O.T. Driving through Ohio with a vanity plate
I'm heading out tomorrow from Swartz Creek MI to compete in a Half Ironman in Raleigh NC and of course the fastest route is right through Columbus, OH. Of course I have a license plate with the block M on it and VCTRS2 spelled out; what are the chances folks are going to give me crap just driving through the state?
I was thinking to myself, "Oh great, I might find myself in some 'Deliverance' situation and then I realized I'll be driving through 'By God' West Virginia next, lol. So just gas up before I hit the state line?
Columbus isn't Baghdad, you'll be fine.
I can't speak for C-bus, but I have been driving in NE Ohio for over 10 years with a UM vanity plate and a Block M decal in my back window and a Michigan license plate frame, and the only time I was ever pulled over I absolutely deserved it. Perhaps the roads around C-bus during late November are a different story, but I can't imagine you will have any issues.
Yeah actually I've seen a lot of Michigan gear in Columbus, Cleveland and Akron. I'd guess it probably gets dodgy out in the boonies, but I wouldn't think you'd have any trouble in the cities

I leave a Michigan hat on the back part of my car in Ohio. Most people dont care. You may get a hur hur comment from a yokel but that would be about it. You may get a question about Harbaugh, and people may actually be interested in your answer.
I drove through Ohio with Michigan plates a few times when I was going to school in PA and never had any issues. Maybe a few cops are more likely to nab you for speeding, but I don't get why people think they're going to end up dead simply by driving in the state.
You're fine. I live just south of Cleveland and have a Michigan Alumni Association sticker on my car along with a MGoBlue licence plate frame and have never had any problems other than a few "Michigan sucks" drive-by shoutings.
Now if your plates were something like OSUSUCKS then you might have something to worry about it.
I have some stories to this effect. (See my avatar.) Cannot share in long form currently but will come back tomorrow when I can give a proper retelling.

Don't imagine the Ohio BMV would allow it here. Nor would it be wise to select the plate if they did. Although I did go on the website once, and they indicated no problem with OSUCKS.
Maybe I'll just fly some "Go Bucks!" flags or something...
You'll be fine. Plenty of normal people in Ohio who won't be paying any attention.

Enjoy your drive and don't sweat the small stuff. Good luck to you in the Half Ironman competition. Most of the highways are 70 now, btw.
Oh man. I don't know how you will ever make it through the state! You better be careful!!!
In all honesty, it shouldn't be an issue. The horror stories are outliers.

It's not like you're wearing a Tony Romo Jersey walking around Philly. A women did that while I lived in Philly and she got beat up.
The fans that booed Santa Claus!
No one cares.. I live in Cleveland and always have stuff on, including a flag at my house and it's not a big deal.
Won't bear any resemblance to Deliverance, unless somehow you end up driving into the Cuyahoga.
Might be more similar to this:
It is not that bad, at least recently. Sad to say, but OSU fans are not as crazy obsessed as they used to be and we have ourselves to blame for that. Had we won more against them in the past FIFTEEN years, then they might take us a tad more seriously.
So after winning a NC, they have all just relaxed and calmed down and take a more holistic view of things.
I know you got drilled for this, but the anger and crazy from the '90s just isn't there anymore. Especially among current students. If you were at the game this year, you'd have thought we were playing Iowa. Really docile event.
I mean, we beat them ALL the time in the 90's, and mostly when we had no business beating them. I'm sure it was maddening.
Great rivalries are forged by and built on games that matter. We haven't been able to provide that in a long time.
Like I tell friends of mine who are Packers or Bears fans, explaining why I don't hate their teams: "Lions fans don't hate anyone. We just feel bad for ourselves..."
Do not speed
"Deliverance" took place in Georgia, not West Virginia.
But it still featured Buckeye fans.
My apologies, West Virginians! Cool, that about takes care of all my worries. No, not all of them; I don't want to jinx myself...
OSU fans are more
Concerned with MSU now anyway, least that's what I hear.

Good. Many M fans said the same thing in the 90s and look what happened. Two wins this entire century against OSU. That is called karma. Hopefully that is what OSU will get now that we have Jim and his staff.
You may get someone joking with you but it's not a big deal.
You'll be fine. I live in Columbus and it's really not a big deal. Just don't give cops a reason to pull you over by speeding.

Good news. You will be out of the state before they figure it out.
just to tell you to keep it below 70 especially if you drive a black Cadillac CTS-V. I am the proud owner of the plate VCTRS and will be in Cbus next week. Don't need them looking for me! Good luck.
No offense, but, really? Chances are you get a honk or two, or maybe someone agitated enough by a vanity plate flips you off. But I sincerely ask, do you care? FWIW, I've driven through Ohio a bunch and have found it to be no different than any other state outside of the strict speed enforcement (which I'd like to blame on UM plates but really it's just an out of state car that was, you know, actually speeding). PA is just as bad as Ohio on highway speed monitoring in my experience, though. Who knows? Maybe I've just been lucky.

it's just that I'll have the missus with me in the car. I'm sure I'm fretting over nothing but I don't want HER to experience any shenanigans. Because she's liable to flip them off and if she's also the one at the wheel, oh dear...
Both times on US 23
Both times near Delaware
One of the worst speed traps got a bit better as they extended the 65 MPH further south recently. For thoses who have driven the route, you'll recognize the spot - it's where they have "test pavement" for a couple of miles just south of state route 229, with the highway normally routed on two roadways in the middle, but with the option to route either north or south traffic on extra roadways on the outside edges. Used to be cops sitting there all the time right after the reduced speed limit on the southbound side.
Nobody gives a shit about your license plate loser. You fucking psycho fans who think people in Ohio are looking to destroy Michigan fans stuff need some serious help.
Wow...

on that prescription??
With the way our asses have been handed to us the last decade. No one will give you a second glance
Apologies - my comment below wasn't directed at you, but at a delusionally angry comment by TheSacko221. His comment shows on my iPhone but not my PC. Same goes for comments from others below.
Once I signed onto my PC and checked back in it looked like I and others were responding to you; we weren't.
I have a block m and an alumni frame on my license plate. Have driven through Ohio countless times, only time I've been flipped off is driving through Columbus by three dudes in osu jerseys in a convertible. They were laughing, it was kinda funny. You won't have a problem.
There's pretty much zero chance that anybody says a single word to you. Nobody's going to give a shit.
I mean just a few months ago I stood in front of the 'Shoe in all maize and blue and took a picture. Not to mention I made a block M sign and the worst I got was a few bad looks. I would say you'll be fine. My vehicle is covered in Michigan stuff.
Their fans were a lot worse when we were dominating them every year. Now they don't really say much. The drive will be a much more dangerous one in a few years. After Harbaugh has his way with Meyer for a couple of years, you may need to find a new route.
That's a good point...
