OT: Derek Kief Picks Alabama

Submitted by MGoVoldemort on
Derek Kief, a WR out of Cincinatti and consensus 4 star chose Bama over long presumed favorite Ohio today. His commitment video is actually pretty decent, with the reveal being pretty innovative. http://www.derekkief.com/2013/06/commit.html?m=1 But what's an Ohio lost recruiting battle without a bit of Bucknutd gold? Tom K 276 posts Not a big loss. Johnson and Samuel have much more upside. Faster, more athletic. Kief lacks elite speed and quickness. He would never see the starting line up at OSU. 15 minutes ago via 247Sports Mobile Reply

According to 247, there was nominal interest from Michigan but no recorded offer to Kief, although it does list Mark Smith as having recruited him. The offers themselves (aside from the winner - Alabama) were from Arkansas, Boston College, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Connecticuit, Illinois, Indiana, Kent State, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio (MAC Version), Ohio State, Toledo, UCF, Vanderbilt, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Didn't seem to have the speed that Harris has.  Reminds me of a more polished Mo Ways.

Would guess that with Harris and Ways, someone like Kief wouldn't necessarily be a need with our limited schollys.

PS I like schadenfreude as much as the next guy, but the 11w guys/gals were pretty levelheaded about Kief.

sad to say, but if a recruit is good enough for alabama, I'm sure he would have been good enough for any school in ohio.

maybe urban didn't cry in front of him and his coach enough to persuade him to go buckeye.

Here2CWoodson you're crazy. Urban Meyer is the best closer in the business and don't you forget that!!!! He can get whoever he wants and will flip everyone of these kids by NSD. Did I forget to tell you how far away NSD is? It's like three years from now and that's forever and that doesn't even matter because like I said. URBAN MEYER IS THE BEST CLOSER AND GREATEST RECRUITER EVARRRRR!!!!! /buckeye'd

Big deal that the #2 player committed to scUM in may!!! Urban is a closer and that doesn't matter. Meatchicken gets early commits while Urban waits for the real great players because he has the best eye for talent and then closes. The #2 player in the country usually is lucky to end up in the top 100 by NSD. I'll trust Urban because he's the bestest greatest awesomestest at everything. /buckeye'd

Urb: What are my chances?

Kief: Not good.

Urb: You mean not good like....... one out of a hundred?

Kief: I'd say more like one out of a million.

Urb: (pause) So you're telling me there's a chance....... YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!

My observation is that Ohio is experiencing the same thing Michigan suffered through during the Rich Rod debacle.  Most top level offensive recruits don't want to play in a spread scheme.  Hoping they have as much luck as we did with it in the B1G.

Florida is loaded with talent to begin with, so convincing local kids to stay home isn't that hard. The one thing that was odd to me was the fact that after Tebow graduated, Urban tried to run a spread offense with Brantley who was a pro-style passer.
