OT - Ed Reed to be released by Texans: Should Lions pursue?

Submitted by boliver46 on

Realizing he probably doesn't have much left in the tank - I would love to see a hard-nosed, great work-ethic/locker room guy like Ed Reed on the Lions as they push towards the playoffs.

Worth the shot, or don't mess with what's working?  Secondary depth is nice to have especially considering some of the "spread" teams we will face - plus the Monday nighter with Baltimore would be even sweeter...

Why would Ed Reed want to come to the Lions and ride the bench? Why would the Lions want to sign someone who is getting cut from a team that's won what...2 games this year?

Jim Brown is one of the greatest running backs of all time, but I wouldn't sign him to take handoffs on Sundays.

Simply being great doesn't earn you a spot on a football team. Houston's defense is about 7% more efficient than the Lions' defense, adjusted for opponent strength. I seriously question the value of disrupting team chemistry in the backfield by trying to plug in a safety that just got cut from a middle-of-the-road defense. If he couldn't make the field in Houston, why would we want him here?

Stolen from Reddit:

According to PFF he played pretty terrible.

Ed Reed Ratings

Snaps: 275

  • Rank (out of 86): 73

  • Overall Raiting: -6.3

  • Pass Rush Rating: -0.3

  • Coverage Rating: -1.6

  • Run Rating: -2.9

  • Penalty Rating: -1.5

Other Notes

  • He is the only Safety, with at least 25% snaps, to have 100% of passes thrown at him caught by the receiver. QB's throwing at him have a perfect 158.3 Rating.

  • He allowed the 4th longest catch at 64 yards.

  • Targeted the most out of any Safety in the league when in coverege

I think we should pass.

No, they don't need OL. At least not now. They will need a C to eventually replace Raiola, but their line is fine.

And TE?  Pettigrew and Fauria are a solid duo. I could see them drafting one if Pettigrew departs. But TE is a position of strength.

The Lions need a WR(or two), a rush end, OLB, RB, and maybe another CB.

with Bush and Bell on the team?  It's not a need IMO.

Lions positional needs are:

WR: need a good #2 WR in the worst way, could find one at 1st round (cue Lions draft WR jokes)

SAM LB: Need to find a starting LB, Palmer is a reserve LB, not starting LB.

Future starting OG and C to replace Sims and Riaola down the road

TE if Pettigrew doesn't resign

CB for depth. Need to develop Slay into a starter which I think will happen.

S for depth: Depth is scary if Quin/Delmas are out for extended period of

Not related to the OP, but apparently Brandon Marshall (very unoriginally) referred to Detroit (and the Lions??)  as the "little brother".  Of course, Marshall saying something stupid is always expected; he made mention of the city's financial problems, a subject on which he is a leading expert.  Is there any difference between him and Ron Artest?  Not sure what my point is, but it's a lot more fun watching and discussing the lions than Michigan football right now.

Pride of Detroit, the Lions' SBNation blog, was talking smack about Marshall on Twitter yesterday. Apparently Marshall said something about how the only games that matter are playoff games (in reference to how the Lions' sweep of the Bears isn't important), to which PoD pointed out that Marshall has never played in a playoff game.

The Baltimore Sun (like they wouldn't cover this) had this to add - HERE

"Any team that opted to sign Reed would owe him $411,000 in remaining base salary this year in addition to a $62,500 per game roster bonus for the remainder of the season.

He's due a $4 million base salary in 2014 and a $5 million base salary in 2015, both nonguaranteed. Reed took a $2 million advance from the Texans on his 2014 salary this year.

For those reasons and Reed's decline in play, if a team wants him, it's more likely they would work out a veteran minimum contract for this year with incentive clauses based on playing time and production."

I would sign him in a heartbeat. His "been there, done that" background can help steer the secondary on the march to the playoffs. Just my opinion though. Maybe I have Ed Reed blinders on.

One last run at a championship - and not much lost if you don't want him next year.

His "been there, done that" background can help...

I guess I wonder what you think Reed would bring to the Lions when he couldn't get playing time on a 2-7 Texans squad. The combination of pedigree and price make it really enticing on the surface, but he is available for a reason.

Now go out there and sign Randy Moss!

We need corners. Badly. Sick of Houston and Slay getting burnt all the time. Although, Slay doesn't act like a douche when he makes one play like Houston does.

I looked at all-22 tapes from last year compared to this year.  Last year, they played a lot of Cover 2 shell which helps out the CBs.  This year? They played a lot of Cover 1 and 3 with little to no safety help over the top.  The CBs are being put on an island all game long and that's a tough thing to do.

Slay is a rookie. All CBs suck in their 1st year in the league.  Some of the best CBs in the league have had terrible first year.  Slay will be good with time and experience.  He'll be real good down the road.  He's just not ready to be an impact player.  The problem with signing CBs at the moment is they're the FA CB for a reason.  Can't draft another CB because they will struggle just like Slay.  They got to stick with it and develop CBs.

Ed Reed has been one of the worst S in the league this year.  He has been real bad if you bother to watch the Texans.  There is a reason why a 2-7 team release him and do the Lions want him on the roster? No because they have Glover Quin and Louis Delmas, one of the better S duo in the league.

Reed's a flat out winner - plays with heart and plays two steps ahead of everyone on the field. It seems like he walked into a bad situation in Houston.  On the other hand, he didn't come into the season in playing shape due to late offseason surgery, and the shoulder injury he played with last season is the kind that won't completely go away until he retires.  So he's a hit or miss signing, but probably worth a shot on the chance he's rounding into shape.

You guys act like signing him is the end of the world.

You could easily sign the guy to the vet's minimum and cut him if it doesn't work out.

The decision is more about the 1 roster spot than money.

perhaps due to age, perhaps due to injury, likely a combination of the two, that Ed Reed couldn't play. He was slow, he couldn't tackle

it was discovered shortly after he signed that Reed would be undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his hip...Concern turned into skepticism and distrust over whether or not Reed knew he was damaged goods (How could he not?)

We played really well outside of certain situations. Certain situations, we just got outplayed and out-coached.

Bad player, contrary opinions, the willingness to voice said opinions.
