OT: DISH Network Commercial Eerily Similar to Victors Commercial

Submitted by The Harbaughnger on

I cannot be the only one who thinks this is a blatant rip-off of The Victors commercial for the U of M:

(I suck at embedding...any help is appreciated....)

EDIT: I'm the only one.  I could see some DISH employee basically using this as a template...

I've seen that a gazillion times and still choke up.

Anyway, I think the OP is correct in hearing similarities in the music, but to my untrained ear a lot of music played on the..... on the.... xylophone?  Hammer dulcimer?  Marimba?  Whatever that thing is...sounds similar.   Without there being any "ripping off" involved.

I remember hearing this commercial one day and turning to the T.V. and saying "Michigan commercial?", wanting to rub Michigan in my OSU-leaning father.  Turns out it was this commercial.  Glad I'm not the only one who noticed the similarities.

I don't think having some sort of whimsical xylophone music even makes it a rip off of the xylophone rendition of the Victors, let alone a blatant rip-off of the entire commercial. Maybe it's just me.

The UM commercial had all sorts of examples of miracles of modern medicine. The dish commercial had one persons leg in a cast. I would say that is a huge similarity. Or you could think about how much work goes on on a daily basis at UM and how hard all of those people were working as they sat on their ass watching  tv and playing footsie. Wow that was eerily similar.

On a related note, I cancelled my Dish Network subscription this very evening. I did not really have any problem with them, but they were unwilling to make any price concessions to me even though my 2 year contract was up, and the Direct TV offer was pretty good (if only for a year).  Plus, they do not currently offer FSN Detroit.  Instead, they have their CEO on what was formerly their FSN Detroit station railing against FSN as a big media company (that is pretty rich coming from the CEO of a company that bought a town so that they could change the name of it to Dish) that is trying to rip-off consumers, and hearkens back to a day when televised sports were free.  I mean Fox is probably most definitely trying to rip us off, but so is Dish.  The self-righteousness of their CEO was a bit much.  Plus, FSN Detroit carries the Rich Rod show, as well as Pistons and Wings games.  Dish Loses!

The DISH commercial misses the grab-the-heartstrings-and-don't-let-go violin solo at the end of our commercial.

Yet it's definitely close enough to say...
