OT: First Class of Jalen Rose Leadership Academy Graduates

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

Great story in the Detroit News. The Jalen Rose Leadership Academy's first graduating class held its commencement today. This is the charter school that Jalen founded in the city back in 2011. The freshmen from that first class graduated today. According to the story, 100 percent of the grads are going to college, trade school or into the military.

He also got Isiah Thomas and Big Sean to show up for the ceremony.

So proud of Jalen and what he's done with this school. This is what a hero looks like. He's not changing the world, but he's changing the world of those kids.

impressive statistics...100% of students moving on to a next step and 2.1 million dollars raised on their behalf. I hope for big things for this and future classes from this promising school.

This is really something great.  Amazing to think that I once watched the Fab 5 as kids while I was a kid and one of those kids (Jalen) grew to be such an impactful man.  I'm really happy to hear about the success of his school and these are those types of stories that just make you feel good!

Reading these comments are hilarious. You guys need to dig a tad bit deeper on this school. J Rose his helping his pocket book more than anything else.

Ok, I'll play. Granted that charter schools get state aid that could have gone to non-charter schools and that charter schools (like low income housing and renewable energy) are tax plays for certain investors, do you have any more specific concerns?

If we assume that you are correct, if they work better and are truly better than the status quo (DPS), then so what? I will acknowledge that some are crap, but since they are based on a free market approach, if there reputation isn't good, then they won't last long.

I'm not arguing against Jalen or the school--I'm asking cobra14 if he has more specific concerns than some of the generalized concerns about charters. In other words, what did he/she meant when he/she said: "J Rose his helping his pocket book more than anything else."

Edit: It appears that the original cobra14 post questioning Jalen's motives that this discussion is in response to has been deleted, and instead on the full site it looks like my original post is a buffoonish response to a congratulatory note. Apologies for the confusion.

"Your job, your responsibility as leaders, is to make sure you leave the door open," he said. "Jalen Rose thank you for opening that door." - Isiah Thomas, from his speech

Hopefully, this door remains open for many, many students throughout the years and hopefully others decide to give back to the city in the way that Jalen Rose has.
