OT: Ex-Bo assistant Elliot Uzelac coaching again at 74

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on

Elliot Uzelac was the Michigan OL Coach when Harbaugh was playing.  He also did stints at Western and Navy.

He's out of retirement at 74 to help turn around Benton Harbor, a team that hasn't won a game in two years.  Their last winning season was in 1989.

He's pretty fired up about the Harbaugh hire too.

"Jimmy will do great at Michigan," Uzelac said. "He was a great player and fierce competitor. Michigan needs physical toughness and mental discipline, and Jimmy will make sure they get it."

He coached at St Joseph high school in MI and turned them around from winless to being a perineal playoff contender. I expect him to do the same. Isn't a SJHS player on our recruiting radar?

I hate St. Joe?  (Sorry Gillette.)  Lost by 1 to them in both my junior and senior years, the latter when the PAT hit the upright in the first half.  They had a sort of Michigan-toward-Eastern-Michigan attitude toward us.  I wish they had stayed winless.

Go Lancers.

Good ole coach "U".  I didn't like him.  He never played me, but probably because I'm a Koala and I bite too much.  Whatever!  St. Joe hasn't been the same team since he left.

I was a manager for the team and Coach Uzelac was the offensive line coach.  I was breaking down for practice and all the offensive lineman were huddled around coach.

I heard him say... "I want each and everyone of you to go to training table and then come back tonight so we can study film."

One of the lineman spoke up and said, "Coach, I have a test tomororw".  I thought to myself, this is the defining moment... What kind of program are we running. Are we doing it the right way or the wrong way?

Coach U looked at him and said.. "you're excused, the rest of your asses better be here tonight"

I was never more proud to be a part of Michigan Football.

It's going to be a tough assignment there for him, but hopefully he can get it turned around. BH enrollment has been declining over the past few years and they are dropping from their current league (St. Joe, Lakeshore, Portage/Kzoo schools). Would be a nice fit in the new BCS or SAC conferences (or better yet, the two small SWMI leagues combine to form a mega league like the OK).

He is the h.s hall of fame from Muskegon Heights from back in the 50s and 60s. That's when Heights was one of the Big Three in Muskegon, along with Muskegon and CC, all of them being Class A at that time. He won a ton on mythical state championships and sent a lot of kids to D1, including my bro-in- law to UM.

He came out of retirement to take over a Baldwin team that couldn't afford to pay a head coach in the early 80s.  Tremendous man and a great coach.

As to the poster that stated he couldn't take the approach he did at UM, he probably skipped over the part that mentioned he had coached neighboring S. Joes, another h.s. team.

I played against benton harbor every year since youth "rocket" football. I know we're focusing on the high school squad, but I don't know if any coach of any caliber can get those boys to play.

They have an insane amount of talent around there, but none of them care about football enough. Yes, there will be a couple players but not nearly enough.

Okay, so maybe I went to far by saying no coach of any caliber, but it's going to be very tough. They have barely been fielding a team the past 7 years. Who ever gets in there just needs to get kids to come out and play. They don't seem to be very interested over there. I know these kids dont want to play for a losing team, but one of the reasons they are losing is because a lot of the kids that have talent arent playing!!

Corey Malone-Hatcher plays in the same division as Benton Harbor...Little fun fact I remembered while typing.

We had a coach go there from my school...One Hell of a coach. I considered him the best that has taught me, but the kids didnt take to his coaching. He is very hard and expects a lot out of you. I dont know what its going to take, but I wish Coach Uzelac the best of luck.
