OT: Dwight Howard to join Rockets

Title says it all. Dwight Howard chooses Houston over Golden State, Lakers, and Dallas.

...Howard is a big...and bigs do not get better with age. Howard is not the same player today that he was in Orlando. Plus he clearly does not have mental fortitude to be a leader. Wilt, Kareem, Shaquille he is not. Houston is still worse than Healthy Spurs, OKC, Clips and Golden State...with Howard.

Dwight Howard has had 5 coaches in 15 months.  Think about that.  He ran Stan Van Gunndy out of Orlando.  Mike Brown is back in Cleveland again.

Howard does not deserve nor the benefit of the doubt between him and D'Antoni nor will he be receiving it from anyone.  He is the defintion of a coach killer.

If you had told me 2 years ago Jeremy Lin, James Harden, and Dwight Howard would be Houston Rockets I'm not sure I would've believed you. Those could be 3 very good pieces to a playoff puzzle. It could also be an expensive flop, but time will tell

Dwight seems like one of those guys who thrives more in a secondary market.  He never seemed to like the spotlight and pressure of LA and this decision is not at all surprising.  It is hard to imagine Kobe sticking around much longer to come back to what is quickly becoming an awful Laker roster.

Yes, they'll be 50 mil under the cap, but they'll need to fill an entire roster with that money basically. Resign Kobe for 12 and get one max player for 20 and you're left with 18 million to sign two more starters and a bench. That's not that much, so you have to hope that max player really lives up and that Kobe and Nash stay healthy because the bench will still suck.

I'm glad thats over so i can quit hearing about him all day on Sportscenter.  I doubt he ever wins a title because he doesn't seem to have the mental toughness to lead a team.  And how long until he asks Houston to fire their coach?  1-2 seasons?

The only people that want Howard to stay in Los Angeles are the media and Laker haters. I have not met a single Laker fan in Los Angeles that is older than 10 years old that wants Dwight Howard back in Los Angeles. He is a diva that has seen his best days. Would team be better with him NEXT year than without?...Yes. Would the team compete for a championship?....No. Unload the baby, suck it up next year, and reload in 2014 when everyone is off the books.

I hear you, but the Lakers better make some smart signings in 2014 or they will be on a long stretch of mediocrity. They signed an aged Nash for a while and have up a lot of picks to do so, and if they don't hit it out of the park in the 2014 FA market, they'll be in second round purgatory for the better part of a decade (including the last three years).

Lakers always reload. People forget that the Lakers traded for Chris Paul and Dwight Howard this year. Unfortunately Stern vetoed the deal, Howard was injured the entire year and proved to be a diva and Kobe tore his ACL at end of year. Can't plan for that. Jeannie Buss will slap some sense into Jimmy Buss and Lakers will be just fine in a couple years.

Not sure what team u follow...but I am pretty sure most teams would be happy with 3 bad years (where they still made the playoffs 2 out of the 3 years) bookended by 4 finals appearances (3 championships) in 5 years on one end and 3 finals appearances (2 championships) on the other end. While you say bad...I say this is perfect example of how quickly the Lakers rebuild.

Since Celts lost '86/'87 championship (against the Lakers)...it took them 21 years to get back and they went 1-1 (against the Lakers) in the finals. Since Lakers lost to Bulls in '90/'91, Lakers made it back to finals 9 years later (ok that is almost a decade), but since '99/'00 have been back to finals 7 times winning 5...little different story than Celts journey. Celts have had to rebuild, Lakers have generally reloaded with little spurts of meritocracy in between.

Dwight Howard is my least favorite basketball player of all time. He had a chance to be a free agent but instead he decided to accept the player option and complain about being on the Magic for that year.

I know it's popular and probably a little justified to bash Dwight Howard but make no mistake this is a big blow for the Lakers.  I'm not trying to hand-wave off his underwhelming season with us but he was playing through a back injury all season and so was pretty much the rest of the roster.  A more salient point was that while L.A. was okay defensively while D12 was on the court and even kinda good when he was on, the Lakers were 3rd worst in defensive efficiency when D12 was not on the court.  And let's not forget that there simply isn't any adequate replacement for Howard who isn't locked down by another team.  Even if he came off a down year any conceiveable replacement for him will almost assuredly by a HUGE downgrade from the decent-by-anyone-else's-standards numbers he put in.

...next year. While Howard was a shell of himself this year, he still put up great defensive stats. Without Kobe, Lakers will have no perimeter defense either...so they are going to be pretty gnarly to watch. But Howard is clearly not the physical specimen he used to be in Orlando and has proven he does not have the testicular fortitude or smarts to be the player the Lakers should invest in and build around for the future. Lakers will be 50 million under cap in 2014...I am pretty sure they will reload with talent.

According to Dan Feldman, the Rockets would have a little trouble giving Howard a max contract - HERE. This was written this morning, mind you, but it is an interesting financial exercise.

"Howard’s contract can start at $20,513,178 next season, regardless of which team signs him, and it wouldn’t be difficult for the Rockets to clear that much cap room. Waiving Greg Smith, Patrick Beverley,Tim Ohlbrecht and James Anderson and using the stretch provision on Royce White would do the trick. That seems less than ideal, but if it meant getting Howard, I’m sure Darryl Morey would do it in a heartbeat."

This piece talks about how the almost any deal that Howard ultimately makes with the Rockets means somehow that he takes less money. It mentions that even if the Rockets only waived Ohlbrecht and Anderson, Howard might be sacrificing about 4-5 million dollars over the life of any deal, but by virtue of not signing with the Lakers, it could be a lot more than that even.

...on table by signing with Houston over Lakers because CA has ridiculously high taxes and Texas does not have income tax. Difference is Howard would have had millions more in endorsement deal in Los Angeles than he will have in Houston...which is why a representative from Time Warner Cable also attended the Dwight Howard stay in LA sales pitch.
