OT-First websites you visit

OK, so I am sure most of us go to MGoBlog when our computers power-up in the a.m. Besides MGoBlog, what other wesbites do you go to when you first jump on the computer in the morning?

my husband gets tired of MGoBlog always being up on the screen. He doesn't say much but he's sort of the quiet type when he gets annoyed. But every once in awhile I catch him reading it on his own. I don't know if it's because he is actually interested or because he knows that Michigan sports is the only thing I really like talking about.

I have a couple dozen websites on my Google Reader (best timesaver on the internet so far). I just scan through to see what I want to check out by topic. Other than that I have a separate tab open for Facebook and of course MGoBlog at all times. My Reader contains most of the sites on the MGoBlog links.

2nd the google reader. I run through my Michigan Blogosphere, my BigTen blogosphere (football and baseball), my College Baseball Blogopshere, Other Sports consortium (pro sports, local sports), National News (NTTimes, Slate, Houston Chronicle, Tyler Telegraph), Local News (Tyler, Houston, my hometown), Science magazines (Popular Science, New Scientist, The Economist, The New Yorker, Blogs about Beer, Blogs about Media, Blogs about umpiring, Google Alerts (my name, several Michigan baseball topics, one of my student groups from when I was at UM). There's a couple other topics that don't show up as often, but yeah, that's my first stop in the morning. Then it's my two scheduling sites for umpiring to see if new games have come open, weather, and back to mgoblog (as I read the main page from google reader) for the diaries/board. As for facebook, I deactivated my account over a year ago. Best decision ever. I'm much more productive as a person, even if most of the time is now spent on google reader. I feel like the information and reading I do on reader is a billion times more interesting or important than the day to day crap that my acquaintances are doing or playing Farmville.

I use Google Reader as well. I've got a folder for comics which contains Dilbert, XKCD, The Oatmeal, and Bizarro; Facebook which keeps updates that I actually care about so I don't have to go to the site and see everyone's farmville updates; TV with updates from Hulu about which of my shows have new updates. I also have feeds for Dailytech, Lifehacker, MGoBlog and MGoBoard, O'Reilly Radar, Smart Football, Steve Sharik's Diaries, and TomVH via Twitter. I also use some extensions in Chrome which show me if I have any messages in Gmail, notifications in Facebook, upcoming events in GCal, or any new articles in my rss feeds from above. foreach (Extension notifier in Chrome.Extensions) { if (notifier.Count > 0) { notifier.CheckWebsite(); } }

google homepage loads up the weather, email, facebook, espn headlines, digg headlines, nytimes headlines all in one shot. Then I probably head over to facebook, mgoblog, espn, digg, huffingtonpost, maybe google news, youtube. Then once the important stuff is out of the way and I'm just trying to kill time I'll go to the daily what, gawker.tv, download some tv shows from pirate bay, and maybe hit up some icanhascheezburger or hawtness or other random sites. (yes, I have a lot of down time at work)

Google Reader is an RSS reader that will pick up links from different websites you select and place them on your Google homepage. It eliminates the insane amount of time spent typing, "w-w-w.m-g-o-b-l-o-g.c-o-m" every day. If the internet is the lazy man's place to find news, RSS readers are the lazy, lazy man's place to find news. I use it all the time for secondary sites (BHGP, etc) that I don't check unless I'm interested in a specific article.

After a certain number of websites, it's not due to laziness. Trying to recall 400-500 different websites that I keep current with straight is no easy task. It's an efficiency issue and a reminder of what all I read. When a place takes a few days off, it used to fall out of my routine and be forgotten for weeks or more. This just allows me to keep tabs on everything.

Definitely a good explanation but I don't think that laziness is the right way to describe the psychology behind people who use feed readers. To me it's about whether you want news from the internet to be pushed to you or if you want to pull it down yourself. From my perspective: I started using feed readers ages ago (Remember Sage?) when it seemed like push psychology was going to take over the internet and RSS was going to explode. As it turns out many people would still rather track news down themselves - nothing wrong with that at all.

Email. MGoBlog. Centsports.com. National Weather Service (I'm a meteorologist). Of note though, if any of you like sports betting, but don't like risking the money, you should check out centsports. It's awesome. Advertisement sponsored $0.10 gets you started and you build it up from there. You can cash out real money (I have already for those doubters). I am up to $230 and looking to cash out another $150 this month. Think about it.

If anybody has heard of it, but I usually go to woot.com once a day. I do this, yet I have never bought anything off the site. I guess maybe I will someday. Other than that maybe ESPN and comcast. I aso check my madden franchise site for the PS3.

OK, you got me. Mgoblog = The best best for UM football news and lot's of fun OT's. mlive - not so much since they changed formats. yahoo mail facebook - have to clean the fish tank foodnetwork - I do a lot of cooking, and get help from Emeril. We're now in the off season, and the wife likes it. I've been told I play more with strangers on the blog than with her. She dreams she was a computer from Sep - Jan.
