They also updated all of their basketball recruiting format
August 22nd, 2011 at 11:25 PM ^
now all they need to do is change our ranking for the 2012 class, because it's definitely better than #5

While we're on the subject of formatting... ;)

Beat me to it. The "Enter" key is your friend, OP.

formatting needed. OP - use this:
It is a very slow night, so I thought I would give everyone a heads up. I scare easily and started panicing when I first saw it.
- Here is the slightly different team profile ...now the commit date is listed
- If you like video games the new player format should please you
- The considering profile has received a much needed update
- New to the site is the offer list and visit list: Offers
- Visits
Overall its a good update, this definitely makes Espn recruiting more user friendly.

Awesome, now all they need to do is fix their rankings and everything else that actually matters.

Looks like Tom VH is already kickin ass at ESPN and taking names.

He will kick ass, and take names.
And be cryptic. TomVH will always be cryptic.
That being said. I can't wait to see what Ace and Heiko can contribute to MGoBlog and the MGoCommunity.

I have a question about recruiting services and ranking systems that I think would fit well into this post.
Rivals, Scout, ESPN, 247, etc each have their own ranking systems, resulting in differences of opinion about how good players project to be.
What if there was a way to better quantify recruits rankings?
I was thinking of developing some kind ranking system that is based on offers that kids receive.
It would take some thought about how exactly to make it work, but it seems to me that the best high school players receive the most offers from the most successful schools.
Personally, I get much more excited when we get a kid with offers from OSU, ND, Bama, etc than seeing that they have 4 stars. To me, the offers a kid gets are indicative of the quality of player because if they have offers from all the top schools then that means they have been evaluated by each coaching staff and seen as able to contribute to their team.
You would have to find a way to quantify the success of all FBS teams and award a certain number of points to a recruit based on an offer from that school.
Mathlete, I'm looking at you! What do ya think?
August 23rd, 2011 at 1:38 AM ^
I'm no expert with the maths, but I think some sort of network analysis could be really interesting, with players with like offers being grouped into clusters. I don't know if this would lend itself to an ordinal ranking, but it would be neat to see how the clusters shaped up -- I imagine you'd see some neat results with respect to the interplay of talent, regional location, and coaching ties.

The problem with a system like this is that 1. Offers aren't verifiable (a kid could claim offers when it's only interest) 2. Early commits who are solid typically don't get as many offers as kids who wait.

<br>Is still be interested to see the results.

Also, when you first click the NCAA fb link and when you go to click recruiting, there is a new drop down menu for team specific recruiting sites. Right now the only 2 up are USC and Texas. Could this be where Tom is headed?
August 23rd, 2011 at 4:18 AM ^
According to the site, there are many more prospects "considering" Michigan than there were for a long time. It seems like to ESPN "considering" means 'has mentioned'.
The committed dates are all out of whack still.
The offers list and visit dates are an excellent upgrade.
August 23rd, 2011 at 7:28 AM ^
Aren't those commit dates whack? They show all of UM's commits committing on or after August 8. It looks as if they started on that date and just gave all preexisting commits that date as a commitment date.
Am I missing anything?
August 23rd, 2011 at 9:20 AM ^
No that is the way I see it as well. I agree, I think they just decided to mark August 8 as the starting day and going from there.
August 23rd, 2011 at 10:17 AM ^
Now you can check out Greg Mattison's (and others) targets, commits, and career stats. Pretty cool.

They definitely seem to have lifted a lot of the look from the NCAA12 series. Life mimics art? Well ESPN isn't really life I suppose.

Considering their involvement with that game over the years (announcers, graphics, presentation, Erin Andrews, etc) its not too surprising.
