OT: Florida wins SB NC

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

Title says it all.  However, in light of the recent meta post, I will offer some more insight.  Florida swept Alabama (5-0 and 6-3) for their first NC.  This brings the total to 3 of team to win the NC who are based East of the Mississippi.  Us and Alabama are the other two.

Florida has a complete team with no one dominating at any one position.  They have only one player batting over .400 and only 4 batting over .300.  Their combined pitching staff has a very average ERA of about 2.00.  They overcame 4 errors in the final game as well.

It is nice to see the over-rated Pac-12 get punked.  Like I always say, sometimes the best team (on paper) does not win every game.  There are posts on blogs throughout the country dogging Florida as "lucky".  Alabama, and All-World Pitcher Jackie Traina, was widely expected to dominate the Gators.  But Florida had other ideas. Congrats to Florida and Alabama.  Now bring on Fall-Ball.  I cannot wait.

the way that championship tournament is set up, no one get's lucky in winning the thing. the best teams advance out of the regionals, best 2/3 in the supers and double elim in the WS? that shit ain't luck like the hockey tournament or the basketball tourney in some cases.

Great point.  March Madness is crazy fun, but it's also, well, crazy.  As a way of determining the best team in the country, it makes no sense.  The softball tourney I feel is kinda a best of both worlds situation for the good team & the bad ones.  Even the worst teams get to play two games, and possibly three or four in the regionals, so they get to enjoy the experience & get some publicity.  At the same time, one bad game doesn't just bust a good team out, it just makes the road ahead harder.  All in all, it's a great system that allows for a lot of drama.

Good for them, and it's good for the sport to continue the expansion into new regions.  I saw a decent chunk of the first game, and Florida was definitely playing some impressive ball.

I'm with you, also - bring on the fall ball!  This season had some great moments, but definitely left one feeling like we could have done more.  With two senior pitchers, the best hitter in the country, and some great talent coming in, this next season could be an amazing one.

It just shows what an accomplishment Michigan winning it all in 2005. The best softball on the West coast and the south. Us Midwesterners are at such a disadvantage weather wise in baseball and softball.
