OT: Final Day of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying Open Thread

Submitted by VCavman24 on

This may be OT but it is a huge event that many people on the board care about.

Today is the final day of CONCACAF qualifying.  The U.S. and Costa Rica have both secured spots, while Honduras is guaranted at least a play-in game against New Zealand.  Mexico needs a win and a Honduras loss to guarantee qualification.  If Panama beats the US and Mexico loses to Costa Rica, then Mexico is completely out.  If Mexico gets at least one point or if Panama doesn't win, then Mexico gets the play-in spot.  All games start at 9:30.

Costa Rica vs Mexico

Panama vs USA

Jamaica vs Honduras

The U.S. game is on BeIN Network.

I love how they line up these games at the same time so teams can't lose on purpose to spite other teams. Same thing with the last games of the first round in the world cup. I really like it. That's all...

...this is why they do:

Der Nichtangriffspakt

The most astonishingly dull game of soccer I've ever seen. Followed a week later by the most exciting game I've ever seen, the Germany/France semi that had four extra-time goals.

It's probably worth pointing out that there isn't any need for explicit collusion in matches like this--one side or the other is trying to score at first, but once the scoreline gets to a score that works for both teams a sort of stable equilibrium sets in and there's no reason for either side to move forward. It still happens sometimes in UEFA competitions because of their tiebreaking rules (Sweden and Denmark's score in Euro '04 was magically attracted to the one result, 2-2, that would put both teams through) but I don't think it's happened again in FIFA since '82.

I hate the Mexican soccer team. Let's just say I wouldn't be too upset if we lost this game since it is meaningless to us.

Obviously, Jurgen isn't that concerned about winning either given the lineup tonight.

Panama, what are you thinking going forward with so many men in extra time when you have the lead? You absolutely must have 10 men back in that situation.

As much as i would have liked to see Mexico knocked out, Panama deserved that for playing so foolishly.

I only followed the games based on Twitter reactions.  It sounded completely crazy.  Almost wish I went to a soccer bar just to watch the range of emotions in the 2nd half of those games.

Final:

USA 3   -   Panama 2

Mexico 1   -   Costa Rica 2

Honduras 2    -   Jamaica 2

Final Standings:

USA

Costa Rica

Honduras

Mexico

Panama

Jamaica

USA, Costa Rica, and Honduras are going to Brazil

Mexico is going to play New Zealand for a chance at Brazil

Panama and Jamaica are going home

Panama was leading the US 2-1 with 5 minutes left and let the US score two goals in two minutes at 90' and 92'.  Panama would be playing New Zealand and Mexico would be out if the 2-1 score stood.  De nada Mexico.

De nada, El Tri.

Watching the Mexico game on Telemundo was spectacular.  I don't speak or understand Spanish entirely but can pick up bits and pieces, and it was pretty damn obvious when the US scored.  They were yelling "thank you United States" and "God bless America" and basically ripping the Mexican team a new one.
