OT: Euro 2016 France vs. Iceland (3:00pm EDT, ESPN)

Submitted by Wolverine In Iowa on

Neutrals' favorite Iceland takes on host France in what I see the end of the road for Iceland.  Led by Antone Griezmann, France should win by two.  I expect a good, clean match between two teams that respect each other.

Two things. First that's not a Viking chant. It was a chant used by Scottish fans of Motherwell. Second, no one should replicating anything the Vikings did because the Vikings were murderous thieves who were the moral equivalent of the Conquistadors and Slave Traders. They were bad human beings. The name "Viking" needs to be seen in the same light as those two. They are not worthy of admiration whatsoever. The bizarre and quite frankly offensive softening of the Viking into something innocuous needs to be ended. We need to stop mythologizing the Vikings and see them for what they were-- thugs. Yes, they were great seafarers and warriors, but they used those skills to steal, slaughter, and in some places colonize. *rant over*

already made a little history by engineering the very early "Brexit" of the England side. Don't see a repeat against France, however. It'll be great to hear all those folks shouting "Go Blue" in French for their national team (nicknamed "the Blues"): Allez les Bleus!"

I mostly only follow international soccer, so I don't watch it much outside of the summer.  I forget about some aspects of the game that are so different from North American sports.  The thing that gets me the most is how efficient soccer (and rugby) is in terms of time.  You play a 90-minute game and it fits comfortably into a 2-hour timeslot.  (Usually it's over in 1 hr 45.)

Yesterday's Germany-Italy game had 120 minutes of action followed by a penalty shootout that went into sudden death (for multiple rounds)  - and it was over in about 2 1/2 hours.

Meanwhile our domestic leagues treat us with the utmost contempt, cramming commercial break after commercial break (and making the breaks longer and longer), so that a 60-minute football game takes 3 1/2 hours.

This is why I think soccer and hockey are the best spectator sports. And I don't think it's even close. Ice hockey still has commercials but the flow of the game dictates the breaks. I loathe attending American football games because of the commercials. I'll go to a high school game rather than a college or NFL game.

Fun game, every time the announcers say Pogba: take a drink. I expect to be dead from alcohol poisoning roughly halfway through the pregame.

It's because some can't get over Karim Benzema being left off the team.  Never mind that he allegedly blackmailed his own French teammate, Mathieu Valbuena, and is facing criminal charges.  (Valbuena has also been left off the team, incidentally - he has much more reason to cry foul.)

Giroud is guilty of the crime of starting in Benzema's old spot, so these geniuses boo him.

Triple dam. Iceland fans will have an entire half to pay respects to their team and their great run. Edit: ouch. Halftime needs to get here soon.
