OT: Favorite Dorm Memory

Submitted by Trump on

The other day, my buddy and I were reminiscing on some of the good times we had in the dorms. I think it would be interesting to hear some stories from some of the mgoblog crazies...

Best dorm memory during your time at the university, go!

You're telling me. I wander out as a freshman, mildly confused about the fire alarm. I had no idea what I was stepping into.

Huge contingents of people on both sides of the street, screaming, puffing out their chests and yelling at each other. I found my way to the front lines just as both sides charged.

Lots of ice and snow on the ground, so I slipped and went skidding across the turf just as a stampede of angry kids thundered into each other all around me. I legitimately thought I was about to get trampled to death.

It's the winter of '97-98, and the annual West Quad-South Quad snowball fight has begun.  Students on both sides had yet to charge, and people were picking up trash can lids to use as shields.  For a moment both sides stop as a mob of students turns the corner on State Street and proceeds down Williams into the ruckus.

The mob?  The residents of East Quad.

Their field general leading the charge?  Dhani Jones.

The year I lived in the West most people knew what was happening when the alarm got pulled.  After about 5 minutes of flinging snow I took an ice chunk square to the face.  Put an end to my experience as I'm pretty sure I had a concussion with blood coming out my nose and mouth.  If any of you let fly that fateful snowball, well struck good sir.

Only UM dorm memory here was baseball camp in the summer of '87. I did get a bunch of Tigers autographs on a mitt I still have. That was a good time.

I know...boring as hell for those of you old enough to actually party!

Between sneaking in kegs, liquor, getting laid, Bursley ice cream and the RA letting us drink/smoke pot whenever I couldn't tell ya.

Rotvig Bursley was the shit.

Edit:

Actually I will always remember the crazy campus wide blackout that happened for like 5 hours one night. I swear half of Bursley started hotboxing their rooms immediately. If you walked into Hamilton, you would get insta-high.

Had an a-hole on our floor that liked to do his laundry at 2AM.  Problem was, the laundry room was down a floor from our hall and he would turn up his stereo loud enough so that he could hear it THROUGH THE FLOOR of his room down in the laundry room while he was doing his laundry.

Of course, it pissed the whole floor off when he did this as we were trying to sleep.  One night, we finally had enough of it, and after congregating in the hallway and bitching for a while, one of the smarter members of our hall (this was Bursley, so we had engineers) bent open the locked circuit breaker box with a pair of pliers and just started turning off breakers until we took out his room.

That was pretty cool.

Shared this before, but it bears repeating.

I was in Rumsey House, West Quad, during the early 80s. The original Fab Five were in our house (Rellford, Jokisch, Wade, Henderson, and Tarpley). We (none of those guys, but just the students living there in general) had some outrageous waterfights that year, literally water running down the stairs. In this day and age, any one of these waterfights would probably be national news and we would all be kicked out. A bucket of water over the head was part of the culture as the year went on. So much so that having a bucket of water dumped on your head while entering through the main door was so ingrained that we learned to look up EVERY TIME we went into the house.

One fine beautiful day in the spring a group of us was out tossing a football in the courtyard. It was very bucolic, frisbees, tunes blasting out of dorm room windows, etc. Spring fever. So Jokisch comes along, and he was a great guy. A number of us knew him well and played with or against him in the Detroit Catholic League. We got him to join us, and he was standing strategically under a stairway window, just playing catch. A couple of us grabbed a bucket and worked our way across the dorm to the third-floor window in Williams House directly above where Paul was standing.

Needless to say, we got him good.

I lived with a basketball player through grad school around this time. Went to Charlies with Wade a few times. He was a good dresser and had a Bear Bryant style hat and was a great , great guy.

On a very tragic note I remember a party at South Quad around that time seeing Roy passed out in a bathroom stall. It took many guys to move him. I thought he had too many beers but sadly found out later it wasn't beer...

Biggest dude in our hall, could have played on the FB team, he was that kind of big.  Every morning, like 630am, he'd walk down the hall and yell

"GOOD MORNING FOURTH DOUG!"

My roommate put a trash can through a sixth floor bathroom window in south quad. I was looking at the damage when Tim Biakabutuka came in and threatened to kick my ass if I did not tell him who did it. (He was friends with our RA who was getting a lot of heat for how out of control our hall was).

My first thought was run but I figured that was unlikely to work out in my favor. I denied all knowledge and got out of there with a warning from Tim that he knew I was full of it.

I'm Couzens also, spent my Freshman year there 08-09. Was in the only Quad in the entire building, room 2418. Had some of the best times of my life there. When I moved in the RA saw my roommates and I drilling holes into the wall to mount our TV which was totally against the rules. He didn't say anything and I could swear that was the last time I saw him. He didn't give a shit which was a huge plus.

I remember this one time my buddy Zack and AC Slater settled into their room. Another buddy we called Screech arrived. Screech had arranged to be sharing the room as well. Later on a girl named Leslie walked into the room as we were all standing around in our underwear. Zack was visibly embarrassed, but pretended not to be as Leslie taunted him just a little.
