I'm a sucker for the funny

I'm a sucker for the funny ones, so it's between the Vader one and the doritos raising the guy from the dead one.

But yeah, Em and Chrysler killed it. Woo Detroit!

I thought this was ok.  I was expecting much more from a Bud Light commercial, they have had really funny ones in the past.

And I'm part of a GM family...

Also, the VW Darth Vader commercial was hilarious. Laughed the hardest at that one for sure.

I find myself saying this

I find myself saying this almost every year.  Seems like they get progressively less interesting.

I liked Chrysler's Em one, Motorola Xoom, and the Doritos bringing grandpa back from the dead.  Can't remember many others right now.

Chevy must have spent a fucking fortune tonight though, they were everywhere.

Yeah, much like the game USED to be

The hype usually overrides the actual product. But I thought this year was a modest step up. There were at least 2 I thought were great, and a number of other pretty good one's, with the usual array of clunkers.

Read something on this in years past

It's not that superbowl commercials are getting worse per se, it's that advertising in general is getting a lot better. Companies used to spend SO much on just their superbowl ad, and not much on anything else, now EVERY commercial on TV is better than every commercial 10 years ago, so the superbowl ads don't seem as sweet since the bar has been raised all around.

I agree, most were "meh." I liked the VW, Chrysler, and Audi ones best myself.

"Hit them with the Kenny G!"

One of my issues is that

One of my issues is that the ads are mostly dominated by 3 companies, it's just the same 3 companies (Doritos, Bud Light, Pepsi Max), and I think EDSBS pointed it out on twitter during the game.

The Bud light ones aren't that funny, I didn't see the Doritos one that riled up so much controversy, and the Pepsi Max ones were alright. But overall, the commercials were slightly amusing, nothing real special or outstanding.

That one and the Em/Chrysler

That one and the Em/Chrysler one were the best.

After that, the Bud Light truck, VW/Vader, and the Snickers one that clobbered Roseanne with a log.

Vader was awesome but

Vader was awesome but 'Imported From Detroit' is the absolute best tagline I've seen.  Totally inpiring commercial.  Anyone who lives in Detroit or works in the auto industry has got to be pumped up after seeing that ad.  Hell I'm in neither of those categories and I was pumped.  I know everyone likes to say that whatever they just saw was the best but that truly might be the best commercial I've seen.

"We don't care what you think

"We don't care what you think of us" is precisely the opposite of the attitude espoused by the commercial.  "You should think better of us, because we made this frickin' sweet car" is what they're trying to tell you.

And they did it in a way that isn't likely to turn off anyone who wasn't already sworn to buy Toyotas for life, and would definitely appeal to 99.9% of people in one particular city.

Move out of Detroit...

...and you'll see all the "wonderful" things the national media has to say about Detroit and the state of Michigan.

People outside the area have really forgotten that the city of Detroit and state of Michigan have done FAR more for America than America has done for them. You think the Allies win WW2 without the "Arsenal of Democracy"? Fat chance.

Nothing wrong with a little reminder now and then.

I don't care if it took a commercial to express it -- this entire state needs some god damn pride.  Have some pride in your home.  This is Michigan, for God's sake.

Hit the with the Kenny G!

Of course the Chrysler commercial, but the "Prison for Rich people" in the Audi commercial, was f-ing hilarious.

Chrysler killed it

But for LAUGHS, I was really struck by the ending of the Pepsi Max commercial, where the wife threw the can at the husband and instead it struck the other woman in the head.

Also loved the takeoff on the classic coke commercial with House throwing his cane at a kid.

Loved the Chrysler

Loved the Chrysler commercial, loved the Doritos ones, and loved the VW/Vader one.  But I think my fave was the Best Buy commercial.

Sharon: What's a 6G?

Ozzy: What's a Bieber?

Audio Dude (Bieber in disguise): I don't know, but it kinda looks like a girl.

CLASSIC.

If it ended with Ozzy biting Beiber's head off.

How could you not expect

How could you not expect that? It's the classic Mean Joe commercial and all he was holding was the cane. Nothing else to throw at him.

No new ground here

Loved the Vader kid (though as i said in the Super Bowl thread, watch it online, it's longer and funnier, as he gets more frustrated, and the payoff at the end is better http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R55e-uHQna0&sns=em )

Detroit/Chrysler commercial unexpectedly excellent. Though it would be funny to combine it with the Brisk commercial and have Claymation Em.

Most of the other good one's are listed here too. I liked the beer product placement one too. Memorable, if not necessarily "good" was Kim Kardashian...just because; and the Captain America commercial, because even though it seems horribly miscast, it's really the first video we've seen of it. Thor looks better, but we've seen trailers of that.

As everyone else said, the Chrysler ad was awesome.  Also liked the House one and the Vader clips.  There was also some random Bud Light/Miller Light one that made me laugh, but I don't remember much else from the game.

Part of why Chrysler ad was so good?

The Houston Chronicle of all places has put it best so far:

"Chrysler: Imported from Detroit" This ad was serious and stirring and patriotic without a bunch of trite flag-waving, and it did the near-impossible, but what an ad is supposed to do: it made me feel like it's my patriotic duty to buy a Chrysler.

Not even kidding. I feel like I HAVE to buy a Chrysler now.

hmmmm...

Em and Detroit by a landslide. Few commercials move the meter and make people see things in a different light; despite plant closures, bad politics and a generalizably difficult time that ad speaks to the pride I exhibited by the people I meet from Detroit area and Michigan more generally.

Gotta go with "Imported from Detroit"

But another one not mentioned that I really liked was the chimps pulling up next to the guy in the car and blocking him in.  Really can't go wrong with commercials with chimps.

It doesn't make a lot of sense

So it's not a good commercial, but I don't see it as inappropriate. Now, if they had shown Elizabeth Hurley's hardwood floors...

(hmm, nevermind, I probably still wouldn't have complained, so I'm not a good judge...)

Even though I am a GM

Even though I am a GM employee, I had to do some chest thumping after the Chrysler commercial. I liked the Club Fed (rich people/mobster prison), driving chimps, and Darth Vader commercials too. The Doritos ones plain sucked, and is it just me or should they put that fucking E*Trade baby out to pasture. Even the Budweiser frogs think that shits played out.

Imported from Detroit

I was born and raised in the suburbs but my great grandpa worked in various factories in Detroit, one grandpa worked at Ford for 35+ years, other grandpa worked at GM for 9 before opening his own restaurant downtown, dad grew up in Detroit and followed in his father's footstep and opened a couple places of his own, multiple uncles worked for the Big 3, list goes on and on.  I only ever went to Detroit for sporting events/concerts but that commercial made me feel proud that my family helped make that city great.

Listening to the voice over and Lose Yourself makes me want to go fight other cities.  Yes, whole other cities.

You guys did see the brief

You guys did see the brief Barry Sanders appearance in the Imported from Detroit commercial right? It was for like less than a second, which to me was subtle and went with the awesomeness of the commercial. Definitely my favorite commercial of the night.

Pepsi/Doritos (Pepsi owns Frito Lay) had a few goods ones as did Audi. I was overall disappointed with the commercials overall this year, Budweiser really did not do nearly as well as they normally do, though they did have some decent ones. They set the standard high every year, and I don't think they reached that standard this year.

Imported From Detroit Ad FTW

The Chrysler/Detroit ad is getting rave reviews from all over.  Many, outside of Michigan, are claiming it to be the nights best and most impactful ad:

Slate Magazine

http://www.slate.com/id/2284035/pagenum/all/#p2

BrandBowl2011:

http://www.americanbankingnews.com/2011/02/06/chrysler-is-the-winner-in-brandbowl2011/

Reuters:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/02/07/industry-us-superbowl-advertising-idUSTRE7160PN20110207

USA Today's Ad Poll had the Chrysler/Detroit ad as a dismal 44nd.  That was taken from a "second-by-second"  reactions of a panel of volunteers.  But really, can we trust the judgement of anyone who wants to participate in a panel rather than watch the game?  I think not.

Not being able to escape "Old Luxery."  Sound familiar?

This one also got a chuckle out of me:

Laughed at Vader & Pepsi Max "I wanna sleep with her" ads. Moto Tablet ad was funny, did a great job of poking at Apple. But the Chrysler Ad hit a nerve unlike any other.

Followed closely by the attack Pug, because my parents have three Pugs and they look funny when they run.

And I agree with board sentiment regarding Imported from Detroit. Very powerful. Made me proud to say I was born in the D.
