OT: Duolingo: A Cool Way to Learn a Language While Translating the Web

Submitted by hart20 on

Duolingo is a pretty cool start-up out of Carnegie Mellon that helps users learn a language for free, while translating web pages in the process. Currently they only have Spanish, German and English for Spanish speakers, but they have French in beta, and Italian and Chinese coming soon.

I've been wanting to learn Spanish for a while now, so I started the Spanish program and I think it's going pretty well so far. On a slow Saturday, I figured that we 're a pretty well-educated bunch and that this would of interest/use to some people. And, hey, maybe you'll eventually get to translate MGoBlog for some non-English speaking kid in Spain.

I think it's awesome, and I'll definitely give it a shot when I start to learn German in the fall at UM. From the same people who created re-captcha, iirc.

Wow, this is real cool.  I've always wanted to learn a language like Itailian, French, or Portugese.  This may be a dumb question to some, but what does "Beta" mean when it says French (Beta)?  Thanks guys.

I listen to a few podcasts en espaneol during my daily commute. Good use of my time and it will probably be spoken more here then English so why not? Thanks for the tip ¡amigo!
