I wonder how committed they thought he was when he was suing them.

I find it funny that this publication would choose to honor this man. He has certainly left his mark on MSU football. That mark is an asterisk by their record. How quickly we forget that Perles was fired and the entire 1994 season forfeited because Perles and his croanies were paying players, having tutors take tests for players, buying grades and encouraging the abuse of performance enhancing drugs(the last of which was never proven but was spelled out in great detail in Mandaritch's book). Rodriguez gets hung out to dry for PRACTICING too much, and Perles gets praised for running the dirtiest MSU program in history(Yes, Perles was dirtier than Saban)?

After reading the article I decided to look at the comments people left. I found this one to be quite entertaining.

"As a Spartan, this article makes me proud. Thank you for writing a well justified, positive article about one of the great men that defines MSU. When I look at MSU and consider other universities, there is one word that describes the university - and in my opinion - separates it from others. The word is CLASS. George Perles, Mark Dantonio, Tom Izzo, Ron Mason and so many other leaders of MSU are just plain classy. Our state should be proud of their leadership and the positive impact they have on our communities. Please write more stories like this - so much more worthwhile to read than other "crap" that is in the paper."

I just don't understand how a sparty brain works. Those people are delusional. You stay classy sparty.

... because frankly I don't give a shit about MSU football.  However, it sounds like it is just a fluff piece on an old football coach written in a local paper.  This isn't revisionist history here, it's simply a local paper doing what most local papers do, appealling to its base.

Which would be totally fine if it wasn't about George Perles.

The best equivelant I can think of would be if you could imagine Mike Leach ending up as a board member of Texas Tech and/orathletic director after everything that's happened with him since last year with the addition that it was discovered that he paid players, fudged their grades, gave them steroids, and got a season vacated.

I will never understand what makes Sparty tick. If we had somebody pull the crap Perles did here, he'd be run out of town so fast his legs would fall off. But at MSU, guys like Perles are the heroes. They can keep them. Mason, Perles, Dantonio, all of them.

the line that makes it worth reading-  "and the coach that gave them their only rose bowl appearance in the last 44 years"-   yes, 44 years  LOL

In the fall of 2006 I was working on a statewide political campaign, and I had numerous opportunities to meet and talk with Perles as he was running for MSU Board of Trustees.

He seemed like a relatively affable guy, and was in awe of Michigan's 2006 defense at the time. Despite being a Michigan fan (and after some amiable ribbing), he let me try on his Rose Bowl ring, which was kind of awesome, though I probably could have squeezed two fingers into it. He was a bit of a rambler when giving a speech, but he knew how to work a crowd.

What struck me at the time was just how wracked with pain he was. I guess he had extensive back issues that have recently been corrected with surgery...but at the time, he was almost crippled by pain. That wasn't so great to see.

I had no knowledge of his background with MSU, but when I told my roommate at the time (an MSU fan) that I had met Perles, he asked me if I had punched him in the face. So I gather not every MSU fan is enamored with him.

So while this may sound odd, I guess I'm kind of a fan of George Perles...if only because he let me try on a bonafide Rose Bowl ring, and because he, like every other rational sentient being on the planet, respected the 2006 M defense.

I like George Perles.

Those were some killer matchups in the late 1980s and early 1990s. UM and MSU were 1/2 in the league, IMHE, over a 4-6 year span of so. 2 Big 10 titles, with 1 Rose Bowl appearance. Those were some fun games to watch, and as long as they werent playing Michigan, I was pulling for them. And, they also played some high end OOC foes, like September games with USC, Miami which were dogfights. I dont know, its a golden age of Big 10 football for me, so I'll always have some fondness/appreciation for what he did.

As for the 1994 stuff, is it worth pointing out that the NCAA basically cleared him of any personal wrong doing and/or the fact that plenty of folks around these parts still love Steve Fisher?

Perles is  a big part of Michigan sports history--and as the Steeler DC during the 1970s, really football history--and the article is just a puff piece anyway.

At MSU. Too many times he was tabbed "the architect of the steel curtain." (Bud Carson) He was a DC one year, a DL coach in prior years. Greenwood, Greene, Holmes and White were pretty talented dudes. I find Perles to be a hustling Detroiter who made the most of his opportunities and over achieved.

Man, I hate people who make the most of their opportunities and over achieve. We should kick those folks out of the country

But, you're right about the Steelers. I meant  to write defensive coach, as he was with the team during their entire run in the 1970s. He was the DC for their third SB title and assistant HC during their fourth.

As for MSU, from 1987-1990, the Spartans were 25-5-2 in Big 10 play. Thats some pretty rarified air for the MSU football program in my lifetime. That's the era I am talking about when I say I look back with fondness.

There was always so much lippiness coming from the E.L in those days. Perles was supposed to take over the Big 10 with that stunt 3-4 D he brought from the pros. For four years at least, he did so to a certain extent. I mean, they did win 2 Big 10 titles.

When people say UM and MSU cant both be really good at the same time, I always point back to this timeframe

Where is all this Steve Fisher love you're seeing "Around these parts"...? MGoBlog?  Michigan?  Ann Arbor? I frankly can't remember the last time someone said something nice about Fisher.

I think it is fair to keep in mind that Perles was never officially found guilty by the NCAA for paying players.  With that said, the man who recruited Perles as a player out of high school to East Lansing, Duffy Daughtery, was found guilty by the NCAA for paying players.
