OT- Drivers License
Everytime I hear of an athlete getting popped for DUI or drugs I have no reaction now, I've become numb to it. What I do wait for is the next sentence. There it is.....he's driving on a suspended license. Bingo.
Does anyone have a clue on what is going on here? Are athletes afraid of the DMV? Do they not open mail? Doesn't anyone need a valid license to use as ID? I just find this insane. I would think teams and universities at this point would just assign an assistant to make sure everyone has all their paperwork filled out and their bills paid. I imagine when the basketball team went to Europe they did not trust all the kids were going to get their passports ready by themselves.
If anyone has any insight on this culture that could explain this behavior I'd really appreciate the info.
It's a part of a culture that the kids are a part of... if that makes sense. Where a lot of them come from getting your license suspended is no big deal and even normal so it continues.
Post Down-Vote Edit:
And I feel I can say that because I'm from the culture that a lot of these kids are from. I can't speak to why those in other cultures drive on suspended license but as for young black athletes it is just a part of the culture to "ride dirty" not considered a big deal. You feel the police are after you for DWB either way.
You seem to be confusing "suspended" with "expired". A license is suspended as a result of violations, not because somebody forgot to go to the DMV.
When you get a DUI your license is suspended for a minimum of 6 months. This can't be solved by going to the DMV. Now imagine having to find someone to drive you everywhere you need to go for six months, yet you have a perfectly good car sitting outside. A lot of people would opt to hop in that car and hope they don't get pulled over. This is why you see so many driving with a suspended license charges closely following a DUI conviction. However, a decent lawyer should be able to get you limited driving privileges during the six month period.
Not that a defense attorney specializing in vehicular infractions is going to be the most accurate source, but this lawyer in Chicago claims 25,000 people in the Chicagoland area are ticketed or arrested for driving on a suspended license each year. I don't think it has anything to do with any kind of "culture" around athletes, any more than all the other people cited each year.
My lawn, and whatnot...
18-21 year old kids and laws are stupid.
you don't need a license to drive, just a case of beer and the hope that you ruin your life forever.
The thing I don't understand is that the cost of a hired driver should be minimal compared to the money you lose after getting arrested for driving on a suspended license. This should be a no-brainer for every pro athlete.
Key words! While I hate the stereotypical "dumb jock" that is plenty of evidence lately to support it. Do you think this eliminates Kilpatrick and Jenkins from Lions draft considerations or are they going to change there name to the "pot smokers".
RT Airfare from Flint on Delta with one stop each way $325, suite at the Holiday Inn on Wet n Wild Way (apparently closest hotel to Jerry World?) for $135 and game ticket for $175. I'm sharing the hotel room with friends so I'll be in for about $550 plus cab fares and beer money. I booked air fare and hotel right after New Year's. Can hardly wait!
Wrong thread dude.
Maybe his point is that he's paying $550 for designated drivers to get him to and around Dallas so he/she can spend his/her entire weekend drunk off his a$$ without worrying about those pesky DUI costs and eventual suspended license.
Or maybe not.
