OT - DPS responds to reports that students brought strippers into Markley
Reported by The Michigan Daily.
Excerpt:
Though Mary Markley Residence Hall is known for wild freshman behavior, some residents took it to another level on Friday night when they hired strippers for a friend’s birthday party.
LSA freshman Nick Bidwell said he was part of a group that met the strippers at the front door of Markley, and then led them to their friend’s room in Little Hall on the second floor of the residence. The group then progressed to the floor study lounge and a quad on the floor before returning to the original room.
University Housing spokesman Peter Logan said a housing security officer and the floor’s resident advisor were approached earlier that night by the resident whose birthday it was, who informed them that he was “expecting strippers for a show.”

Don't know why the students felt the need to publicly comment on it. I think it's all pretty funny, but I wouldn't want my name in a newspaper story about strippers.

...with a ten foot "pole."

Freshmen year in Markley. The good old days......
This is not surprising in the least.

My freshman year the guys on 1st Little built a makeshift stripper pole in their room. They never had any professionals dance there, but claim to have had several "amateurs" (drunken freshmen).

1st little, 1990-91 freshman year. We trashed it so bad the cleaning people actually stopped coming around for bathroom cleanings for about a month. We had to steal toilet paper from other floors.

just curious . . . you bragging about that?
February 2nd, 2010 at 10:31 AM ^
I lived in Markley Freshman year but because I didn't turn in my housing forms on time (oops!) they ended up putting me in a lounge converted into a triple. It was huge and awesome, we had so much room.
I'm in the "I lived in Markley Freshman year so I know how sweet it is not to live there anymore" group on Facebook. Markley was always exciting, but it always, always smelled like vomit.

Not a weekend passed where someone didn't puke in the toilets. I felt bad for the cleaning staff.

I applied to U of M late in my senior season. I was actually pretty happy with the placement since I was sure I was going to end up in Bursley. And as it turned out, I still keep in touch with a couple of guys from my hall 17 years later.
February 2nd, 2010 at 11:37 AM ^
In the 4th and El... we had our lounge converted into a triple which coincidentally housed one Ricky Reyes. All year he talked about how he was working out like crazy to walk on to the football team. No one believed him since their triple was the home to several kegs throughout the year... (halloween, super bowl, st. pattys day... etc.).

Hall progressives ---> people passing out in the hall and in the stalls.
Five foot bong hits in the hall.
RA and MPA just turned the other cheek.

why am i living off campus?
February 2nd, 2010 at 9:44 AM ^
When the strippers come over, it isn't in the frickin' newspaper, duh. Much to learn...much to learn.
February 2nd, 2010 at 9:06 AM ^
Young mister Bidwell should have said that he had some "friends" visiting from East Lansing.
February 2nd, 2010 at 9:09 AM ^
Probably the most exciting Markley ever gets. I give 'em credit.
February 2nd, 2010 at 9:15 AM ^
Clearly, I was not intelligent enough to consider strippers while at Markley...oh well, missed opportunities.

Nice work Michigan students!!!
Didnt know you had it in you! But, a long way to go before you get the mantle of top party school in the league. Keep building, though, keep building.

good for them.

is just finally catching up with South Quad.
February 2nd, 2010 at 10:01 AM ^
South Quad is the least wild- too many non frosh.
February 2nd, 2010 at 10:11 AM ^
Aaron Shea almost burned down the SQuad about twelve years ago. You'd think an RA would have noticed that, in a "substance-free" dorm, someone had two kegs in a wading pool filled with ice. Good times.
February 2nd, 2010 at 11:04 AM ^
Agreed - South Quad is relatively lame. I lived on the honors hall and the only people who were cool were the girls on the floor above. I had the delight of living w/ a random sophomore. Who roomed blind with a freshman. Needless to say, we didn't have a ton in common...
February 2nd, 2010 at 12:52 PM ^
The older people in SQuad were great by my standards, an excellent source of booze. Our RA used to go out on Friday and we'd have hall parties when it was too cold to be worth walking to a frat party.
The one time our RA did come home early, he just walked in, looked around and said "I'm going over to the Union, I'll be back in 30 minutes, have this cleaned up."

Bite it...

I've always had a thing for the erotic arts. I frequent strip clubs often enough that one would think I could find a high class stripper. While my friends enjoy strippers named Porsche & Mercedes -- I end up with Pinto & Sundance. Cherry & Peaches for them -- Bananas & Apricot for me. My friend gets a lap dance from Sapphire, named after a precious stone -- my dancer's name is Rosetta Stone? I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but I'm starting to wonder if the 20 bucks a week is worth it.

Trim that 'stache.

West Quad was the most wild; 5th Williams, sophomore year baby. Connected to 5th Michigan, hands down the 2 most wild halls on campus. We ruled those halls; with no elevator to get to top floor, DPS was too lazy to come all the way up there. Helped that RAs had turned 21 that year and were at bars 24/7, leaving us to fend for ourselves. Good times...
February 2nd, 2010 at 10:29 AM ^
So, where exactly are these bars that are open 24/7 you speak of?
February 2nd, 2010 at 11:24 AM ^
5th Michigan was legendary. Also one of the strongest IM sports halls on campus.
February 2nd, 2010 at 12:28 PM ^
As a 2006-2007 member of 5th Michigan, and 2007-2008 member of 5th Williams, I gotta say its one of the best places to be dormed up on campus. The fact that we were alone up top, with access to the roof (I put an HD antenna on the roof of West Quad to pull down local HD), and the fact that it was coed by room rather than by hall....
ohh good times.
February 2nd, 2010 at 12:36 PM ^
6th floor Couzens circa 2002-2003.
floor was detached from the rest of the building, that only went to 5. Night RAs would never go up the stairs or take the elevator to check on what amounted to 20 rooms.
insanity ensued.

Living in 5 Willy my Freshman year was a pretty great situation, considering the Sophs wanted to party, and knew where to go besides frat houses to do so.
Co-ed hallways are the way to go for great stories and experiences, even if everybody wanted out of there by April, for obvious reasons.
February 2nd, 2010 at 10:25 AM ^
what it appears. I am sure it was an arranged directed study.
February 2nd, 2010 at 10:30 AM ^
My freshman year in Markley these two girls in nothing but underwear ran down my 3rd Frost hall and pulled the fire alarm.
February 2nd, 2010 at 4:34 PM ^
2* story brah.
February 2nd, 2010 at 10:31 AM ^
I can testify that there were plenty of hookers brought into the dorm. But strippers? Tasteless.
February 2nd, 2010 at 10:40 AM ^
stripper all loudly proclaim what classless losers Sparties and Buckeyes are because they party so much.
February 2nd, 2010 at 10:51 AM ^
I lived in 2nd Little during the '02-'03 year. And these frosh were much more crazy than some of the prudes living in that hall.
I was the beer baron (only one with a fake) and made maybe 4 runs the entire year for the hall.
The hall was also a co-ed hall and had all the potential in the world of being great. Instead I gave it a C-.
Moving off campus for the 2nd year was definitely the right choice.
February 2nd, 2010 at 12:38 PM ^
Residence Halls are a mixed bag. I lived on 4th Reeves during the same time as you.
I'd say it broke down a little like this:
1/3rd Frat
1/3rd Chill dudes who just didn't party much
1/3rd Sophomores / Freshmen on suicide watch
Typically the frat clashed with the sophomores/at risk frosh, which led to I believe 5 "special meetings" during the second semester with our RA. No meetings happened during the first semester.
Some of the rowdiest stuff I witnessed was a kid's door being pissed on (while unlocked and partially open), a kid passed out in our stall that had chocolate milk and other items tossed on him, and having a third of our hall get caught smoking weed by our RA.
February 2nd, 2010 at 12:40 PM ^
Forgot to mention my roommate was an odd bird. Definitely one of the freshmen on suicide watch.
I was not the most experienced "user" at the time and I failed to ever dip my hands into his seemingly endless supply of anti-depressants. Looking back on that now, that is most definitely epic fail for me.
Not to say that other kids down the hall wouldn't sneak one now and again.

Was the crystal egg still there when they left?
February 2nd, 2010 at 12:34 PM ^
is i discovered my room key opened a smaller, isolated bathroom with two showers, three toilets, etc. on the bottom floor of where they were housing us over the summer. nobody else knew about it and it made everything better.
i felt like george costanza.
February 2nd, 2010 at 1:09 PM ^
I was part of the 5th VanTyne kegger. Both of the RAs were gone on MLK weekend so we snuck it up the stairs and put it in one of the shower stalls. It was EPICC

Channel 4 news is currently outside Markley trying to interview Markley residents about wha they think. Honestly, do they not have any better stories?
February 2nd, 2010 at 4:15 PM ^
Maybe it's the old lady in me, but this story made me cringe. The potential for the public and media to dredge up Duke-LAX-levels of hysteria over student misbehavior makes my blood run cold.
Plus, I thought U-M students had more sense than that--those strippers are a rip-off. Ol' Tits LaRue may claim she'll dance for four songs, but the tunes are just snippets that last about 45 seconds. Which will be reminiscent of piped in stadium music, no less. All this to say, this kind of flawed cost-benefit analysis will not look good on their Ross applications next year.
February 2nd, 2010 at 11:32 PM ^
...but who the hell can count seconds in a song while a woman is rubbing her naughty bits in your face and you're piss-drunk?
February 2nd, 2010 at 4:48 PM ^
right now. There are quite a few douche bags in my hall, but most of them are OK. I'm not in my room very often anyways. Still annoying enough that I'm living off campus next year...
