OT: Did you know any athletes while at UM?

Submitted by WindyCityBlue on

...And do you have any funny stories about them?

I wasn't close, but I did know Tom Brady.  I was at Rick's with some of my Daily friends (I was good friends with the head football writer et al.) and Tom Brady came up to us (yes, me and one other person) and said something to the tune, "I don't what it is with the woman at this place, I can't talk to any of them!"

Now look at him!

I also knew Dhani Jones.  He was in my dorm and we were bio lab partners.  Nothing too funny about him other than that we liked to wear nail polish.

Dugan Fife, Remy Hamilton and a slew of wrestlers (Catrabone, the Young brothers and Brandon Howe).  Joe Warren was around all the time.  Friends with Sweat, Shea, Tuman and big Zack.

I lived next to Trevor Pryce my freshman year.

I was driving through the parking lot by Schembechler Hall after band practice one day and Gabe Watson flagged me down for a ride. When he opened the door, he was surprised to find out I wasn't Tim Bracken who I guess had a similar car. I offered to give him a ride anyway and he was super nice. I told him that he should come out and watch on of our practices sometime and a couple days later he showed up with a few other players and watched for about 30 minutes. He also told me my voice sounded like Lloyd Carr which I thought was funny.

baseball players.... even lived with a few.

Other noteworthy encounters:

Kevin Sullivan, Olympic Runner, was a Civil Engineer and we had quite a few courses together.

Had an Econ course with Eric Montross' sister who, I think was on the v-ball squad.  I bring it up because it was a couple of years after Webber's time out fiasco in that final against UNC and Montross.  Even though this girl (and her father and grand father) were pledged to U of M, a little part of me hated her immensely because of her brother.

Ran into some football players occasionally at the IM building in pick up hoops, most noteably Tai Streets

Shot hoops with Marty Turco after hours at the IM building once.  I worked as a building supe and he was there as I was shutting things down.  I certainly wasn't going to kick him out.

I'm going to go obscure for this one.  I played on a championship co-ed intramural team my senior year.  In our semi-final game, we played against Mickey Zitsman(sp?) and his twin brother.  Mickey was a walk-on on the hoops team.  Short guy, Maybe 5'6" but could shoot lights out from the three.

Lastly, I was really good friends with a kid who was on pace to make the golf team his freshmen year, but he over slept on one of his tee times.  That didn't end well.

You beat me to Kevin Sullivan - I knew him from a couple of Calculus classes.

I also had a friend of mine who's roommate went to high school with a couple of the players on the women's basketball team in 95-96.  Met them at a party, and totally shot down.

Billy Muckalt used to nail a girl I knew so we were pressured to hang out and drink beers. Quiet guy.

Brian Griese and I had a mutual friend so we got drunk together on several occassions.

My ex dated Tommy Brady immediately before me and she introduced us twice at Touchdowns. He couldn't have been a nicer guy considering I was dating his ex.

There are probably more I'm forgetting but those come to mind.

yes, I am very proud of that fact, however I never heard that term before. I was told that was called 1 vag of separation. My other "Peter-in laws" apparently include:

Andy Roddick

Justin Leonard

Antawn Jamison

Dean Cain

Kirk Herbstreit

Jesse Palmer

and I'm sure a few others that I don't know about.

In 1986, we called up the drum major (who shall remain nameless ) and invited him to our house for a party. He proceeded to get shit-faced and hung out on our porch by himself, slumped over in the chair.

...so I knew a boatload of athletes from classes, including Grant Bowman, David Brandt, and Drew Henson.

A lot of athletes lived in my apartment building at one time or another including Phil Brabbs and Matt Lentz, but I didn't know them.

He was in one of my Communications classes, and in my section, sophomore year. Having transferred in that year, I had no idea who he was. So we were discussing organizational behavior, and he starts talking about how a team works on the field, and I was like, "Who is this dumb  jock?"  I figured it out a little later - QB, football team. Uh, yeah.

Worked at Fingerle Lumber with Steve Hutchinson and Jeff Backus. Nice guys. They came to a party we had once and had a beer. Ben Mast and BJ Askew also worked there.

Martavious Odoms, Patrick Omameh, Kenny Demens, Stu Douglass, Zach Novak, were in my 12 person summer term class.  Omameh is actually very smart, good speaker, and a diligent worker.  I was very impressed with his work ethic outside of football and he is one of my favorite players on the team because of that.

I met a couple basketball players at Skeeps: Lavell Blanchard, Bernard Robinson.

Lavell was standing at the bar with a very pretty girl as I was getting a beer. Introduced myself to him and the girl, found out it was his fiance.  Told him, "Well done."  They laughed.  Talked for about 10 minutes.  He was getting ready to go to Italy to play pro-ball in a few months.  I asked him if he was anxious about the move since he'd grown up in Ann Arbor, went to Pioneer then U-M, never lived anywhere else.  Said no, anywhere he goes with his fiance feels like home.  Sappy SAPPY line, but homegirl ate it up; they were making out as I walked away.  I can't help but feel a little bit responsible for most likely getting Lavell laid that night.

Ran into B-Rob as I was walking to the mens room one night.  He was obviously having a GREAT time, which was pretty consistent with his reputation.  Guys had a game coming up, so I asked how practice was going.  With a huge grin on his face he says, "I'm getting DRUNK, boyyyy!" and dude high-fives me.  Very silly kid.

Re: football captains and Lloyd, the fraternity I was in used to throw the team's pep-rally every year from our balcony on State Street.  Huge reason I joined the house; very well planned - marching band, dance team, food vendors, ESPN would come.  So every year for 3 years I'd meet the captains briefly, wish them a championship season, and shake Lloyd's hand.  The year LeeAnn Tweeden came to the house with Fox Sports was memorable.

My senior year I asked LC if he'd sign a glossy color printout I'd run off of him on the sidelines.  He signed it, "Clean your house. Coach Lloyd Carr."  I hung it up in the hall-way.  In a week, the house was cleaner than I'd ever seen it.  In two... not so much.

I had a spanish class with Sheridan during Lloyd's last year. We weren't close but we knew each other and got along well enough. I can tell you that he was a decent guy and I really did feel for him throughout the 08 season. It's hard to see somebody you know go through that miserable season.

made it inevitable.  Brandon Minor lived on my hall my freshman year (though he was rarely there...hmm...) and while I didn't know him well, they did call the police to remove his giant pet snake from the dorm halfway through the year (insert pun here).  My friends were pretty good friends with Greg Matthews, as well.  After a game in the Sheridan era, he texted my buddy that Michigan would win as long as he kept "catching crispy passes from nicky shay."

Also, this year one of my friends was dating Brandon Graham for a while.  According to her, he was the nicest guy she knew.  I met him a few times as a result, and he couldn't have been more laid back and good-natured.

I did have Mike Massey in my Stats section.  He never missed class, but the GSI made attending worthwhile...

Two stories, both reffing IM b-ball - 1) saw Harbaugh dress down one of his linemen (his IM team consisted of all tight ends and linemen) for taking a cheap shot at another player during a game (it felt really cool at the time, and showed how much the team respected Harbaugh and saw him as a leader), and 2) saw Anthony Carter goaltend a shot during a different IM game - I had never seen a person jump that high, and totally blew the call - thank cthuthlu that my partner had it together and got the call right...

Was in my accounting 272 I think class in the fall of 1997.  I was impressed that an athlete would actually take a weeder class like that.  We would talk accounting quite a bit in class.  I'm not sure how he did though...

Russell Davis (Steelers) and Harlan Huckleby (Packers) were nice guys and very friendly to "regular people", Kurt Greer (mean SOB who was an All Pro defense lineman with the Cardinals), Rick Leach was around and none too friendly to the general student population.

Mel Owens who was a dangerous guy who went to play for the Rams and I think he may have been an All Pro.  Mike Jolly (goofy looking white guy who played for the Packers), Ralph Clayton who ended up changing his name, I believe he converted to Islam and was working in the Inacomp Computer Center warehouse in the 1990's.  Roosevelt Smith was next door and I think got kicked off the team -one of the many guys from Cass tech.

Brothers Mike Leoni and  Tony Leoni from Flint who never saw the field and were none too sharp - they had an argument about what they would do if an Gorilla walked into their room - one said he would hit it over the head with a chair.

Mark DeSantis was in the accelerated premed program, Interflex maybe?  He did football, ate and studied - had no time for anything else.  Never met anyone that dedicated.

As you can imagine the West Quad BB Teams were stacked.  I think Jolly ended up on the "B" squad and he could dunk as could all of the "A" squad.

Went to bschool with Fritz Henderson (baseball and ex-GM Pres) and George Foussianes Captain of the Baseball team and set the season record for home runs in the Big Ten I think. Was drafted and played in the minors for awhile.  He is a business exec someplace now.  Both good guys

Kevin Cislo, former captain of our baseball team, happens to be one of my good friends.  Sad he blew his shoulder out, I was totally counting on some box seats to whatever team he plays for. Now I just get to watch him coach high school baseball and football....

Really great guy though. I'm female, and I stay away from baseball players because they're generally assholes (this coming from my cousin who played college baseball as well...and is in fact, an asshole). KC is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. He was in the School of Education with me and we used to sit and make inappropriate comments about our students...

Played some IM softball with Zoltan.  He was a blast to play with and I have the honor of saying I chest bumped a 5th round drafted punter.

I'm friends with one of our current linebackers, and he invited my friends and I over after the spring game, where 2 of my girlfriends proceeded to annihilate one of the QBs in beverage pong. In his defense, they were really on that night and kept the table for a while. Long story short, one of the girls got sick and we had to take her back to West Quad, where she evaded DPS by climbing out the 5th floor window and running to Newberry without her shoes, jacket or phone. The 3am shift DPS officers were not pleased.

My roommate out here up until a year ago was on the track team at Michigan, and I still hang out with the Sarantos brothers a lot (usually for volleyball).

Also, Obi Ezeh blatantly asks my brother's long time girlfriend out on a weekly basis.  And asks to have sex with her, straight out.  My brother is the biggest M fan I know, but no longer a fan of all the players.  He was happy to hear how well Kenny Demens is doing.
