the game was played september 6th at 5pm?
OT: Detroit Tigers 10/6; 5pm
BLESS YOU BOYS
I hope you're right with Cabrera going 3 for 4. But let's hope he's sober by 5pm
...I have enough time to get drunk if they end up blowing it and still make it to work tomorrow.
And Cabrera will have even more time than I do
can't be too hard on Cabby though. His wife already beat his confidence down... and his face for that matter.
EDIT: Does anyone else think it was dumb of MLB to schedule the game at 5pm? I understand the impending travel schedule of the winner, but I'm going to miss the first few innings due to work.
Just think if you were a Twins fan, that game starts at 4pm for them.
Tigs better come out swinging and not look back. No more tomorrows. We need at least 10 runs in this game, probably more. If they act like human ceiling fans at the plate, we're in deep trouble. . . . .Porcello, what a thrill for that kid, eh?
Cabrera can shut up ALL the talk with a huge game and a win.
Hope he does it.
They need to come out swinging.Cabrera will take one deep.
I like that you started the thread. But by 5 pm, it may be pushe back to page 3. If that happens, please start another one. Go Placido!
I was unaware that people still viewed the board in such a way that a post could not simply be bumped back to the front page by posting in it.
I use either the MGoBoard link at the top or the Recent Posts link on the side and the post with the most recent reply ends up at the top. Are people still viewing the board just by looking at the side bars on the main page?
Yes. It's generally safe to assume most people will take the path of fewest clicks; in this case, that means using the sidebar as it appears.
Board Advice (Not directed at SgtWolverine): Make two Bookmarks, you can even put it in the browser toolbar, one for MGoBlog and one for MGoBoard/Recent Posts. It will change your life! It gives you a list of 25 of the most recently posted in topics rather than the 10 most recent OPs that you get in the sidebar.
Watch out for Inge, Magglio, and Carlos.
5 pm is even worse for those of us on the west coast. Does anyone know where I could watch a live stream of the game? I'm a teacher in Arizona and for the last 30 minutes of school we will be watching the Tigers game if I can manage to find the game online.
We? As in you and your students? If thats the case then you're the coolest teacher around LOL.
I remember watching the 06 playoffs in my science lab while the teacher would lecture her ass off about sumthin...who cares.
The dome has been so tough to play at, but at least the new stadium isn't open yet as the weather today in Minne is 46 with a 1/2" of rain expected.
Does anyone else think that having an outdoor stadium in Minneapolis starting next year is a bonehead move?
I get irked when games have to be rescheduled because the home team doesn't have priority in its stadium. This game should have been yesterday, just like Michigan's game at Minnesota a few years back should have been on Saturday instead of Friday. If a home team doesn't have a home stadium, it's not the visitors' fault.
I have tix to Game 3 of the ALDS, should the Tigers be in it!
I really want them to win, obviously. Unfortunately, I don't think they have an iceberg's chance in hell. Porcello will pitch admirably under the circumstances, but Leland will pull him after 5 innnings, with the score close. Miner will go in and give up big hits, followed by Lyon. It'll be too much for the Tigers to come back in the 8th or 9th.
Twins win, 9-5.
(God, I hope I'm wrong about this.)
Wouldn't it be great poetic justice for the Tigers to shut down the house of horrors know as the Metrodome with a resounding blowout victory?
I can only find that it is on ESPN radio. I am sure it is, but I am not having great internet skills today.
TBS is probably the worst place besides versus for a sporting event to be televised.
NFL Network is pretty awful.
features Rich Eisen, Michigan Man. He cracks me up.
does a great job with the Tour de France.
Probably have to go with Raburn in left, Maggs in right, and Guillen at DH, right? Only other thing I'd consider is Raburn at 3rd and Huff for DH with Carlos in left (because Inge is just not doing it in my opinion), but I don't think that would happen. I see a big PH situation for Avila too today.
Agree with everything except moving Raburn to 3B and playing Huff. I think we're better off with Carlos not playing the OF and you just can't count on Huff to hit. Raburn's definitely earned his spot. And yes, I hope we see Avila PH, the sooner the better, I still wish they'd given him more playing time in games where we needed runs.
No Carlos No Carlos No Carlos Keep Him In DH
1. Curtis Granderson, CF
2. Placido Polanco, 2B
3. Magglio Ordonez, RF
4. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
5. Carlos Guillen, DH
6. Ryan Raburn, LF
7. Brandon Inge, 3B
8. Gerald Laird, C
9. Ramon Santiago, SS
For da Twins:
1. Denard Span, CF
2. Orlando Cabrera, SS
3. Joe Mauer, C
4. Jason Kubel, RF
5. Michael Cuddyer, 1B
6. Delmon Young, LF
7. Jose Morales, DH
8. Matt Tolbert, 3B
9. Nick Punto, 2B
The tigers never play well in the metrodome ... I just have a feeling it's going to come down to some fluky turf bounce or a ball getting lost in the dome.
At least this is the last game they'll ever have to play there.
Baker v. Tigers this year:
20 IP (4GS), 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA and .333 Avg against (although his last start v. Tigers a few days ago, he gave up no runs on that shitty Thursday game in 5IP).
Porcello v. Twins this year:
23.1 IP (4GS), 1-2 with a 3.09 ERA and .299 Avg against (last start v. Twins he gave up 1 run in 6 1/3, and start before that he gave up 3 runs in 6...Tigers screwed him with 2 runs of O in the last, and 0 runs in the first).
I'm liking our chances in this matchup. I predict starters will leave with Tigers up 5-3 and the bullpen will hold on for a 6-4 win.
All it is is one game. The Tigers can do it even if the odds are against them.
Also Everett does a good jo when he's sacrificing bunts but I'd rather see Santiago in there. I'm more confident in his bat and I think his D is comparable to Everett's.
Either way I have to DVR the game cuz work is cock blocking and I wont be able to see any of it! Fuck.
I'm proud of these boys this year. They finished in last place in 2008 and now we're in a 1 game, winner-take-all, Central Division Championship showdown. This sure as hell beats what I went through as a baseball fan in my teens.
Guy is just ridiculous...
0-2 Cabrera takes Baker deep, that's huge.
Miguel Cabrera breaks the game open with a 2-run shot after Magglio singles in Granderson!
Miggy says EAT SHIT all ye who doubted me haha
If I could only neg Lordfoul who wanted to trade Cabrera again I WOULD!
Someone buy that guy a beer.
Looks like somebody went to his car and got his click-clack
1st and 3rd, 2 out. I sure hope the Twins have Gerald Laird coming up
Dude was 11 for 26 coming into this game against Porcello.
Seriously, is this kid actually 30? Sometimes he pitches like it. Good job getting out of the inning with only a run allowed after a mistake cost him a run.
Porcello is destroying the 5,6,7 and NOW 8 hitters.
He sure has his number.
Let's get some RUNS!
But Laird has made 3 outs on 3 pitches....he is causing my drinking to increase
That's why I criticize Leyland for playing him so much (though try doing that around here and see what you get). He literally costs the team runs when he hits. I appreciate the job he does handling the pitchers and throwing out runners, but I'd rather see him just strike out every time instead of grounding into so many double plays.
if I am crazy, I have company
You're only crazy if you get excited at the prospect of Laird hitting with a runner on first.
BUT he is strictly in there for his D/game calling.
After that I refuse to defend his ass.
Ahh f*ck. It's alright, kid, keep it up.
Scares the crap out of me.
Definitely my least favorite Tigers pitcher, but he's about all we can throw out there with someone like Zumaya gone. At least, he's the guy Leyland prefers.
on elm street style
This is unreal.
why did he take him out
Because he's by-the-book, very predictable
He needed that walk.
Gotta root for the guy and give him tons of credit for gutting it out. I wish the Tigers had just put him on the DL for a while to rest up and get healthy.
I have no faith in his ability at the plate. He is absolutely atrocious.
I know, I can hardly hide my disdain for him each game. I know "he's in for his defense" but at some point you have to be able to contribute something offensively other than strikeouts (the best he can usually offer, really), double plays and pop-up bunts. That's inexcusable when you don't hit well.
Jim Leyland. So...fucking...much.
Thing is, the second-half swoon is nothing new for him, it's just that he had the wild card to fall back on in 2006 and a crappy division this year. He underachieved in 2007 and REALLY crapped the bed in 2008 and that made this year look good in comparison. Just incredible. Still hope for tonight, though.
But I hate him as a baseball player.
Of all the guys you had in the bullpen. Miner. Zach Miner. Great job old man.
it hurts to watch
Give Leyland five seconds and he'll do nothing but praise Miner. I don't get it, I absolutely do not get it.
Better score next inning before Nathan ends the season.
Ordonez, Cabrera, Guillen up.....is Nathan gonna come in for 6 out save?
Gardenhire should listen to me...
he may pitch two
????????? holy shit
Fuck yeah! Comin' again to save the mutha-fuckin' day, yeah!
just learned some new words...all in the way of progress
Let's go Raburn, time to get to the Twinkies before Nathan comes in!
Why is Laird hitting here? Why is Laird hitting here? WHY IS LAIRD HITTING HERE!?!?
Hey at least Laird didn't make an out on the first pitch of the AB.
I don't care if we somehow win this game, I demand an apology from every Leyland/Laird apologist out there after this crapfest
1st and 3rd nobody out!!!!!!
Three chances to come through for the heart of the order, let's go!
If the Tigers don't score with runners at 1st and 3rd, no out, they do NOT belong in the playoffs. Let'see how this plays out.
There's your answer. I'm just shocked it wasn't Laird's fault (this time)
that was not a strike...
The pitch that Lyon JUST threw was EXACTLY the same spot that this piece of shit ump rung up Polanco on.
Absolutely bullshit. Way to call a tight strike zone all nite long then suddenly ring someone up on a pitch definitely out of the zone.
I said the same thing. Those two pitches could be the difference in this game.
-Save situation: good
-Non-save situation: divide by 0 error
What about in tie ballgames? I know his numbers have been terrible when he is in a game with a big lead (or way behind), but this is basically a save situation in that he needs to "save" the game so Detroit can try and win it in the 10th.
Right you are, at least tonight. Anyway, in close games he's been very good about not blowing leads or putting us behind
I bet those knees feel pretty good right about now. What a play.
The first positive thing Don Kelly has ever done in the game of baseball! Way to go BInge!!
is what I like to see....go tigers
Here we go. I don't like Rodney pitching a second inning, but I guess that's what we get. Put in Verlander!
This team confuses the hell out of me. I don't even know what to think anymore.
Stupid fake-ass carpet artificial turf...
Or the 2006 final series against KC
Nice job Rodney!
What a great baseball game. Unreal...
Unfrickinbelievable. This game is nuts.
this will be painfull....hopefully with a happy ending
This is ridiculous. It has more turns than a circa 1990s WWF title match. I half expect Adam Everett to rip off his Tigers jersey to reveal a Twins one, then Kirk Gibson runs out of the dugout and hits a homer to win it for the Tigers
This is crazier than an episode of the Hills, which I watch regularly, with my buddy House (my wife rolls her eyes because she wants to watch Desperate Housewives). Meanwhile, my dad calls me complaining about the Celtics again while I read and email about how some guy's dog looks like Kevin Garnett. These are my readers!
Well Played... How's The Duel?
Great. No Maggs or Carlos.
I didn't mind the Guillen move, but I would have left Maggs in. I'm not sure why they think Thomas or Raburn is a great defensive upgrade. Granted Maggs is awful in the outfield, but I haven't seen anything out of those guys.
The Yankees should buy the loser a round of beers....the winning team's bullpen will be used up if this keeps up.
Granderson to Raburn: THIS is how you do it
That made up for that horse shit K call on Polanco.
2ND AND 3RD 1 OUT!!!!! LET'S DO THIS!!!!
Bases loaded, 1 out. Gotta get it done guys!
Please do not hit into a double play....
Bad missed call on the hit-by-pitch there
that should have been a HBP. Even if the ball hits your jersey it's a HBP.
Wait a minute, wait a minute. Are a bunch of people watching this game at BDubs and the ump is prolonging the game because they don't want to leave?
Your favorite CalJr-> LAIRD!
More like LARD. But if he gets this runner in I'll name my first kid "Gerald". Well, maybe my dog.
why laird why?
Swung at ball four.....
I am beside myself. Why not put in Avila???
Laird is beside himself literally because he is a fat tub of lard that can't do anything right but be a fat tub of lard. Just for emphasis, I do not like Gerald Laird while he's on the Tigers
My new nickname for Laird is going to be "Groundhog Day" since the same, terrible, depressing thing happens everytime he comes up and it makes me want to kill myself in hilarious ways
He had 36 pitches coming into the inning.
Pitching 3+ innings? Has he done this recently? I might die a little tonight.
Once it got to 3-1, Laird shouldn't have even considered swinging. Seriously.
That should end Jim Leyland's tenure as Tigers manager. There's just no excuse to not get a run in when you have runners at 2nd and 3rd and NOBODY out. It shows a complete lack of a gameplan. Leyland is a clueless, senile old fool who needs to be put out to pasture.
Leyland is like that guy in the joke who's drowning and keeps ignoring people's help because he says God will save him. God sent him Aubrey Huff getting hit by a pitch and Don Kelly (DON FREAKING KELLY) scoring a go-ahead run, Alex Avila and the bunt and Leyland ignored them all
But fire Leyland. Inexcusable to let Laird have those ABs and put Rodney out there for a fourth inning. Gross negligence.
Knee-jerk implies a reaction without thought. Leyland has done the exact same thing every single year. Fire his ass now if you ever want to win a damn thing, Tigers. To all you Leyland supporters, suck it...again
welp that sucked
Maybe next year....
Yanks are gonna carve up the Twins anyway...
So many chances Tigers... so many chances....
Dump Laird and make Avila your full-time catcher.
Everyone hating on Leyland is a fuckin' idiot
You could've tried to argue that any of the three previous years, but not this year. That's a vintage Leyland choke job, plain and simple. Just atrocious
this team had no business being where they are this year, there are holes everywhere, it's amazing he got them this far
Who do you think is responsible for a bunch of the holes in this roster? You think Leyland is just a homely old man who wants to manage baseball games? The Jurrjens for Renteria trade was almost entirely his design.
A team with $130 million payroll better damn well be contending for division titles.
How do you justify lettting Laird hit in that instance with Thames and Avila on the bench? How do you justify putting someone who hasn't gone two innings all year out there for their fourth inning? I don't mean to be a dick, but I'd like to hear how those are smart moves.
Exactly. I've been ripped around here for ripping on Leyland but after tonight nobody with a working brain could have a single reason to support him. How many times does he have to choke in September for people like you to realize he's not the answer?
Every year he's been here the Tigers have absolutely tanked in September. They flat-out don't perform under pressure.
And every year before that we lost what, 120 games a year? Take what he's given us (namely a WS appearance). I'm not saying he doesn't need to go, I'm just saying it's not as bad as you're making it out to be.
It's possible to believe that Leyland was the right guy for the job in 2006 and no longer is now. One position does not have to contradict the other. It's silly to portray it as an either-or. I'm not upset that Dombrowski hired him four years ago, but to keep him employed idefinitely just because of 2006 is silly. The Tigers have had one of the highest payrolls in baseball for three years running and have nothing to show for it.
This is what I'm getting at, and this year takes the cake. Not only was he handed a fairly stacked team, he also got to manage in the worst division in either league. Yet it doesn't matter how many chances you give Leyland to clinch (or how many times he can have first and third or bases loaded with less than two outs), he manages to screw it up. Leyland couldn't guess the result of a coin flip if you gave him five chances. It's stupid to pin this on the ump (some bad calls went both ways, as always), the Tigers has numerous chances to win this game, plus they had multiple chances to get the job done in the last week. They only needed one more win but Leyland was too stubborn and outmanaged to pull that off. Yeah, he seemed like the right guy in 2006, but that's three years and 0 playoff appearances ago.
