OT: Favorite Dorm Memory

Submitted by Trump on

The other day, my buddy and I were reminiscing on some of the good times we had in the dorms. I think it would be interesting to hear some stories from some of the mgoblog crazies...

Best dorm memory during your time at the university, go!

See my sig.

It was early in the fall of 2012, and after a night of smoking a friend and I decided to head from South Quad to the Union for some 2am Wendy's. When we got there, it was just us and two other students in the entire dining hall. Being the sports-nut that I am, I quickly identified them as none other than Trey Burke and Caris Levert, both also trying to get their late-night Wendy's on. We got in line right as they were finishing up their order. After paying, Trey asked the worker there if he could have some extra ketchup packets, but for some reason the worker refused. My friend and I quickly stepped in, offering to share some of our ketchup packets with him. In return however, we said that they had to promise to make the Final Four. They smiled and agreed.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Bursley had a cop that was so hot our floor got her to hold two handles of liquor in uniform and we made t-shirts out of it.  Top floor of Douglas.  She was not a very good security officer.

Not at UM, but my freshman year some idiot/genius hit a sprinkler perfectly with a blow dart. I don't know where he got the blow gun or how on earth he got to be so incredibly accurate, but we had a giant slip n slide on our hands until the cops showed up.

I'm a freshman living in South Quad's Taylor house (4th floor) the fall of 1979.  The guys in Huber house (7th & 8th floors) did a booze thing where you paid $5 and could drink all you wanted. Yes, I was only 18 at the time.  They had beer in some rooms, mixed drinks in others and Everclear (190 proof kind) mixed with fruit juice in one.  The Everclear punch tasted good and I did my drinking there.

Woke up the next morning with the RA at the side of my bed with a bucket, mop and bottle of Mr. Clean.  Apparently I had repeatedly puked in the 4th floor restroom, once in the sink, once in the trash can, once in a urinal and once in one of the shower stalls.

As the RA told me to get cleaning I noticed my pillow and face were covered in puke as well.

I probably didn't drink for 2-3 days after that.

Second semester the guy who lived next to me got a girlfriend that was a screamer.  I was minding my own business watching TV in my room when they went at it again at 2pm for the 4th day in a row.  By then, I'd made a plan.  I opened my window and propped my door open, turned on Johnny Cash's version of Hurt, and turned it up to 11.

Never heard her again.

I was in Cambridge which is a grad dorm.  It's in the Michigan Union, attached to West Quad.  It used to be part of the Michigan Union hotel.

What was nice about it besides its killer central location was that since it was a former hotel you got your own room with its own bathroom.  Also since it was a a former hotel, some of the rooms had doors on the inside that could be opened to make a larger double room.

There was a problem with the original room I had, so I was moved to what was the women's floor at the time.  I was the only guy on an all-female floor.

If the girl in the room next to mine opened her inside door and I opened mine, we could go back and forth with no walk of shame.  Which we did.

What I learned from all of this is: It's not who's better, it's who's there.  Many of these girls would not have even said Hi to me at a bar.  But because I was around all the time at the dorm, I got to play out of my league.

I miss college.

West Quad Michigan House 1969 and 1970
Lots of good times. Trading in the Arb with cherry brandy hip flasks(since the girls would drink flavored brandy). Snow ball fights with South Quad. Hall hockey with 2 on 2 in the hallways and 5 on 5 in front of cafeteria. Panty raid on Stockwell in 1969. The girls threw their panties out the windows!Might have been the last one, since the fourth floor of our house was girls for fall of 1970. Guys from our house latched on to an upright post from the torn down goal posts at the famous 1969 24-12 victory over OSU. They carried it out of the stadium and we hid it at Michigan House. Later that week it was cut up into various size sections for keepsakes. People in dorms without mini-fridges would keep beer on their window sill to get cold. Some of the guys would use snowballs to knock the beer down from the window sills. Free beer! I only observed this.

Bursley 2nd Hamilton: Home of the Human Pile: 1988-1990

1. The human piles... some deserving gentleman would get human piled on random occasions.

2. The Bat: A bat came flying in and for some reason one of the hall mates had a cricket bat and went to town.. Good swing!

3. The wired glass: One gentleman in a drunken stupor decided to punch through the security glass on the door at the end of the hall. Awesome results! He made it through, pulling back he left a bunch of skin behind.

4. The night the 2nd year when the hall above decided to turn on the water hose.

5. Winning the 89 Basketball Championship and watching on Frank's TV in his room on the stolen cable!

6. Moon sleeping the night away in the restroom. Waking up Sunday morning to see him sleeping there, not knowing what had went on the night before. The green colored liquid he vomited did eventually come out of the carpet! Constantly putting Moon slept here signs.

7. Hall Hockey, with Raja playing goal without a cup. (Okay Engineers aren't always the sharpest guys, but he had an awesome Green 64 or 67 Mustang!)

I loved the dorms!

PS: My nickname was T-bird.. long story, but since I named names I figured I should include mine.

It was a fun, freedom-filled era when you could be 18, go buy kegs at Blue Front, then your RA and RD would help you carry them upstairs to the hall or other public area where the party would commence. I also remember:

  • Stereo wars with South Quad in the middle of the night and everyone screaming back and forth "South Quad - You Suck!" "West Quad - You Suck!".  It went on forever.
  • Waking up at 3am to Pink Floyd's Time being blared from Rumsey House and thinking it was the fire alarm.
  • Not waking up at 3 am to the fire alarm because it was always going off anyway (or was just Time again!)
  • Getting caught in the shower during a real fire alarm and having to evacuate in mid-winter to stand in Thompson Street wearing just boots, a friend's hastily thrown-on parka, and dripping hair.
  • Quaddie burgers - the little hockey puck burgers you had to drizzle cheese sauce on to make it a cheeseburger.
  • $4 cases of Wiedemann longnecks
  • Short walks to Dooley's Dime Night (Mondays) armed with a variety of markers so we could draw the stamp on our hands in the bathroom.
  • Drunken forays to the Union via what we were certain were secret passageways.
  • The Madison Street party that took place between South and West Quads
  • Living next to the "Cat Frat"
  • Feeling a little like a country hick because my parents wouldn't pay to outfit me in Jordache jeans or all the green and pink preppie whale and alligator covered attire everyone else wore. (Decades later - Thank you mom and dad!)
