OT: EMU bans bags at stadium. Fan disappointed.
"The school says the policy is meant to provide a safer environment for the public while expediting fan entry into stadiums. Eastern Michigan also says it is consistent with similar policies at NFL stadiums."
Hahahahahahahahahahaha. Deep breath. Hahahahahahahaha.

There are going to be dozens impacted by this epic change of policy. Fans should probably stop going to games.

As I recall, it wasn't so much an outright ban as it was the creation of a generous "Fan-free zone" around Rynearson. Now, as far as I am aware, both people who have violated this zone have not been punished, but otherwise the idea has been a wild success for Eastern, one of the worst-positioned football programs in Division I if not the worst when it comes to getting talent....and fans.

Almost every team has one year where they absolutely defy expectations and put it all together. That has completely eluded Eastern Michigan. I have no clue since I'm just going off memory, but I can't remember the last time they even finished something like 9-3.

in my quick glance of the front page I read this as "EMU bans fans at stadium." Somehow, reading it like that didn't surprise me.

They have already done that.

Or EMU bans fa...uh, maybe I should stop now.

I wonder if they just have someone walk around and manually count the number of people in attendance.
August 11th, 2016 at 11:17 AM ^
Man, I really wish they could have some success (at least back to the days of Charlie Batch) and build a fanbase. I'll always hope for the best for our neighbors in Ypsi.

If they switched back to a green field from gray, would they have that many fans show up?
August 11th, 2016 at 11:23 AM ^
They definitely had more fans to watch them play on the concrete turf.

Like a poor man's BU. Drop football, try to grow their respectable basketball program and use the money they were lighting on fire for football on being a D1 hockey program

Thanks EMU.

but most people think they should drop to FCS. I've seen them lose to FCS teams so I doubt that solves anything. They should hire Thomas Wilcher from Cass Tech and see if they can at least get the Detroit kids that are going to the other MAC schools. Establishing a pipeline with the Detroit kids would go a long way towards building that program up.

We've had discussions about this on here before (not, like, really recently, though, so don't feel bad). They have, by far, the lowest attendance in FBS. They are a black hole of football failure. And no, I don't think there are other contenders. They're at the bottom literally every year.
It's too bad, I want them to do well, stupid field and all. They actually looked legit last season when they were playing at LSU. They lost, of course, but just seeing them stringing together drives in Death Valley was... heartening.
It's a pity the program is such a disaster.

$99 gets you the Ultimate Fan Plan, which includes a chairback seat, free parking, food vouchers and a VIP Discount card. That's on the 50.
$75 if you want a non-chairback.
Catch the fever.

This would be funny, if it weren't so sad, and there weren't real effects on EMU's budget (which has led to job cuts).
EMU spent $52 million (much of it on football, which basically no one watches) over the past two years from its general budget.

Per this report (PDF), "the total cost of the athletics program to each student who completes a degree in four years is $3668"
$917 per year.
The crazest thing about the report is that Eastern only trails WMU in Athletic spending in the MAC. Ahead of all other schools, who actually win things occasionally. They spent more than $33m in 2015.

Came to the thread just to upvote the title. Then I had to upvote the first response, of course.
But this is just an awful, awful tragedy of a program. There have been years in my lifetime when they haven't been terrible, but it seems like they can never get a foothold and start building. No accomplished coach would ever take the job, and even promising coordinators would look everywhere else first, especially since other promising coordinators have come here and basically waved goodbye to their careers.
I'm afraid the football program needs to be euthanized. This is just sad.
August 11th, 2016 at 2:02 PM ^
Its difficult to make people safe when there are no people actually going to the games. The only people who might actually be going to those games are parents of players or opposing fans (do students at MAC schools really care that much about their team anyway?).
EMU either needs to step down into FCS or just completely shut down the football program. They're not doing themselves any favors by getting their collective asses kicked every year by every team they play. And I'm guessing they're not operating on the positive side of the financial spectrum either.
They are the SCLSU Mud Dogs of real world college football. Except there is no Bobby Boucher to come along and save them.

The banning everything at sporting events for safety excuse is really getting old...how did we possibly make it for 100 years without banning bags, flags, and bottles?

We didn't have suicide bombers. Even the anarchists and violent revolutionaries left Michigan Football alone. Today new mass murder plots are being detected regularly in places like Dearbornistan. The worm has turned.
