OT: Favorite Dorm Memory

Submitted by Trump on

The other day, my buddy and I were reminiscing on some of the good times we had in the dorms. I think it would be interesting to hear some stories from some of the mgoblog crazies...

Best dorm memory during your time at the university, go!

89 Semi Final game against Illinois.  Some Jackwad in West Quad (go Chicago House) pulling a fire alarm.   We hid behind my neighbors bar and watched the game on a small tv while the RA's pounded on the doors.

I was one of the learning community kids, had I think one meeting every 3 months for a guaranteed spot in couzens. And every meeting was like watching a movie or something, pretty much a joke. Well worth it to guarantee I didn't get placed on north campus. Best memories from the dorm? The girls man, the girls

Enjoy it! I loved being in Couzens, lots of fun and great proximity to everything else. The best thing I got from my "Michigan Scholars Program" was the central campus housing, free shirt and ability to write it on my resume haha. And you are surrounded by tons of other dorms/cafeterias/right across from the CCRB. Man I miss college!

We had a HS pitcher and a hockey player on the floor and they dented those volkswagens. After awhie Dominos started hiring atheletes to ride with the delivery guy and they would chase us. We countered by having a couple of HS track guys out for them to chase, then all of us would charge out of the bushes and snowball the driver in his car. We also found a vantage point that we could throw snowballs in a high arc that would land on the cars when we were hidden again. Then there was a water fight with 3rd floor ( we were on 4th ) . About 3 am we got a hose from the sink and ran it through their lounge window and soaked it for an hour. They had no idea what hit them and had to pay for the carpet. We thought we were not having a good time and were studying too hard...

challenged Ed Muransky to a pillow fight one Sunday Night. He comes out with this huge bag of laundry and proceeds to lay us all to waste. We then got up with Ed and went over to West Quad and challanged them, but they responded by throwing a bottle at us. On the way back up in South Quad we all piled into an elevator, and proceeded to get stuck between floors for hours (Otis Elevator wasn't rushing out to save us late Sunday night) before they passed a screwdriver thru the crack in the doors and someone managed to free us. Good times.

I was with my buddies at Dooley's going traying (we would order a tray of drinks at a time, lol) and one guy at the next table is flirting with some girl on the top balcony level. Her boyfriend gets wind of this and starts jawing at this guy below. Next thing he goes all WWF jumping off the balcony on to our table and these two guys go at it. All hell breaks loose like a Bruce Lee movie, and I'm stupidly worried about my multiple gin and tonics.

All of sudden both main combatants are levitating due to the fact that bouncer Ed has picked their asses up of the ground. Both guys go from tough guys to scared shitless as he carries them out the door like two loaves of bread. I think he just tossed them outside like garbage, and then my roommate goes to flirt and eventually scores with the girl in the top level.

Dooley's and Second Chance were the source of so many memories.

the 3rd stall in the bathroom on 6th douglass my freshman year (82-83) had some of the witiest quips.  i will never forget one in particular:

one guy wrote the common saying "Jesus saves!"

right underneath another guy replied "...and Gretzky scores on the rebound."

My roommate and I hauled a keg up the stairs to 4th doug into our room.  Our RA caught us and just said: "shhh"

a couple hours later, you can imagine things were not "shhh" or in order - the security folks came by and just asked: "you guys good" and went on their way...  epic party!

I'll never forget my first football Saturday as a Freshman in '77. I didn't grow up in Michigan, and had never been to a college game. I was the first person from my family to go to Michigan. Back then, all games were a noon start time. Promptly at 9am, blasting from the room next door from one of those massive stereo systems some guys had, came the full Michigan fight song, fanfare and all. It was, as they say, cranked to "eleven." This was right near the end of the Ten Year War and the classic games with Woody and Bo. As a clueless freshman, I didn't realize how good we had it. Bo Schembechler and a 10-2 season were a given. I woke up the same way every game day, and it never got old. Walking in the throngs down Hoover on a sunny Fall day, enjoying cider, seeing the blue haze of pot smoke floating languidly over the student section, seeing hundreds of coeds passed up the stands every time there was a score. It all melts together in my memory, and is a good thing.

Nothing really dangerous, but it was scary as heck, and a lot of other strange or drunk people roaming around.

Also breaking into the union from WQ and stealing bowling balls and pins and then rolling them down various WQ halls.

I think I'm now understanding why my grades weren't as good as they should have been.

Markley - 5th Van Tyne '10-'11
Stockwell - 3rd floor 5 side '11-'12

Blowing $300 a semester in dining dollars on mozerella sticks, chicken wraps, and smoothies at the Hideaway in Markley was great. Then of course, there's the typical Markley stuff like hallway mini-golf tournaments, smuggling in booze, and leaving for class in the morning to find matresses and puke in the hallway.

Stockwell was much tamer, only fun thing that happened there was my friend passing out in the elevator only wearing his underwear, eventually waking up, then knocking on my door in the middle of the night to ask if he could sleep on our futon.

Spent some time in West Quad and Couzens as a counselor for a summer program for high school students, but I'll leave out those stories as some of the kids involved might be on the blog now.

I lived in East Quad, and somehow this is the craziest story I can come up with. My roommate and I made the Daily Crime Notes, and we didn't even leave our room. Or do anything illegal.

He burned a bag of popcorn in the microwave. If you set off your room's fire alarm, you were fine. But if you set off the one in the hallway, the entire building went off, and you'd have big problems. So the fire alarm starts going off, and we go into crisis mode. Fanning around the door, opening the window (it was winter, IIRC, so this was a shitty turn of events), the whole deal.

What we didn't know is that even if you don't turn on the one in the hallway, DPS still comes to your door. They somehow find out when an alarm goes off. So there's a knock at the door, DPS comes, they fill out a report. This is all going down at about 10PM.

4AM. I swear to god, DPS calls our room phone, and wants to talk to my roommate in order to finish filling out the report so they could notify his parents. He wasn't 18 yet, IIRC, and they had to be notified that he freaking set off the fire alarm.

The next morning, we were in Crime Notes. I just about choked on my food reading the Daily at lunch when I realized it was us. Slow crime news day, I guess. I wish I had kept the clipping.

but I worked there as the guy who sat by the door and made sure that people didn't rip off food ( or at least guys didn't ) . The BB players lived there. One day as Phil Hubbard got up to go out his friends had put a string of firecrackers in his size 20 shoes and lit them. He was genuinely surprised, then walked out the door, crackers still exploding. People looked for a few seconds then went on eating. After all, this happened every day, right ? ( firecrackers were illegal then )

A few friends and I were walking down the stairs to the South Quad basement and who do we see but Denard standing in the hallway, talking with a girl who I presume was his crush/girlfriend. This was early fall 2010 when he had just taken campus by storm. He was sort of facing away from us so we weren't sure at first and instinctively paused to stare for a few seconds. His ladyfriend was facing us though and sort of glanced at us for a sec with a come on guys look on her face. At that point Denard turns around and in spite of the situation he's still got that trademark smile on his face. So one of my friends just blurts out "Hey...!" and  Denard responds, still smiling, with a "Heyy..." and then we all just sheepishly scurry through the door into the basement common area to give them their privacy...

Might not call it my favorite memory but it's one that has stuck with me. Maybe because it was just so weird to see him in a non-football capacity, with no football buddies around him, doing things a regular student living in the dorms would do... And of course also because it proved that Denard is almost literally incapable of not smiling.

Alice Lloyd, 3rd Angell, Freshman year, Fall of 1970.

Playing guts frisbee in the corridor. We were constantly breaking the glass covers on the surface mounted ceiling lights in the corridor. The most effective shots were ricochets off the door jambs and the skipping shots that climbed the corridor walls. Housekeeping was never happy.

We created our own subculture and renamed our corridor 3rd Bhlowte after Robin Lowe, a sophomore who had the dubious distinction of having the worst grade point on the corridor.

One day we taught Mr. Bhlowte a lesson he would never forget. He claimed he had a cast iron stomach and could drink anything without getting sick! We met him at Campus Towers where he had been drinking whisky. We took him to Village Corners and bought him a bottle of Black Jack apple wine and encouraged him to chug it and then have him run back to the dorm with us. We proceeded to watch the movie "Night of the Living Dead" in the blue carpet lounge only to see him crawling on all fours to the closest bathroom for relief. He never made it back to his room but instead to another room on the second floor where he vomited and rolled on it all night long. The next day he was wearing sunglasses to help relieve some of the aspects of his brutal hangover.

We addressed everybody as Mr. .... and created certain expressions which we used constantly.......

Very well stated

Very well done

I predict perverbial burn

You love to burn

Sidebet

We must go to game

Created a kazoo band and performed between periods of the hockey games. This was pre Red days when our team was the worst in the league and our goalie would face 40-50 shots a game.

Was a member of our dorm intramural handball team that beat the jocks at South Quad!

This was 1971-73 when Markley more closely resembled a concrete-block minimum-security prison than the comparatively palatial residence hall it is now. There are no favorite memories.

Those occurred in my girlfriend's room in MoJo.

THE FRAT PLEDGES ALWAYS PULLING THE FIRE ALARM... 4TH FLOOR NEIGHBOR DECIDED TO HAVE FUN... HE HAD THE BEST SPEAKER SYSTEM IN THE DORMS... OPENED WINDOWS FACED SPEAKERS OUTWARDS AND STARTED BLASTING A 70'S PORN THROUGH THEM AS WE WERE ALL OUTSIDE... I THINK I COULD HEAR THE SIDEBURNS...

My favorite was first good snow South and West fire alarms would go off and there would be a snowball fight between the dorms in the middle of the night. The cops would block off the street for it.

Carried it up 3 flights of stairs and had a huge beer pong tournament.  Luckily our RA was cool with it.

We also found a shopping cart outside of our dorm and did what any normal drunk 19 year olds would do.  We carried up to our floor and had timed bobsled races down the hall.

Lived in Fletcher Hall down off Hoover st 1976-78. We had a small parking lot in back, room for maybe 12-15 cars. Everybody would move their cars out Friday night before football games and then on Saturday we sold out the lot for football parking. Made enough to go over to campus corners to buy Saturday night keg.

I attended a small Private college, but some of my favorite dorm memories are:  Going up to a group of prospective students on a tour of the campus and Inviting them to Naked Bible Study at 7:00.

Another one that really pissed off our RA and fellow dorm dwellers, was we turned the stereo up as loud as it would go and played the Spice Girls song on repeat and left for the weekend.

Not as good as some of the other stuff on here, but they sure were some good memories.

Friend jumping out of the 5th floor window of west quad onto a small ledge and creeping out through someone's room (they left their window open) and running to Betsy Barbour to avoid DPS.
