OT: Florida to rename field to honor Steve Spurrier

Submitted by ThatTCGuy on

It will now apparently be known as "Steve Spurrier Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium"

This is a really cool thing, I think. Honoring their best player and best coach ever like  that, despite this breaking the "don't build statues of the living" rule.

I have had to look at that stadium/seat at least 15 times over the last 30 years and never thought, what a toilet. I feel bad and should, it looks more like a toilet seat than a toilet seat. Horse shoe my ass, that is clearly a toilet seat they call it a horse shoe just to make Ohilo people try and forget it looks so much like a toilet. Its no wonder their shitting in coolers they don't remind them of their stadium.

Thank you, Blue Cube this is another reason among many others that I come to this site daily. It completes me its like I would not be a real fan without it. God Bless Mgoblog. I owe this site much more than a simple occasional donation or purchase of the best magazine to come out of A2. I from this day forward will never call that stadium the shoe again it will be known as simply The Throne. and as always GO BLUE!

This is actually a pretty cool gesture and a fitting tribute to their winningest coach and one of the best players they ever had as well.

I would like to see some real life Hatin' Ass Spurrier at the actual dedication if there is one, but still a very cool move indeed by Florida.

Great idea; stupid name.  Full name is Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium

Why not just Spurrier Field?

Can't wait for the Tim Tebow Press Box at Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium

It was pretty much a given that Florida would hoonr Spurrier once he finally retired.  He put them on the map as a player and as a coach.  While his sense of humor was quite acerbic to rivals, he got through an entire coaching career with no controversy in his personal life or in how he ran his programs.

A great honor for someone who richly deserves it.  Best of all, he is alive to enjoy it.

I will admit to not liking Steve Suppior for a long time when he was coaching UF.  Didn't like the way he ran it up on Little Sisters of the Poor every non-conf game.  Thought he was brash and smarmy.  And laughed along with everyone else when he made some gold-standard remark.

Then at South Carolina, I began to like what he was doing.  Made them a respectable team, and did it cleanly.  While still tweaking rivals (esp UTenn) with fantastic gold-standard remarks.

Now with JMFH running things in Ann Arbor, I see the similarities.  And I see, clearly, why the two are friends.  Looking back on his career, he did it with a class I didn't recognize - much like Harbaugh is doing it with a class most people don't recognize now.

Congratulations to Steve Spurrier on an honor well-earned!  I look forward to him being at the next Signing of the Stars, too!

Oh, they are far ahead of that... I read an article the other day that a couple of the JoePa sheeple over there want to replace his statue with not 1 but 2 statues.  One will reside in PA and the other statue will travel (to away games?).

They never took JoePa's name off the library either I believe.
