OT: Dombrowski text to Beane at deadline
You have 1 minute to acquire Chris Sale
i both hope and don't hope he's the next commish.

Dombrowski pulling off that trade was impressive, but trolling Beane is even better.
I agree with your sentiments regarding him being the next commissioner. I think DD would do a great job, but I'd like to see him in the Tigers' front office at least as long as Mike Ilitch and family are running the team.
I would prefer Lester and Samardzija over Price and Soria. Especially considering the D is going to get even worse with Jackson gone and the move for Price pretty much guarantees Max is gone.
John Mozeliak says hi.
Doug Fister trade says hi.
tell doug fister trade i say hi back and that price is better than fister,
The Tigers and A's have been hoarding all the good pitchers and constantly one-upping each other.
and he literally sent it 1 minute before the deadline, right after acquiring david price
Playoffs: Dombrowski 2 - Beane 0
Hopefully the Tigers continue that trend
I believe you are forgetting 2006. Make that 3-0
i don't know that he's having THAT good of a year...

He said "better get Chris Sale in a minute" because there was around a minute left in the deadline and he matched Beane's move for Leter. Basically saying he had a minute left to one up him.

That's pretty funny, and I wonder if Beane said anything in return. Probably not, but I can envision a pretty hilarious exchange between the two of these guys.
I will share the sentiments of the OP as well - the body of work for Dave Dombrowski here in Detroit is perhaps better than any of us could have thought when he was hired initially, and I definitely would rather see that continue. On the other hand, of all the GMs out there (assuming that's the majority of the candidate pool for Selig's replacement), he's also one of the better options.
i also had just perused a few grantland articles about dombrowski where (i think it was jonah keri) they go through every trade he's made and compare results.
it also reminded me of the carlos guillen trade in which dombrowski got guillen for ramon santiago and a minor leaguer that didn't pan out, and then picked up santiago 2 years later off waivers for nothing. both players were mediocre to poor for seattle, both players were good to very good for detroit. that one takes the cake for me...
Obviously Dombrowski was joking around, but I not sure the entire A's farm system would be enough for the White Sox to trade Sale given his performance and contract.
This baseball season has been way too fund for me. Love DD and Beane going at it a bit.
Rob Manfred, COO of Baseball under Selig, is said to be "heavily favored" to be the next commissioner of baseball.
Ownership won't support a commish from outside their ranks or the central executive conclave. Fay Vincent titled his autobiography "The Last Commisioner" and he was right.

i had heard dd was next and that he was the most respected gm in the game. then i heard ken rosenthal (i think) break it down and he barely discussed dd.
good for us, hopefully he's trapped here forever.
also, if you read moneyball, dd always appears as a trading partner for beane. they probably have a pretty good relationship/rivalry. just another reason being a baseball gm would be pretty damn cool job.
but getting teams to the playoffs over and over (7 out of 17 years since he took over in 97) again with a budget of 1/3 to 1/4 of the biggest spending teams in baseball is just astounding. IMO, Beane is the best GM I've ever seen. And that's largely because not only the disparity in cash, but the fact that he's done it without hitting it big on a particular guy or couple of guys and riding them for a decade (Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz).
Don't get me wrong, Dombrowski has been a superb GM. No way to argue against that. But long term, I think Beane's accomplishment is almost beyond belief.
Rob
PS - To be fair, in that 17 year period they did go 5 years (07-11) with 81-81 being their best record. Which shows Beane is far from perfect, but also says "Dang" just a bit more about the other 12 years.
Totally fair assesment, I think what Beane has done has been outstanding given the parameters that he has to work within. I only question the fact that while at the helm his teams have only managed to win 1 measly playoff series. Now I know that's a bit unfair but his teams have managed to crumble to some less than stellar teams in the postseason.
Out of curiousity, other then maybe the Minnesota Twins, who are the less than stellar teams they've lost to in the postseason?
That 2002 Minnesota team wasn't all that great, and too be fair neither were our 2006 Tigers.

if not for several costly errors and other mistakes by the Tigers pitchers, that 2006 team could have been World Champions.
I still feel, though, that the 2006 Tigers gave me one of, if not THE most rewarding seasons ever. It was so, SO very improbable that they would even contend that season, let alone be in the World Series. We've had 8 seasons of relative prosperity now in Detroit, but it had been well over 20 seasons since the Tigers had contended until that fantastic '06 season.
I like that the Tigers are in "win now!" mode. Sure wish we had a trustworthy bullpen.
And that text from Dombrowski to Beane? Pretty funny, but I'm sure it was mostly Dombrowski's way of telling Beane that he's "in it to win it" too!

remember when the tigers wished they had players good enough for other teams to buy at the deadline?
While this is a great trade for the Tigers, it makes the Doug Fister trade look even worse in retrospect.
