OT: ESPN College Football Playoff Ad (w/ Jimmy Kimmel) has funny UM/OSU gag

Submitted by wahooverine on

**praying to the gods of the internet this hasn't been posted yet. I did check and haven't seen it.

Anyway, posting this for a fun Friday aftenoon laugh. If you've watched ESPN recently you might have seen their new ad promoting the College Football Playoffs on New Year Eve. The ad features Jimmy Kimmel, Robin Thicke, Josh Duhamel and large random assortment of mascots, cheerleaders, song girls, and atheletes singing a rendition of Auld Lang Sein at a fancy NYE party.

In the full version you'll notice a maize bowtied guy wearing a blue Michigan sweater take part in the song.  Nearby is an OSU fan in a red OSU sweater. As the song ends the Michigan and OSU guy have unknowingly put their arms around each other, apparently distracted in their jubilation. When the song ends they notice each others sweaters and then immediately separate with looks of disgust on their faces.  For some reason I find the reaction of the Michigan dude hilarious.

I also think it's cool that ESPN is basically affirming the Game is the best rivalry in college football. They could have picked Bama/Auburn or others.

The ad is 60 seconds long and worth a full look. If you're the impatient type cut to 00:40 seconds in.

Edit: I can't get the embed to work for some reason.

Nope.  Only saw it once.

The fan was from "Maryland Tech" or some other ficticious school, but had maize and blue face paint.  The fan was sitting in an empty stadium, upset that a two loss team wouldn't be able to make the playoffs.  It aired during the Minnesota game.

Glad that the Michigan Man was dressed appropriately as a man - with a bow tie and appropriate sweater while the Ohio State fan was one of their hooded sweatshirts which are synonymous with "I'm nearly homeless."

I have upvoted everyone for their participation in this thread!!!

If you didn't like the thread, you don't need to click on it, or reply with a witty or sarcastic or insulting comment. It's just a waste of your time to troll the thread or troll the OP because YOU don't want to read a thread on MGOBLOG! In fact, it's not even ok to think that something someone posted isn'f funny. If you don't want to laugh, then just don't laugh, but we don't need to be negative or say not nice things about someone because they aren't funny. It's only ok for a select few of us to act this way and police the blog commentary of other users or to say that something someone posted is "stupid and unfunny".

Ok fella. Way to be unneccessarily vindictive. And what clever wordplay.

Significant: sufficiently worthy of attention; noteworthy.  Michigan and it's archrival are promininently featured in a constantly running national commercial featuring at least 4 major celebrities and the mascots of several blue blood or major programs. Does that not meet your definition of sigificant?

Really? The term "media instance" is funnier than Kimmel?  You sound fun. Please keep you're valuable contributions coming.

say your definition of prominently is a bit skewed as well. Having  random actors in team sweaters is neither significant nor prominent for the programs.

You make it sound as if "Kimmel" is just some always hilarious entity. He has some funny stuff, but it was not on display here. Most people seem to agree that this was not funny.

Not the OP's fault but old joke, not particularly well done, though I do like the image of a puny and likely unathletic Ohio State fan. That's fun.

It was hard not to notice the UCLA mascot seemed to be having quite the time all by himself, but after all he is a bear and he lives the single life in Los Angeles, or at least this is what I presume.

Regarding the video itself, I don't think ESPN allows embeds directly from the site. I tried to find it elsewhere but couldn't, so like the stuff from the NFL Network, you may have to wait until someone rips it to YouTube or some other service.

What I do like is that they are addressing the issue head-on of one of the Playoff games competing directly against New Years Eve, and having some fun with it.

There was (and still is) a lot of controversy about this.  The CFB playoff is not the Chick Fil A bowl.  If you are a CFB fan, it's a must watch.  There are countless wives and girlfriends that are going to be pissed off this year.

I did not even tell my wife this could happen.  Why borrow trouble?  If we get so lucky, I'll call an audible and come up with something on the fly.
