OT Florida's cupboard sure is empty

Well, all those Florida fans that said Urban Meyer left a clusterf*ck behind sure have a point now. Zero draft picks through the first 3 rounds. I thought the guys was a world class recruiter? Their 2007 class was #1 and their 2008 class was #3... plus his last class was #2..

wtf?

My gator fan friends tell me that attrition was super high/devastating after Meyer left. So I guess most of the guys from those top recruiting classes transferred.

Here's a good Dr. Saturday article about the UF attrition. I have no idea how much attrition has occurred since the article was penned (which was Oct. 26th), but as of then, only 60 of the 85 players who signed LOI's since 2008 were still on the team.

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/road-back-for-attrition-ravaged-gators-begins-with-long-neglected-numbers-game?urn=ncaaf,wp8736

Edit: Also, Alabama lost two more players to attrition over that same time period (27 vs. 25), but they also (over)signed 24 more LOI's (109-85) in those four years... #stopoversigning

Side question: Matt Hinton left Dr. Saturday- does anyone know where he might have landed?

I believe Jaye Howard and Chris Rainey are the only Gators projected in the draft (i.e., played their full time there, not counting transfers like Jenoris Jenkins). That's a maybe too - they were pretty low on most lists, so who knows if they even go. I might be wrong about that, of course. You are right, however, about Florida's presence in the draft, it has sort of gone...well....the way of the Urban in Florida.

I was thinking the same thing.  Of course, with Florida all you hear is how amazing that school is for producing pro talent, while UM has never been touted as an NFL factory even when it was outfitting a good number of pro teams with talented players.

All that said, I don't put as much emphasis on NFL production when considering how good a recruiter is for a school.  College coaches are paid to win games, not produce pros, and while both tend to go hand-in-hand, NCAA champions can oftentimes have relatively few pro prospects while consistently mediocre clubs can produce pros at an amazing rate (see Illinois, Clemson, etc.).  Meyer's problems at Florida stemmed from his inability to both win games with his talent as well as bring in enough top-notch kids to stay competitive when some of them left early.

We should have a first round pick next year. Kiper said that Denard will be at least the #2 WR for next year. In this current NFL, there will definitely be two WRs taken in the first round. That puts Denard as a first round pick. I know he really wants to be a QB at the next level but you gotta think teams would take him regardless because of his potential elsewhere.

This is all not mentioning Lewan, Toussaint, and Floyd(maybe?) who could all be first round picks if they have good years this fall.

I believe (and I hope), that our days of being irrelevant on Draft day like we have been in the last few years, are over.

Floyd will be lucky to be an undrafted free agent. He's no where near the caliber of player that Martin or RVB are and look how close to the 1st they went.

Toussaint will need a big year and a sub 4.5 40 to get picked day 1 or 2.

Denard will have to accept WR, run routes, show he can catch, and show well in the 40. His durability issues, fumbles and the decline of the wildcat have impacted his stock.

Taylor has a legit shot at a first round pick with a good year.

Yes...that guy.

Prime example, still ended up getting picked in Round 2.

Interesting Wikipedia fact - somebody must be a hater: at the time of the NFL combine, had 4 children by 3 different women.

I think once the coaching staff has more than 1 year to mold players, the draft prospects for UM will improve

Florida has 14 starters coming back - so it's not really a surprise that they don't have many picks yet.  Next year will have quite a few top picks.
