OT - Exonerated player gets NFL gig

Submitted by hopkinsdrums on

Didn't see that this had been posted but found it to be a great story.

As previously posted on this blog (and news outlets everywhere), former USC commit Brian Banks, served a 5-year prison sentence for a rape he didn't commit, and was later exonerated. Now the Atlanta Falcons have signed him. Just awesome to see that his life has been turned around as he richly deserves.

I remember reading his story in August or so, and they were saying that a team was probably going to sign him sooner or later.  Great to hear his life has finally turned around so much.

Remember this story from years back. Felt so bad for that kid (now man) as they have the woman who accused him on audio and video admitting she lied but "didn't wanna give da money back" (she sued the school for a few million). mazing thing? The state hasn't come for their money despite overwhelming evidence/confession she lied and he practically has forgiven her. Said she wanted to hook up after he got out and she admitted (!) but he basically said he forgives her but to stay away from him. Better mannered than me. Happy he is on an NFL squad (for now at least).

Absolutely. How she hasn't had to give the money back is one thing but how she hasn't even been threatened with jail time is another. She ruined this guy's life! 10 years GONE. The 10 years that, major athlete or regular guy, are your life building years he spent in jail or on major house arrest as a registered sex offender. How that piece of s*it hasn't faced any consequences is amazing. You'd think the state would be doing to her life what she said he did to her but not a single penalty as of this moment and looks like none in the future. Sued the school and won $1.3 Million (IIRC. That or 3.1) and she keeps every penny. He was a teen boy making out with a girl at school and he picked the wrong girl. Sadly, rape is one of those crimes where once the woman accuses it you are guilty until proven innocent and innocent rests on basically the woman admitting she is lying before you rot in jail. That or just an outlandish story torn apart by several people with timeframe video proof.

Shut the fuck up with that bullshit. It has nothing to do with the empowerment of women. It's because people consider rape as serious of a crime as it is. It's certainly not a good thing that consent is hard to prove in the court of law - and it's even worse that some women would take advantage of it - but don't blame feminism.

I've never seen a feminist group organize a march or gathering of any kind to educate women on the ethics of falsely, purposefully accusing innocent men of rape.

Goes to the Bahamas, he and buddies hook up with chicks who on video before and after alleged rape seem absolutely down and ok cry rape. IIRC, she later admitted she was a willing participant and cried rape to not look like the slut the video made her clearly look like after her Dad heard she was drinking on vacation. Yet, after, the guy had a hard time even getting tryouts.

Case in point.

It's okay for women to ruin lives, long as their feelings are fine at the end of the day.

Right?

Maybe my flu but I honestly don't get what you're trying to say. Can we all just agree that rape is atrocious and women who claim it have their right to be heard? Yet, it's such an awful crime that once accused the accused is instantly guilty until proven otherwise and that is a very hard thing to do and if done still stains the accused life forever? Throw in that a man or woman can literally be willing and wanting only to say "stop" at partner's climax and it be classified as rape. Can we just admit there is no true justice for the genuinely raped or wrongfully accused? That it's THAT messed up and SUCH a slippery slope of defense by bias of many types?
Let us just end this all there as I don't know who is agreeing with who or what points are being made for or against as I'm on Dennis Leary levels of NyQuil and other flu meds. haha

I never want to take rape lightly or claim women don't have the right to justice! However, it's just one of those crimes so terrible that once accused you are assumed guilty. Even if proven innocent the stain never goes away. I think something similar happened to that CBB at FIU who had that crazy hit streak years back.

I'm not a "she was asking for it" guy. I myself have stopped what was going to clearly lead to getting laid just because the woman was drunk and I didn't want to feel I took advantage over her (she found that sweet and we got together the next weekend sober, lol). Rape is just so terrible that once accused.....kiss your old life goodbye guilty or not.

I guess it's possible you were saying something even worse, given your other comments above. But your second question here makes little sense. I was indeed being sarcastic, but had I been projecting my sarcasm on to you, I'd have thought you were mocking the poster before you. But obviously I didn't think that. So no?

ironically i was going to post a more detailed explanation of my single, specific critique of feminism, which is a failure on their behalf to educate women on the negative consequences of accusing innocent men of rape...on PURPOSE.

I have no problem with women ending rape culture, arguing for fair standards in the workplace, all that good stuff.

If that makes you see me as the worst person on the internet, cool

When did it become the unique province of feminists (but not parents or teachers) to educate women (but not men) about the evils of falsely accusing innocent men of rape (but not other kinds of false accusations)? And when did feminists decide to abdicate this educational role...on PURPOSE?

What she did hurts women in my opinion, when you cry rape when it's not rape, people are less likely to listen to real cases. Just like crying wolf, plus she took away 10 years of his life. Shouldn't be able to just walk away from that

Have you guys heard of "After Innocence" documentary?  Follows the After Innocence project, they promoted it a lot on campus in '06.  It's on netflix and quite the eye opener on the legal system.  Super scary,  and super sad.... It's on netflix and I strongly recommend it.
