OT: Epic rant by S. Illinois bball coach
First topic created, apologies if I'm not within the guidelines - but this is worth a listen.
Southern Illinois coach Barry Hinson gives a great post game recap of his teams loss against Murray State. While I love the class and restraint that our coaching staff's show during pressers, it is sometimes entertaining to get good sound bites instead of the same ol same ol rabble rabble
"I've been telling my wife this for years, Size doesn't matter."

Angling to be hired at Rutgers?

A total prick move by that coach. No coach should ever call out his players like that in a presser. That makes this guy look like a complete asshole. If it is a professional team, then MAYBE a coach can do that, but not with college or lower.
December 18th, 2013 at 11:37 AM ^
But still hilarious
December 18th, 2013 at 12:05 PM ^
A coach can definitely do it to a professional team....they are professionals and should be treated as such. College kids on the other hand should never be called out in a presser like that.

Yeah, I obviously understand your point about pros, but that this kind of shit can cause lots of animosity amongst players and the coach (talking pros here). That is bad for business. I suppose it's OK to do it behind closed doors, but to publicly embarrass your players like that, not cool. That is not coaching IMO. The coach is there to teach the players how to do it. Calling them out in public, which likely becomes viral, is never a good thing.

Unless I'm mistaken (I saw this on ESPN at the gym and didn't read a transcript) he called out the TEAM, not individual players. If the calls out the team in the way that I thought he did, it is totally 100% legit, especially after that performance. Calling out the team is always fine, calling out individual college players is not. There is a difference.

You go, Glenn Coco!
December 18th, 2013 at 11:54 PM ^
DP? Didn't know sports were involved in that...

In a lot of professions, you would be adding the word "former" to your title after such an episode, so it will be interesting to see what the school does. He said right at the start that "they won't let me coach them", and if this is how it is on a daily basis, I can sort of understand why that might be.
December 18th, 2013 at 11:57 AM ^
issued a statement of support. Only condemded the specific use of player's names and said the fans love the coach.
December 18th, 2013 at 11:42 AM ^
He needs to take lessons from Jim Mora (old version).

I have seen Southern Illinois play unfortunately, and this coach was too nice on those kids. They play like a bunch of pussies. No problem with what the coach said, pretty funny actually, and the player who went and cried on twitter about it, look at his stat line, and he is a center, what a joke.

you really should find more value in your life than making fun of college athletes.

Says the guy with SheridanForHeisman as his username

BOOM!!!!
December 18th, 2013 at 1:59 PM ^
SheridanforHeisman you should really find more value in your life than taking offense to a post on mgoblog. You will probably get up voted by the rest of the mgodouchebags that add nothing to the board and complain about everyone elses posts, grammer, etc.
December 18th, 2013 at 2:03 PM ^
You mean GRAMMAR right?
December 18th, 2013 at 2:08 PM ^
That is exactly why I spelled it that way. Just to see which mgodouche would correct me first. dingding, you win!!!!!!!
December 18th, 2013 at 2:12 PM ^
I win?!! YES!!! I never win anything.
December 18th, 2013 at 2:22 PM ^
hahaha, I love this board!!!!!!!!!!!
December 19th, 2013 at 12:21 AM ^
you get to make a contentious comment--and then denigrate the Board in anticipation that it will not be well received. And then when the Board responds as expected, you get self-righteous about somehow being right. And while I hate the grammar police, claiming you did it on purpose, well isn't that convenient.
Oh, and your comment about players as pussies etc etc is, of course, classic sport's-blog tough-guy rhetoric from someone who couldn't dream of playing serious ball.
December 18th, 2013 at 11:49 AM ^
Haven't watched yet, but did he make any comments about being a man? Do we know if he is over 40?
December 18th, 2013 at 12:07 PM ^
Did he meow like a cat?
Still my favorite post game presser rant.
December 18th, 2013 at 11:55 AM ^
I kinda wondered how the board would react to this because there is so much consternatation regarding Hoke's pressers.
Granted, this is a total extreme... the complete opposite end of the spectrum, but I'd gladly take Coach Hoke's "coachspeak" over this any day.... especially calling out specific players.
December 18th, 2013 at 2:05 PM ^
When you are losing, or not living up to expectations, you are kind of "damned if you do, damned if you don't." Whatever Hoke says at this point would not satisfy the fans...
December 18th, 2013 at 11:58 AM ^
could shoot better than 2 for 11 because my wife! would know to shot fake!
i could just see his players: "oh god, he's talking about his wife again..."
December 18th, 2013 at 2:06 PM ^
What is this from? It is amazing.
December 18th, 2013 at 2:30 PM ^
SNL skit
December 18th, 2013 at 12:56 PM ^
was hilarious. "Marcus was AWFUL! Our guards were AWFUL!" Nothing like a coach calling out his players by name. That was funny.
December 18th, 2013 at 12:57 PM ^
This was a hilarious interview. If we are at a point where a coach can't go Bobby Knight on a team but can't use humor to get his point across, either, than how are coaches supposed to coach?
I can't wait to see this guy get a job in a major media market.
December 18th, 2013 at 1:24 PM ^
I didnt realize Al Borges could change his appearance and his voice like that. At least he is consistent at blaming the kids.
December 18th, 2013 at 2:33 PM ^
To anyone who is offended by this rant; did you ever have a dad? Was that a thing in your household growing up? One of those dad things?
He's trying to get his kids to do better by putting a finger on their chest and challenging them. Believe it or not, sometimes it comes to that.
December 18th, 2013 at 3:23 PM ^
Not just a dad thing. Also a mom thing. I, in fact, made a speech like this just last night.
December 18th, 2013 at 3:38 PM ^
There's a difference between your dad doing that in your own house and having your dad talk trash about you to OTHER PEOPLE, most notably the media. If my dad did that, I'd think he was a cock and I'd lose all motivation to work for him.
I'm generally okay with your posts, but the implied "you had a bad father or no father and you suck because of it" is a bit over the line.
December 18th, 2013 at 3:55 PM ^
I was trying to imply that people in general should get over these types of things because I got this and then some from my dad when I pulled half-assed shit. I am willing to give the coach of the team the benefit of the doubt about his teams effort. His team probably deserved a bit of a lashing. Maybe he should have kept it "in-house" but shit happens.
I am not implying anything about having or not having a dad and/or sucking because of it. I think it is sad when anybody misses out on a family member.
December 18th, 2013 at 4:20 PM ^
To me, this kind of thing needs to be kept in-house because of the signal it sends. Public shaming like this sends the message that the coach thinks his kids actually suck and has no confidence in their ability. Public defending and private shaming tells the kids "you played poorly, but you are not poor. Now step it up, slackers."
December 18th, 2013 at 4:12 PM ^
Lame. Not enough uncontrolled rage. Too many staged statements. Weak. If a coach IS going to rant, they had better rant harder than their players played. Now where's that clip of Mike Gundy I was watching...
December 18th, 2013 at 6:26 PM ^
if you think that's the best way for you to get the best from them. Not my preferred approach but I've seen it work.
Doing it at the press conference, while calling players out by name, and saying "they won't let me coach them" is a flashing neon sign that he's lost the team. This guy isn't someone I'd want coaching a charity event, much less a college sport where the fig leaf justification is to teach the student-athletes character, discipline and teamwork.
December 18th, 2013 at 7:17 PM ^
This guy wants his wife on the team! That presser was a trip!
December 18th, 2013 at 7:20 PM ^
Running discussion in our home at one time. I would love for Bobby Knight to coach my sons, as I know he was going to get the most out of them! My wife always worried for their safety . . . message to team: LISTEN to the Coach and you have a lot BETTER chance of winning! Time to grow up -- and put on your big boy boots!
December 18th, 2013 at 9:33 PM ^
Is this rant just his way of saying "we just didn't execute"?
