OT: Do the Pistons make a move before the trade deadline?

Detroit is in desperate need of a big guy who scores down low. Charlie V is an outside shooter and inconsistent at times, and Maxiell bringing nothing much of an offensive presence to the team.

Jonas has been tremendous taking over Princes spot and even out playing him when both play. Daye was coming along nicely and seemed to be getting better everyday offensively and now has seen his time diminished severely since Princes return. So is Prince the odd man out?

Prince has been pretty bad the last couple of years with his lack of defense when guarding scorers and his in ability to be a scorer. Seems like he should be the guy who gets traded.

So the question is, do we trade prince for a big guy along with a first round pick and possibly Will the Thrill (which i really hope not because he is a terrific guard for us). I hear Rudy Gays name being thrown around along with Amare. Gay wouldnt make sense so that would be a bad trade. Amare on the other hand is a type of guy we need.

Any opinions?

Yes

To Las Vegas

More Serious: Trade whoever you can, lose the rest of your games on purpose, pray to win the draft lottery, pray that you can con some foolish free agent to move to the lovely state of Michigan, rebuild the whole franchise.

Rip and Prince are fucking terrible.

Not nearly as cynical as you...

...but I do think the Pistons should tank the rest of the season and give Joe a chance to atone for the Darko Debacle. I am still firmly convinced that if Joe had drafted 'Melo, who was the consensus second pick that year, he would have gotten them over the top against SA the next year, and they might have even snuck out a third NBA Championship for that decade.

Joe has done a great job in Detroit except for two crucial mistakes: the Darko Debacle and Flip Squanders. I would love to see him have a chance to take a franchise player in the draft. With the addition of one franchise player in the draft, one good FA pickup, and one good trade, the Pistons could be right back in it as soon as next season.

And Joe would once again be hailed as one of the best executives in the game.

"...'Melo, who was the consensus second pick that year..."

We must be thinking of different 2003s.

Key word is "expected"

The only reason he was expected to be the number 2 pick is that everyone knew the Pistons had Tay and were in need of a big man. He was not the number 2 rated player, in terms of talent, goming into that draft.

He sure was

The SI article above is a good example of how high everybody was on him, but there were many other examples. Chad Ford, for example, wrote numerous articles on how just about every front office in the league was going to take Darko with the second pick, and some were even thinking about taking him over Bron with the first. Say what you will about his skills as an analyst, the man is and was definitely connected with a lot of GMs and scouts.

You will also notice that the tag line in the SI article is March 3, 2003, well before lottery balls were drawn - nobody knew the Pistons would have the second pick yet.

It was also before Melo and

It was also before Melo and DWade carved up the NCAA tournament.

The real question is; when will GMs learn to stop drafting European big men? There is only one Dirk Nowitzki. 99.9% of euro bigs are epic failures.

Agree on the second paragraph to an extent

Obviously, in hind sight, everybody was way, way too high on Darko, and there were other Euros being overestimated around that same time (Tskitishvili, Frederic "Nuts on my Face" Weis, e.g.). But there are a lot of big guys in general who don't pan out, and there are a number of quality Euro bigs in the game: the Gasol brothers, Scola (if you consider Argentina ball to be basically Euro), Big Z, maybe Gallinari, and a bunch of other solid big man role players.

Don't care...

This team is jacked up and way too inconsistent to be fixed with one trade. Amare would be a great guy to pick up, so if they are going to trade for anyone, I would hope it is for him. Other than that, I don't think they should try too hard to pick anybody up. Maybe we can just wait until the draft to pick up a solid young guy.

Yes. They have to or they are

Yes.

They have to or they are dead in the water.

Emeka Okafor and Carlos Boozer look to be two of the best options. I'd prefer Okafor, just because Boozer is a huge douchebag. The Hornets are looking to trade away all of their assets for expiring contracts because they are in dire shape financially (Although unlikely, there is a very rea possibility they could fold). So we might be able to get him on the cheap and save Rip and Tay for another deal.

Bottom line, they have 319546 guards (Gordon, Bynum, Rip, Stuckey) and 4855685 forwards (Tay, Jerebko, Daye, Maxiel, Summers, Villanueva) and it's just a cluster fuck of players with extremely contrasting styles, and not enough minutes to go around.

A very poorly constructed team right now. Joe D needs to make a move asap.

Don't be surprised

if Rip or Tay is moved.

I think Joe D is against a plain ol' salary dump, but IME those 2, while I'll always have fond memories, are not part of the team's future.

We are not going to be in the playoffs, so that means we have a shot at John Wall.

Bleh

As a grammar snob, I must say that I disapprove of the trend of asking questions about the future in the present tense.

That said, yeah, they probably should make a move.

At this point, the Pistons

At this point, the Pistons are nowhere near a one-trade fix situation. This team needs a major overhaul. I think trading Prince is a necessity. If a contending team is willing to take on Rip's contract, then by all means ship him out too. Dump some salary, give the rooks playing time, and if you happen to lose, so be it. Get a lottery pick then.

Seriously, what the fuck was Joe D thinking giving Rip that contract? Who wants to be paying Rip 11 mil a year 3 or 4 years from now?

You may have a taker...

You may have a taker for Piston's contracts next year. Only a couple teams will win big in the 2010 FA market and the rest "should" have cap space. The big thing between now and then is both Rip and Prince staying healthy.

Detroit needs to grab a big in this draft and figure out their guard situation.

Will be hard to move Prince

because he has not been healthy and when healthy has not been playing well. Their best option is to trade Hamilton because he is the player with the most value.

I heartily concur

The tempo at which the 'Stones need to play leaves Tay out of the mix. Rip can play at that tempo but he requires many more touches than the average bear.

4 shooting guards

This team is in shambles. They don't have a true point guard, stuckey is a 2 guard at best. Have to dump Rip and Tay sometime during the season. Hoping we don't make the playoffs so we can get a lottery pick, I do like what I see from Jonas and Austin Daye though, could be decent bench assets in the future.

I say play the young'uns and

I say play the young'uns and move Prince at least (Rip might be too hard)...making the playoffs would not be positive for a team such as the Stones since they're going nowhere anyways.

John Wall sweepstakes!!

Even Aminu and Favors are VERY intriguing.

Miss the playoff

and hope that the Pistons strike gold at the lottery for the rights to get John Wall at #1 overall. John Wall is the real deal and is a better player than Derrick Rose at the same stage.

Who's gonna trade for either guy?

Which contender needs a posession-eating shooting guard or a declining small forward? The only one I could really see is Rip for Boozer. But a Charlie/Boozer/Jerebko front line is still too small. They're screwed until Gordon and Charlie V are gone; those guys are great 6th/7th men making top-tier money.

exactly

I think it's clear that either of those guys could be assets to a top team - they can play tough D, hit from almost all spots, and move the ball. but this isn't baseball - no one is able to pay $10M-plus for that kind of complementary player. and none of the major contenders right now happen to be short on swingmen - except for the cavs, if Joe D could REALLY swallow his pride.
