OT - Detroit City FC plays its final regular season home game tomorrow vs. Erie Admirals!

Submitted by dlcase1708 on

Hey guys, just thought I'd give everyone a heads up that Detroit City FC plays its final regular season game tomorrow at Cass Tech high school in Detroit.  So far, the team has a 4-1-5 record, with its only loss being to AFC Cleveland.  DCFC is in first place in its division, and thus controls its own destiny during its last two games (we play tonight, away, at FC Buffalo).

If you have yet to come out to any of the games, please take this opportunity to do so!  Last weekend we had a record crowd of 1743, and we hope to break that this weekend against Erie.  Additionally, tomorrow is family day at the game, so all kids 12 and under get in free.  Plus, if you love the atmosphere of the student section at a Michigan football game, you will absolutely LOVE the atmosphere of the supporters' section.  It's a one of a kind experience.

That was just a friendly match, and not many of our starters played, if any. Honestly, I wasn't there, and I haven't heard anything about it either.  One of the team's owners, David Dwaihy, used to play for AAFC actually, which was part of the reason why we played them.

how many of these have there been?

i'll say something to one of the owners next time i see one at an event, but it's a really bad idea to hold friendlies on 1 day's notice that's actually no notice because nobody tells the season ticket holders. the only mention of any kind that i saw was on the motor city supporters facebook page, which is odd, because i'd have thought that a perk of founders' circle membership would be, you know, notification of when games are happening. i only found out about it because of a friend who's involved with aafc.

Yeah I mean, I only find out about the day of the game as well, which was unfortunate, and so I didn't end up going.  I would have expected more to be put out there about it as well.

Been to two games and they were alot of fun. I highly recommend it. Should be an awesome atmosphere tomorrow since the division title is on the line. Both teams will probably have something to play for as Erie is second IIRC. There was an article about the atmosphere in the Detroit News recently. Decent read: Link

The games are so much fun.  Since I'm an intern, one of my jobs is to make sure the supporters' section doesn't get too rowdy.  It sucks when I have to take smoke bombs or flares from them, because I know that if I wasn't working, I'd be right there with them!  They are a dedicated group of people, and the players and the organization love having them.

I hate that it conflicts with the Euro Cup final, but I've been to every game I can so far and I'm not losing that streak on the last game. Please, everybody go! It's an amazing atmosphere (though the crowd can get a bit hostile if you're only used to Michigan games), a great team, and like OP said if we win this we win the division (assuming we win at Buffalo tonight, knock on wood)!! Show up, come to the supporter section, and cheer on DCFC to a championship in their first ever season!

This is what fun looks like, for those wondering.

I was at the May 26th game - also against Erie - and it was a blast. I can definitely vouch for the atmosphere. I took my wife, who is not a sports person, and she even enjoyed it.

Incidentally, DTE employee parking is on floors 5 through 9 of the MGM garage, if there turn out to be any parking issues. It's a little walk to Cass Tech from there, but not too far (I was only at the one game, so I don't know what the typical  parking situation is). On the weekends, I am pretty sure your presence on those floors wouldn't be questioned.

sometimes my wife and i go back and forth between the two sides. with the exception of the last game, where we only found space in the last section of the supporters' side, we've been able to find spaces midfield on that side during the game.

but the reason for that is that you get exposed to a lot of smoke bombs and noise right in the middle of it, so you'd have to be younger than me to actually want to stay there all game. i'm not sitting right in the middle of it again until i get myself a functioning gas mask.

It fills up by kickoff, but you can always find a spot to squeeze in. If you're in a group just get there a minute or two before kickoff and you'll be fine, good spots are hard to find by kickoff but if you're alone you can find one (lots of people end up in the isles). Like Jon said though, be prepared to shout all game, and there are indeed smoke bombs. If you like to cheer and shout all game then you'll love it, but if you're one of the more chill fans I would stick to the corners of the section, or the other stands.

I hope lots of y'all show up. Then after the game if you still need a fix head on out to Pontiac to watch the PDL Bucks play. They've got two more reg season home games - next Saturday against Cincinnati and the following Sunday (July 15) against 2nd place River City.

I don't know what he's talking about, I know for a fact there is no promotion in the US minor leagues. However, given all of the support DCFC has gotten (certainly more than was expected), an MLS team in detroit is looking like less of a pipe dream than it did a year ago.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm expecting attendance next year to average around 2500+. And if it continues to increase, I would imagine we could look like an attractive candidate for expansion in 10 or so years.

EDIT - would be awesome if there was a relegation system in the US. But we don't have the support to do something like that. Too many teams would go bankrupt due to loss of support after relegation and travel costs are much much worse than in Europe.
