OT: Duke/Ohio Thread
I think that Duke wins by at least 10
Worst state ever and lebron hates ohio shirts spotted in the cameron crazies!
Worst state ever t-shirt sighting
for the challenge title. GT is up on Illinois with the half winding down, BC and PSU is early, as is OSU and Duke.
I'm not exactly sure why we want to win the challenge enough to root for OSU though. Then again, the alternative is Duke. I guess I'd rather just keep my mind off such things.
Did any one else catch the worst state ever shirt in the crowd?
Yes. And LeBron hates Ohio as well. Nice.
maine.
and the Big Ten has the top three ranked teams. Go Ohio!
Then I saw Kraft's goofy face and I remembered I hate them. Go Duke
Gotta say, I didn't know the animosity carried over to basketball so much. I actually actively root for UM basketball, assuming they aren't playing us
It does.
Go Blue!
who to root for
Just noticed that Greg Paulus is on Ohio's bench. He's a video coordinator for them apparently. Interesting
I thought it was strange that he would be grabbing Thomas, but then I realized that he is on the OSU staff.
Sorry double post
Illinois 36 GA Tech 35 at half
If the big ten wins 6 it keeps the trophy right? If so, then we just need 1 of osu, illinois, psu to win. I'll root for penn state.
need 7
so what happens if its 6-6? Who wins/gets the trophy?
that chaos will ensue or probably not
really, who gives a shit if that ends up happening, means the conferences are pretty even from top to bottom, we may have more heavy hitters this year
I don't particularily give a shit...I was just curious.
but I was just being a smart ass, sorry bro
retains trophy
Should be interesting to see Ohio State against quality competition. I'm atleast still a little bit skeptical about them.
know who to effing root for either, man this is a really tough one.
well I guess I'll root for ohio cause the B1G needs it so that people don't say we're an over rated conference and I hate Duke for like ever for some damn reason.
Not impressed by Amir Williams at all, and to think I was upset he didn't go to U-M, whew, I guess Beilein truly is a better talent evaluator than myself and most others reading this.
M & Indiana are 2 best teams in conf. and it reminds me of the 70's & 80's and even early 90's
Think our best bet is Illinois though OSU is acquiting itself well.
On ESPN they keep saying you need seven to win the challenge.
Was really surprised that Virgina beat Wisco in Madison. Usually Wisco is unbeatable there and Virginia did not make it to MSG in the NIT Tip-off.
Also did not except MSU to blow it in Coral Cables.
not have the last place teams in each conf from the previous season be able to play in challenge so that there is no chance of a tie
Ohio D is nasty. Can't bring myself to root for Duke. At the very sight of Plumlee or Kelly I get pissed.
maybe that says more about the teams they beat like Louis, KY, Minn and VCU then anything else.
To be fair this is their fourth games in seven days against some pretty good teams that you named.
but I'm just coming from an eye test standpoint, you know?
That stretch is gonna take a lot out of a team mentally and physically. Duke is just never in the right place and Ohio is just dictating the game completely. The only downside is a lot of fouls on Ohio. Don't know if Duke can make them pay though.
Have a powerball OT open thread.
just saying. 14 17 32 37 59 32
And 01 19 25 56 58 31
win apparently
Those are my numbers.
06 22 35 37 42 57
i predict they will be
4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42
Osu looks better than I expected. I agree with their top 5/10 status. Thomas has been on the bench since the 10 minute mark and they have kept up their lead.
against ohio. they are capitalizing on every questionable duke pass/dribble.
Two observations:
1. Mason Plumlee reminds me of Ivan Drago.
2. Ohio's defense looks awesome.
Conclusions:
1. I can't root for Duke because I can't root for a Communist.
2. Ohio scares me because they look like the long and lean team that will give us fits.
Conversely, shouldn't our offense scare them because we have the perimeter shooting that could give them fits.? It doesn't seem like Duke is comfortably at all shooting from the edge and needs everything to go through their bigs. Ohio is keeping them from penetrating with the gourds and the O collapsed.
I know I'm biased but I think our offense can score on anyone. But, it was a bit disconcerting seeing us struggle against the pressure at the end of the NC State game. Ohio is athletic enough to bring that for the whole game
I'm not gonna lie, Michigan offense looks very good and their is only on Craft. Hardaway and Burke are gonna be deep threats but the key for Michigan is the development of Mitch Mcgary #4. He's got a lot of growing to do but I'll be looking for Michigan's frontcourt development throughout the year. Michigan has a very legit team!
+1 for "penetrating with the gourds". I LoL'd at the visual of being stabbed by a squash.
Yes....stabbed
Can we please, for the love of god, call them Ohio State in basketball? There's an actual quality basketball program named "Ohio" (who, you might remember, we played last year), and it's just really, really stupid in this context.
Imbibe damn you
Can we call them the other Ohio?
Ohio (YTO) and Ohio (NTO)
I think the Bobcats are "THE" Ohio University.
by ohio's D, but does Duke look like they can score like we can? I'm gonna go ahead and say no on that one.
gets to keep Maryland.
If I could vote this up or give you a 5 I would. In that case go Penn State, OSU and Illinois. Make sure we don't get Maryland. Eliminate change and keep the Big Ten the same!
Greedy, hungry Delany. Shame on you!
Sorry Double post!
Can the loser be forced to take Rutgers as well?
while the loser get to keep Maryland! Fair trade.
Kirk Herbie looks like he married his sister, hmm, they chew gum so similarly
This Seth Greenberh looks like a slightly slimmed down Al Borges
OSU looks good, but Duke looks tired. They are lucky to be down only 8.
we beat lower case ohio in C'Bus?
Bobcats are upper case Ohio, remember that whole Brian meme before the NCAA's?
if you say so, I like lower case better for some reason
I wouldn't mind a B1G/ACC win and a top 3 (no order) of Michigan, Indiana, and Matta's team.
Plumlee threw that down with authority. Nasty!
I'm begging for them to come back ands win... I hate Ohio more then I like the Big Ten
Well Duke seems to be waking up
Couldn't believe Jay Bilas was saying Duke was tired. They were just getting outplayed. Now they are playing better, I guess they aren't tired anymore?
I enjoyed that. Typical bilas logic...teams become less tired as the game progresses.
DeShaun Thomas should be earning an NBA paycheck instead of an ohio state paycheck. He's a mismatch against anyone.
this.
Not this game, but wow Illinois can't make a free throw!
Won't matter looks like Big Ten will take at least six games though this could very well end in a tie.
Guess Maryland will belong to both the Big Ten and ACC.
It's better of UM to have the Big Ten teams win... so ohio win is good for us. With that said, F ohio. Then again, F Duke. I just hate everything about this game. I can't watch.
Agree. A big FU to both teams, coaches.
By the way, why is Aaron Craft a preseason B1G 1st-teamer? He's an awful shot. Airballs, bricks, it's like he's inventing new ways to miss
Duke must not be tired anymore, huh?
Also, Louisville woulda been a better get for the B1G cause that gives us more SEC exposure for recruiting and people are moving to the south a lot
Has anyone ever cared about a record for dunks?
Shaq?
Thank got he went to OSU and we got Burke. He doesn't seem to be getting better as a player. I liked him a lot in the past he's single-handedly losing this game for OSU with shitty offense.
Is single handedly blowing this game right now with his missed shots and free throws.
similar post at same time
are you in my house?
Musberger just said Gene Smith is one of the best ADs in the country as they showed him on tv. My head hurts.
Musberger wins prize for stupidest comment of the year. Again.
There was a Brent Musberger Award for the most insanely stupid shit said in sports broadcasting, of the four annual nominees, Brent would take three spots himself and Matt Millen one.
Aaron Craft is such a good leader.
/s
Leaders don't miss two free throws and air ball a floater in the paint.
Burke>Craft
ONE! what a joke. craft lost this game.
I can't wait to play Dukie in the tournament Final Four (while Ohio is home watching like their football team).
w00t! Go Duke, beat Ohio!!
This run over the past couple minutes has been awesome!!
Go Devils Go!!!
I opened this thread after the game just to look for your post.
WOOOOO DUKE!
ACC: 6
B1G: 6
This tie is all on Michigan State and Wisconsin. No one, not even I expected OSU to win against Duke and they played a good game minus Craft ill performance but MSU losing to Miami and Virginia winning in the Kohl Center blows my mind. The B1G is still the cream of the crop!
Ok Michigan fans, salivate in Ohio State defeat for the night...
Agree with this.
you seem like a good guy, tough loss for you guys, played well but Craft killed you there, how concerned are you about his lack of Offense at times and then missing FT's, surprising, that
Also, good call on Sparty & Wiscy, them fools blew it for the B1G, MSU in particular just might be starting to wane under Izzo, they don't play as solid as they used to.
Aaron plays very solid defense any one can admit that but his offensive numbers are not where they need to be. With most of our offense leaving (Buford and Sully) we need him to step up and at least get 12-15 a night and dish the ball well too. Aaron also needs to learn how to take well advised shot and exercise good judgement. Part of his play last year was the reason we lost in the final four to Kansas. I'm just hoping games like this will make him better once Big Ten play starts.
Sidenote: Ohio State needs to find some more scores besides Thomas and Aaron. They can't do it alone. Bummer game but you live and learn.
Thomas should have been taking all the shots down the stretch. Ohio played a very good game, especially on defense, but left the Lumberjack open too many times in the second half.
Any athlete like cook exposes him for what he truly is.
We murder fisted Pitt and NC State? We won both games, but only by 5 and 7 points respectively, Duke probably should be #1 and IU a very close #2 with us at #3.
IU blew out UNC, a pretty good squad by 20+. They had some close games when Zeller was sick, but won them all. Duke was fortunate that Ohio shot about 35% for the game, and Croft played his worst game of the year. I understand the argument that IU has more wins against good teams, but that is an accident of the scheduling, and does anyone who has seen both teams play really think that Duke should be ranked ahead of IU? I firmly do not.
- Duke
- Indiana
- Ohio State
- Michigan
UM is 3 now and OSU 4.
How could OSU cob over us following a loss ?
Duke beat:
#3 Kentucky (Neutral)
#2 Louisville (Neutral)
#4 OSU (Home)
Unranked then, now ranked Minnesota
VCU
That's your number 1 team right there folks.
Duke ain't playing!
I had this thought yesterday while watching this game. I remember McGary having a duke offer yesterday and then was curious about duke's big men that have had similar recruiting profiles to him and how long they have been at duke.
Ryan Kelly was # 20 overall in his class. He is a senior now with his role/minutes increasing steadily after not playing much as a freshman, but he plays the 4 so the style of play comparision may not fit as well.
Mason Plumlee was #55 overall in his class. He is also a senior now with his role/minutes increasing every year, though not as greatly as kelly.
14.1mpg, 46%fg, 3.1rb, 3.7pts
McGary was #30 overall in his class. His minutes so far more closely mirror Plumlee's and he also plays the 5 as plumlee did so I think he is the better comparison.
14.3mpg, 60.9%fg, 5.7rb, 5.5pts
Overall, I just thought it was interesting but the takeaways are that people need to give McGary time...he is only 6 games into his ncaa career and has shown promise. His stats so far compare favorably to a likely 1st round draft pick at the same timepoint in his career. I am very excited by what he has done so far and think he has barely scratched his surface.
