OT: Dexter Season Finale (Spoiler)

Did anyone watch Dexter? Damn I love that show! Too bad next season is the last. What happens to Dexter? Pretty much the three options are he dies, gets caught, or escapes somewhere.

That was a nice twist at the end. I did think the season took a lot of turns, bringing in a lot more characters than previous seasons with Hannah McKay pretty much being the constant. The Trinity Killer season was tops and probably wont be topped but this season ended up being pretty good too.

Last season of Dexter in 9 months and counting...

This season was ok but seemed mostly filler to make a few more $ before the final season. The writting wasnt as good as it's has been and some episodes were just awful. What happend to the dark humor? My favorite thing about this show was Dexters inner-monolog that had the most amazing one-liners.

His inner monologue seems to have disappeared now that he realizes his "dark passenger" isn't a dark passenger at all; it's just part of who Dexter is.

I thought this season of Dexter took some unnecessary steps.  Dexter seems to be unraveling, but maybe that's the point.  He just doesn't seem to be as "put together" as he used to be.  Too many loose ends, rash decisions, etc.

observations about loose ends and rash/unexplainable decisions is not just a Dexter thing, but is becomming increasingly common with the new generation of cable dramas.  While the formula of the TV drama has changed with the acceptance of previously taboo topics and use of violence/drugs and the "moral grey area" plot threads, a lot of the new bread of HBO/AMC/SHOWTIME shows are built around very compelling premises with limited staying power.  In other words, once you get past the novelty, there is not really that much there to consistently deliver TV that is at once compelling and believable.  Homeland and The Walking Dead are already moving into that territory, with Homeland only being in Season 2.  Game of Thrones will probably not face similar problems due to the complexity and coherence of its source material.  As for Dexter, I could not sustain interest past two seasons.

The same thing happened with Sons of Anarchy, which I loved at first, but this season it all just got way too silly.  Game of Thrones will be fine through next season, but if you read the books even they start feeling that particular disease.  I think it comes down to the new power of the showrunners and the writers and there's not as much editorial controls as there used to be.  In some ways this is a good thing(see first three ASOIAF books, first couple of seasons of Dexter, SoA, Homeland, etc.) but there is a price to pay when people who say, "Wouldn;t it be neat if......" don't get told no.

Chaos is found in greatest abundance wherever order is being sought.  It always defeats order because it is better organized.

Everyone is happy that the most innocent person is dead.

Dexter has become a true serial killer, not just a serial killer-serial killer. He is no longer a hero, and perhaps even not an anti-hero. He is becoming the villian and he has brought down Deb with him.

This is the genius of the writing, to me.

Come on, man.  What about "season finale" would need a spoiler tag.

You probably woulda looked anyhow, right?

If you're looking at the thread for season finale, and only in the 3rd season, you must have wanted to learn something.

So, you were bound to find out that Dexter was going to kill LaGuerta to protect his ass, since she knew he was a murderer, and Deb knew too--so instead, in the heat of the moment, Deb SHOOTS LaGuerta!  NO SHIT!!!  And then Hannah got herself out of jail, only to set up next season, for she and Dexter to run away together--or, will Deb kill Hannah?? and then run away with Dexter??  Because, really, incest (they're not REALLY brother and sister by blood anyhow, right?) isn't really any worse than murder, is it?  They're both murderers at that point, so, RUN DEXTER AND DEB!! RUN!!  Get in that boat and float off into the sunset.

I've always preferred the Dexter books to the tv show.  Not that the show is bad, I just personally think the books that inspired the series are better.  The books are radically different though, characters in the show that died are alive in the books and vice versa.

I haven't had a chance to watch any of this season (I don't get Showtime so I'm stuck waiting until they hit DVD) but I've heard it is a lot better than season 6 so I can't wait to see them.

I'm just waiting for Game of Thrones to return.  That show is seriously amazing (but again the books are better).

But I'm prepared to be disappointed, because i love that show and whenever the good shows end I don't like how they do it.

If you like the show, you'll love the books.  Even more so than the tv show.  There are some similarities between the two but of course they changed a lot.  Like LaGuerta.  She dies in book 1 and Doakes is still alive in book 4, although he doesn't have a tongue and is missing limbs from, if I remember correctly, from the ice truck killer.  So he mumbles and swears a lot at Dexter.  Awesome stuff.  And Deb does find out he is a killer in the books too, and doesn't turn him in.  I haven't got to books 5 and 6 yet.  Tackled all 5 books of George RR Martin over the last year.  One other really cool thing about the books is Rita's kids are like Dexter.  So he starts teaching them the code.  Dark and creepy, Jeff Lindsay writes some good stuff.

The only thing I didn't like about the finale was how sloppy Deb shooting LaGuerta was.  All police guns have ballistics taken before given to an officer.  So unless they dug the bullet out, or dropped her in the ocean, police would find out it was Deb's gun. Not to mention the phone call to dispatch and them knowing she's at the marina.  I could see Dexter going back into LaGuerta house and buring the search warrant and other stuff.  So that's ok.  But no blood on the dress as she walks away?  Pretty messy ending.  I wonder how they'll clean it up in next season's opening show.

The total book series in order:

1. Darkly Dreaming Dexter

2. Dearly Devoted Dexter

3. Dexter in the Dark

4. Dexter by Design

5. Dexter is Delicious

6. Double Dexter

I like them better than the show.  The books are definitely full of morbid humor especially in his internal monologue.

I read all the True Blood books, because at the end of season 3 I wanted more..So, I get how they leave some similarities, but change it up.

The Doaks stuff sounds great!  LOL..I can just see that scene.  Thanks for sharing it!  I wonder how they'll do it too, because Dexter shooting the dude in his stab wound seems a little sloppy too--I think there are ways to figure out the death would be caused by a sliced aorta, not a shot through it.  It'll be interesting though.  I just hope its not too lame...  LOVE this show!

Yeah, the no blood on her dress as they walk though the party was a bit sloppy to me, but here's what I think happened.   We found out after the episode that Jennifer Carpenter running over to hug "Maria" after she shot her was not scripted it was improvised.   I am betting that they shot the walking through the party scene first and the shooting scene later and just didn't catch it (which is a really big miss).

What is interesting though is we all have it wrong.  It is Maria we should be rooting for, not Dexter. Dexter is the bad guy, remember?    He is responsible for innocent people dying like Rita and like that photographer from the Trinity season.....(it was the photographer's assistant that was the killer, and Dexter, in a hurry, killed the wrong guy).   He need to answer for that.    I do believe the show ends with Deb killing Dexter.

One of the reasons the books are better is that the books are told from the first-person, from the thoughts of the main character, and even with narration it's really hard to go into detailed thoughts when a first-person narrative is conveyed on the screen.

I thought it was a really good, redemptive season (last seasn was brutal), but like Walter White and Tony Soprano, I have turned on Dex and I want him to pay for his crimes.

No. I meant Rita. She was a good character until they got married, then they turned her into an annoying wet blanket wife character. This was compounded by Rita scenes often including Aster and Cody.

But Lyla was pretty damn annoying too. Supporting characters are not the strong suit of this show. Quinn, LaGuerta, Batista, Deb, Rita ... all went through stretches where their characters became unbearable. The Batista/LaGuerta marriage was a disaster for the Batista character. The best supporting characters are often the one year guests. Ray Williamson was the best non-Dexter character this season.

Minor detour, but with other TV shows being mentioned, and Brian being a BSG fan and all...

Anyone watch Blood and Chrome on YouTube?  Reactions?  I found it like a drug, giving me a quick fix of the bells and whistles that help give BSG its rich texture:  the music, the CGI (and better CGI), etc.  But what was sorely lacking was the more fundamental things that made BSG the greatest ever -- the characters, the blur of good and evil and right and wrong, and of course, the unique stress the show created (being chased relentlessly, with the future unknown).  Here, there is a pretty clear delinetion of good/right from evil/wrong, and we know for sure what the future holds.  So it can't ever be close to the same thing.  Ultimately, B&C is like a nice injection of a powerful narcotic that lasts while you watch it, but when its over, you feel like you've wasted your time a bit.

Plus, they pimped out the "old" Centurions, to make them as wickedly nasty as the "later" Centurions.  This destroys some of the feel of BSG, where the tin-can nature of the "old" Centurions was part of the fabric of the tale of how the Cylons improved over those 40 years.

The only way B&C gets any good, IMHO, is if they show the arrival of the Five in the Colony, and we get some portrayal of how they convinced the Cylons to stand down, how they made the 9 models, how the 1's destroyed the 8's, etc.  But that would require hiring back part of the cast (which, if I heard right, they did with a sentence or two from Tricia in Epi 10 of B&C, sort of like a certain UM alum did at the very end of Epi 3 / Revenge of the Sith).

As Magnus and others mentioned above, the lack of "dark humor" has eroded too much, and without fail there will be a couple of episodes that flat out stink in all of the Dexter seasons.  I don't get why there is such a disconnect at times.

Overall, this has been a pretty interesting show.  And no offense, but I would take a show themed like this than any more Vampires, Sex in the City rip offs or shows emasucalting men.  Dexter has had a ton of great moments and great one liners.  One can interprete a lot of what's going via the human condition, and isn't hanging on one thing per se.  It is weird though when he doesn't kill anyone for a show or two.  You grow to expect it, and get frustrated in light of Dexter's frustration.

Deb has been frankly the most annoying charater, as well as Angel.  La Querta has been the bitchy minx schemeing of a woman that everyone loves to hate.  Hannah coming back in the final season doesn't really excite me, because now there are too many possibilities.  I just remember her telling Dexter that he should have killed me[when he had the chance, context].  That is going to play out either really badly for him, Harrison or for Deb; maybe everybody.

I am not really happy that they set-up a hook-up with Quinn and Jamie at the end.  I was hoping Dexter would finally be a cliche, but I guess that is just what I probably would do.

I could see a very Seinfield ending to the series, very anti-climatic. I guess as suggested above one could predict Deb killing Dexter.  I guess that would bring things full-circle to a degree.  If I was them, I would f-up the whole show and go for outrageousness.  I would love to see Dex finally admit to Deb or someone that he talks to Harry all the time.  Never is brought up.  They portray that symptom in an interesting light, suggesting Dexter doesn't even know consciously that he is doing it.
