OT - Director Tony Scott commits suicide

IMO, Crimson Tide and Man on Fire, both starring Denzel. So unfortunate.

4 of my favorites.

Never thought I'd see a favorites list that included Days of Thunder and True Romance. But on the latter at least, I'm with you. A must see for 90's comic book nerds and set the stage for a lot of the glam/stylized violence movies that followed it.

With all due respect to the newly deceased, that movie is not very good.

everytime I watch it. I didn't realize I was talking to the Academy.
(And yes, before anyone even says it, I know it was released in 1990, but that means it was filmed in the 80's)

Is one of the greatest movie of all time... Great director..This is sad

Sad news.....we will never have another great Slo-mo, Homo-erotic, Soft-core porn vollyball scene

I HATE this movie. Nothing is factually correct; except for the gay scene maybe.

Did someone really downvote this? Heartless Bastards!
I always thought Enemy of the State with Will Smith and Gene Hackman was underrated. It's a little dated now, but it really made you think about Big Brother and government survelliance.

Hi, I read the front page of Yahoo/CNN/Gawker etc. but I still thought this needed to be shared here.
In other news they are doing a terrible job casting the Hunger Games movies even though the books were a rather good read and i'm sure insert: random celeb flashed some nipple/beaver somewhere.
(unlike other OT topics that at least lend themselves to a good discussion this one will delve into: I liked Top Gun or Tom Cruise=Scientology)

you very much.

Aside from the films that have already been mentioned, I believe Tony Scott also worked with his brother as the executive producer of "Numbers", at least for the last few seasons, as well as "The Good Wife".
An interesting note about "Man On Fire" - it was almost the second film that Tony Scott Scott directed (he had wanted to turn the book into a film since the 80s), but at the time, few people thought that he was experienced enough given the performance at the box office of the later-cult classic "The Hunger". The 2004 version was a great movie (Scott's version), I thought.
I always saw Tony Scott as typically overlooked by critics and rather underrated. Very bummed to hear this.

I loved the Hunger. Bowie, Sarandon and Deneuve. It is certainly a classic, except for the last scene with the screaming Isis/vampire thing, seemed a little too camp for me.
In all of these things, you just have to hope the family is dealing with it well.

Loved Spy Game. Very sad to hear this.
August 20th, 2012 at 10:07 AM ^
My prayers go out to him and his family.

He worked a lot with Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson...two producers that embodied everything that I hate about Hollywood movies.
I liked Crimson Tide. True Romance maintained enough of Tarantino's script to be entertaining.
Still...sorry to hear of his passing.

One of my favorite scenes ever. RIP Tony.

So sad...
I never put 2-and-2 together that he and Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, American Gangster and Prometheus) were brothers. Between the two of them, some AMAZING films.
With that said, this is terrible news. Tony Scott was absolutely brilliant...he had awesome chemistry with my favorite actor of all-time, Denzel. Man on Fire is an all-time classic. Enemy of the State is grossly underrated.
Sad, sad, news. As a movie lover, I've always enjoyed Tony Scott's work, he'll be missed. May he truly rest in peace.

Especially the intro, with Eddie Murphy driving through the streets of Detroit in a Ferrari while Bob Seger rocks out.

According to IMDb, he was set to direct a sequel to Top Gun with Tom Cruise rumored to reprise the Maverick role.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:08 AM ^
Tom Cruise can't get a movie to make money at the box office that doesn't include "Mission Impossible" in the title.

The Last Samurai? War of the Worlds?
August 20th, 2012 at 12:24 PM ^
...since his breakdown, which, basically, coincided with War of the Worlds.

"Directed by Steven Spielberg" I'm not necessarily giving the star of the movie first credit for the box office.

The Vincent Thomas is a suspension bridge in Long Beach area.
Given the traffic on the 110/710 artery, if someone parked on this bridge, scaled the 10 foot protection fence and then jumpedinto the water means that several person would have witnessed this event, not to mention doc workers and boats below. Horrible.

Here's a guy on the face of things that is not only a 1%er in money, but in success in his respective industry. And it seems he still has family, and everything going for him. He's not even washed up in the industry, "stuck" retired on his millions. But in his minds things were so bad taking a long dive off a high bridge seemed like the only solution to his problems. You just really never know.
August 20th, 2012 at 3:26 PM ^
Apparently the demon in this case was inoperable brain cancer. That brings things into the realm of the understandable. Slowly wasting away with brain cancer is a shitty way to go, and I can certainly get it if someone would rather go out this way.
August 20th, 2012 at 4:11 PM ^
Yes. Under those circumstances, I can not blame anyone for not wanting to waste away with cancer. I saw what happened to my father in his 16 month battle with esophegeal cancer and it was pretty devastating.
That said, it seems a bit flamboyant and dramatic to do it in that manner. These days, there are people who you can hire to have that done quietly...so I dont understand the bridge bit.
August 20th, 2012 at 4:12 PM ^
Always a showman.
August 20th, 2012 at 4:11 PM ^
I would think I could come up with something a little less terrifying that plummeting off a bridge, but probably still better than brain cancer.
August 20th, 2012 at 6:56 PM ^
...is seriously one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
But seriously, I love Enemy of the State. It's sad to see him go.

Domino was horrible...unwatchable really.
