I was a huge gamer in college (not so much anymore) and have followed gaming-related news and, along with many others, think that pre-ordering is ruining gaming. What pre-ordering does, essentially, is allow studios to release games whenever they want, regardless of how well developed or ready they are. Studios get away with releasing shitty versions of games because they've already made their money. As a consumer base, we should critically, not blindly, consume new media and entertainment. That is the only way to incentivize studios to produce quality games.

This -- it's one of the many factors ruining gaming.  So many mediocre or downright shitty games are setting record Day 1 sales nowadays.  That people are going giddy over a 90 second trailer just because it has Inkblots music and "War never changes" is just pathetic.  Social workers and drug treatment specialists have a term for this.  It's "Enablers".  It's when you are so accomodating or forgiving of someone's repeated offenses that you can be considered part of the problem.

I'm a PC gamer and haven't owned a console since N64.  These sorts of shenanigans happen all the time in PC gaming.  I've been burned a few times and have stopped paying for anything while it's still in "beta."  Planetside 2 was the breaking point for me.  I loved PS1, paid a sub for a good year or so before that game went to shit.  I was so excited for PS2 and SOE strung people along by saying their shitty game "is still in beta! anything can change!" even though the cash shop was open.  The actual game never materialized; in two years they didn't improve the gameplay at all and just kept milking the shit out of people by releasing more cash shop items for people to buy.

I can understand supporting a kickstarter for some indie game company to make a game, but people shouldn't subsidize a big studio with pre-orders and paid beta access.  It's like when the rich billionaire owners of sports teams con the local fanbase into building a new stadium with public funds.  The big game companies are just laughing at you.

Pre-ordering itself isnt inherintly bad.  Having an idea of demand in the form of dollars and cents makes producing enough for release day that much easier while it makes over-producing that much less likely.

The entire problem with the gaming industry is that consumers have absolutely NO recourse.  When a game drops and completely fails the consumer is stuck eating the money.  The industry claims copyright as the reason you can't return something once you cracked the wrapper.  This allows games like Sim City, Project Cars, and Diablo 3 to be made and the development shops just sit back and say "We'll fix it".  Look at how many games EA has botched completely on release and it took a year for them to get to the state it should have been.  Consumers really need to have recourse in these situations.  Developers occasionally recognize their fault, but even then, the most they do is give a 2 year old game to the consumer and expect that will make everything ok.

Friend of mine bought Forza Horizon 2 and the game never worked.  Swapped out the game at the store as he was unsure if it was a bad disc.  Still didn't work.  Game started, went to a spash screen then never left.  Reformated his Xbox, still same problem.  Problem was reported on the forums by many people.  Some people it eventually got fixed, others it didn't.  Every attempt to get his money back either never got responded to or was told that due to copyright laws a game cannot be returned (Even told by the developer this).

It's absolute BS that the consumer takes on all the risk of a product and has no recourse to get their money back if the product isn't up to par.

It truly is. I can run anything on full settings at 60 frames so far. I'm sure I'll need an upgrade when VR becomes a thing, but I'll cross that bridge when we get there.

And I probably could have waited, but the TI is so much more expensive than the plain-jane 980. Almost to the point where if I was going to get the TI, I may was well get the Titan X.

Hopefully it won't be another boring and repetitive game where 90% of the content is procedurally generated, like every other Bethesda RPG of the past 10 years.

Debating getting it. Heard nothing but great things, but I haven't played the series before and know absolutely nothing about any of the characters or stories.

Does anyone know if I need to know anything about the series before playing?

Nah, you're good. The game's intro will give you the barebones of what has happened to the world in the game. Each game is basically a seperate story that takes place in that same post apocalyptic world.

However, if you are interested in the games, I would recommend playing Fallout 3 or New Vegas. The new one should be pretty similar to those, give or take.

when I was younger. I only ever played sports games (and still do), and I didn't ever have xbox live so I was literally playing hours against the computer. Numbed the mind for sure.

I dabbled in fall out 3 and liked it, but I don't have the patience for these kinds of games sadly.

Unrelated video game chat:

I keep seeing "Zoltan Kovacs" running around in Guild Wars 2. Which one of you is this?

Still, that was a great trailer. I have a bit of a bittersweet relationship with Fallout. I really enjoyed the games but the only concern I have is the engine. It looks like they are using the same as last gen (if honest, this is more like a half-gen this go around). I'm not a graphics whore all that's fine but F3 & FNV (as well as Oblivion/Skyrim) were buggy messes! In fact, New Vegas broke my original 60gb PS3! It's still in there as I wait to get it fixed properly one day soon but I bought a slim with another copy of New Vegas to play so I do enjoy them. This looks great but I genuinely hope for those that play it (I might....maybe) that the engine is fixed. It's one thing to notoriously crash but breaking a perfectly fine console was my "holy shii" moment lol. I'd only had it in for about 20 mins but it had the console cranked up to 11 by brute forcing that code through there.....

I f-ing love MGoBlog. I've been so excited about this announcement and have been looking for someone/somewhere to share my excitement. None of my friends got into Fallout like I did. Can't frickin wait for this release!!!!!!!!! I've played Fallout 3 and NV multiple times, and finally got NV on my PC just to mess with the mods, which I love. Now I'm wondering if I should get Fallout 4 on PC or PS4? Anyone else having this debate? I love mods, but just worried my PC won't be able to handle Fallout 4 without some major upgrades ($$$).

as I just recently stopped adding that to all my posts. In every header I'd write "sorry, using app" but then I thought that so many use it that only the douchiest of nozzles say anything anymore. I used to get one every 10 posts or so but I haven't in a few months. I think it's been addressed at least in the hearts of posters. Keep your caps, friend. However, if you have a stimpack I'd be much obliged....ha

I used to be a hardcore gamer and I can't stand all three of those things. I've never understood the Dew, pot, alcohol, etc gaming crowd. Also, cheetos while gaming? Chees'n up your controller or keyboard? Gross. I'm sophisticated as I liked to slam a speedball, cool it off with a few xanax and wonder why "Big Boss's bright red camo isn't working in the Russian jungles"......ha

Looking for console upgrade input.
I have three boys: 9 and twin 7's. They are currently on wii u but are staring to ask about the other consoles. Should I go Xbox or Playstation?

If you're not already tied to the Xbox (all your friends on Xbox, must have Halo, etc)? The PS4 all the way IMO. I was on Xbox the last two gens and made the switch back to Sony this gen (along with most of my friends). Hardware is better (how much so is hotly debated and I won't get into it) and it's selling at a record pace (typically means it'll get catered to more by 3rd parties).

no fanboy but it's the better console this gen, IMO. It's the stronger console but both PS4/Xone are not the giant generation leaps previous consoles have been. This is like a ".5" gen, IMO. That said, games are already better on PS4 and it's only going to widen as devs utilize the full potential of each. Not to get nerdy but Sony surprised a lot by going with 8gb of GDDR5 RAM (the RAM used in high end PC graphics cards) while Xone went with 8gb of DDR3 (basically the same as last gen). It doesn't sound like a big deal but when one can read/write in the same cycle at a faster rate & the other can only read or write in a cycle at a slower rate it makes a difference. RAM is very important in gaming due to the constant need of fast data access, constantly cycling. It's more important than the CPU once above a certain speed (as both are but the Xone does have a faster CPU). Both consoles are struggling to hit 1080p/60fps this gen but Xone is struggling to run these new games above 720p at 60fps. The general rule last gen was HD in 720p but most rarely hit that AND 60fps. To go higher on one meant to go lower on the other. Most COD games ran sub-720p to hit 60fps. This gen is the same thing but with 1080p & 60fps. Most think the PS4 can get there consistently on both by the end of the cycle but nobody in the industry is saying that about Xone. It just can't and the PS4 may never consistently do it! Still, right now even the PS4 tends to go 30fps on games hitting the mandated 1080p outside of a few exceptions out now and coming. I don't think any Xone game has hit 1080p & a solid 30fps without heavily sacrificed visuals. There may be a few exceptions but not any I can name. So, in a gen where both major consoles are sadly weaker than technology allows, go with the PS4. IMO, this is going to be the way console gaming goes until Sony or Microsoft bow out. Neither can risk $600 machines that don't sell so they decided to make weaker machines but each generation will be shorter now. Don't be stunned if talk of PS5/NeXBox happens late next year as we'll be buying consoles that are essentially mid-range gaming PCs for $399 every 5 years. Is it a better model? We'll see but I do miss the N64/PS1 & GC/PS2/Xbox gens as you had one console for the great Nintendo stuff and EVERY game was in PS2 so everyone owned one. I funny say that out of Sony loyalty but simplicity. I hate the fanboy wars we have now and I hate the "timed exclusive dlc" crap that is only around because of a legitimate 3rd console. Instead of making gaming better it's killing it, IMO. Yet, if I had one console to buy this gen it'd be PS4. No question or debate. Next gen? we'll see.

I agree with most of your post. I do think it's worth pointing out that even though the PS4/One aren't as cutting edge as some past consoles were at launch, they're still far more powerful than their predecessors. The 360 was 8 years old and the PS3 was 7 y/o when the PS4/One launched. I'm not sure if I agree with the ".5" comment with that in mind... Relative to say, the original Xbox to the 360 only being 4 years apart and the PS2 to PS3 being 6 years apart even with the PS2 being a sales monster... The leap from last gen to this one is still large.

Both are great and I don't think there's a huge difference between the two in terms of gaming it may just come down to which one you think more of their friends will be on.

Alternatively you can see which one has exclusives that work better with their interests.  If they like baseball games, Playstation has the exclusive on the only one worth playing.
