I'm old fashioned in a few ways. That or knowing how to change a tire makes up a little for the fact that I'm Detroit born and bred and really don't know shit about cars.

Till I realized $50-60 a year was better than crouching in dirty slush, or rubbing my knuckles raw trying to untwist frozen bolts, or getting stuck in the middle of nowhere trying to find a tow, when they'll instead come out and do it for free.

You love talking about Misopogal.

Part of that is she loves getting mentions on the blog.

Hi Misopogal!
(Hopefully I made her day....)

I agree with the fuck winter sentiment, but Hopslam is so much better than Oberon it's silly.

Apples and oranges, man.

I guess I'm an apple guy then. In GR the bars switch from Two Hearted to Oberon during the summer and it makes me a sad sad panda. Don't get me wrong; Oberon is a good beer, but I just don't see all the commotion. Also, my beloved hopslam disappears. Other than that, however, this guy hates winter.

I'd be sad too. The day I discovered Two Hearted Ale was an incredible day. It was also a drunken day, but that is to be expected.
Here's a good thing about winter: How good does a stout, porter, or ale taste after getting in from the cold? In fact, I'm going to go have one right now.

I definitely prefer IPAs to summer ales. As for Oberon, I think that it has a big psychological draw for people. For those who drink shitty "beer", it's likely that Oberon is their only contact with the world of beer thanks to its near-mainstream presence around Michigan. Meanwhile, many people who know beer were initiated to that world by a friend's sharing Oberon with them. It's a big "when I saw the light" beer for Michiganders.

I think it definitely depends where houser from and what you grew up with. I was wholly unprepared for the
Michigan winters. I'm not from cold parts of the country and couldn't believe how often it snowed and - the killer - how long winter lasts! I have since moved to California and love the fact that if I want snow, I can go to Tahoe. If I don't - which is most of the time - I stay home by the ocean. Love Michigan from June till October. The rest of the months, I gotta take off and see the sun!!!

The winters of the mid and late 70s were much worse! Lots of snow, it was cold from November through April and in 1975-1978 we had blizzard that just closed down the interstates across the state. I remember in January of '77 when I-94 was closed west of A**2 and I-96 was closed west of Novi! Brutal!!! Hopefully Global warming will kick in!

I was going to reply with something along the lines of "On behalf of winter, fuck you." Instead, I'll try to be helpful.
First of all, sure, Oberon (or your summer ale of choice) is nice on a hot summer day. In winter, though, you have to reach for a heady stout (try New Holland's The Poet, for example) or a dark brown ale (I enjoyed New Holland's Cabin Fever this weekend). Keep your beer seasonal, and soon you will have excellent associations with those heavy beers that you can't drink on a hot day. Second, grab some thermal socks, long underwear, and a warm sweater. Wear these while drinking your beer in a comfortable chair. When it's snowing, just watch it come down and think about how warm you are. If you're mindful of this when you're inside, it makes going outside easier.

Yesterday it was 60 and over the weekend all the snow melted in my backyard. It was so windy though that part of my fence blew into neighbor's yard. Today there is 7 inches of fresh snow and I cannot fix anything until it melts.
My son is double-super pissed because they were already off for President's Day. He feels that he was robbed of a snow day. He is even hoping for a delay tomorrow.

...and I truly feel for you guys. Although believe it or not it has been very bad down here too this (and last) winter. We may not get the raw temp or depth of snow, but combine the 15 - 20 degree temps with the high humidity and it is bone chilling cold.
But it looks like winter has broken down here (70's over the weekend.... and youth baseball is underway!) so maybe it's coming your way.
I was in Ann Arbor three summers ago with my family (in July) and my son (then 11) said "Dad, we've got to move here.... the weather is so awesome!"... One of those 70 degree July days when it was 102 in Atlanta... So you've got that!

Oberon has been terrible for a few years. This past year was the worst yet. Here's hoping what happened to Bell's doesn't happen to Founders (which is currently expanding).

I've noticed this too, the batches vary. Probably based on age/exposure. The mini kegs seem to be better in general.

Just wanted to bitch. First I found out I had to work outside today, then I found out the locks are frozen on the Magazine so I can't get ammo to take boots to the gun range so they can fail. I schedule range in the spring and fall just to avoid these situation, God bless all the Military Officers who live in a world of perfect ideas but no common sense/practical knowledge.

Since we are being random, anyone else in Chicago notice how well the Rahm ads blend in with the sites color palate?
