OT?: East Detroit forfeit playoff berth with ineligible students

Submitted by mgochips on

Hopefully this has nothing to do with Ron Thompson, and if it does hopefully it doesn't affect his recruiting. I am from the area and have caught wind that he is one of the two players involved but that is only hearsay. As for the school karma sucks, two years ago an East Detroit coach went on a witch hunt to find a kid ineligible that transferred and played football at Sterling Heights Parkway Christian, which forced them to forfeit their season. If i remember correctly the kid had a step parent who seperated with his birth mother and still lived in the district. Still sad for those kids and that community who have to go through that.

I don't understand why a player would play for a school outside of his district if the team isn't historically good, unless there are other benefits involved, which the article doesn't imply.

Waterford Kettering.  I think this was in '93.  Kettering started out 6-0 for the first time ever.  There was a kid on special teams that was a transfer from Pontiac Northern, and it turned out he was in his ninth semester.  For some reason we didn't know and still played the kid.  After our game with Northern (which we won), the Northern coach brings up that the kid's ineligible and Kettering had to forfeit all its games.  What a kick to the balls that was.
