OT: Does the B10 get 2 teams in the BCS?

Submitted by rbgoblue on

Not entirely OT because it could drastically affect Michigan's bowl slotting.

Assuming the 10 BCS slots, 7 are currently filled by

Pac 10: Oregon (1)
SEC: Auburn (2)
Non-BCS: TCU (3)
Big 10: Wisconsin (7)
Big 12: Oklahoma St (9)
ACC: Virginia Tech (16)
Big East: Pittsburgh (NR)

That leaves 3 spots open with the viable contenders being:

Boise State (4)
LSU (5)
Stanford (6)
Ohio State (8)
Michigan State (10)

What are the chances that the Big 10 gets the snub sending Boise, LSU, and Stanford to BCS bowls leaving OSU to the Capital One Bowl and MSU to the Outback?

Big Ten teams have large fanbases and their games generally mean good attendance and TV ratings.  Wisconsin and OSU will almost certainly be our two representatives.  MSU doesn't have the same national appeal.

If we beat OSU this coming weekend it will actually increase the chances of the Big Ten getting two BCS teams.

Unfortunately, it would send MSU to the Rose Bowl (assuming they and Wiscy win next weekend), but with Wisconsin being ranked so high in the BCS I have to feel that they have a great shot of getting in over Boise/TCU and Stanford.

As if we needed another reason to want a win over OSU.

EDIT: On second thought, OSU is ranked right behind Wisconsin in the BCS, so either way there is a good chance of two teams getting in. I still have a hard time seeing LSU, Stanford, and Boise/TCU getting in over an 11 win BT team.

EDIT II: A random thought: With the PAC10 looking like they might only have 3! bowl eligible teams, could you imagine if Stanford did get into the BCS. That would leave several PAC10 bowls slots empty and could result in some interesting matchups.

Doesn't he have Okie State listed as the Big 12 champion?

I think he is predicting them to beat OU this weekend and Nebraska in the title game. That would mean no chance of a second teams from that conference.

If OU beats Okie State and goes on to the title, then every Big 12 team has 2 losses or more. So again, they would have no chance of getting a second team into the BCS.

It will all depend on how far OSU falls after losing to UM this weekend and if MSU finds a way to pull off the game in Happy Valley.  I'm thinking they'll lose, so Wiscy will make it to the RB and maybe OSU can still take a crack at it if a couple of teams ahead of them also lose.  Should be interesting.
