 not 79! Great Success!
