OT- Demetri Martin & Sarah Silverman

Curious about people's opinions on these two shows. I'm more of a fan of DM than SS mostly b/c he shows charts & graphs during the skits.

Demetri Martin's material seems to be a bit contrived. Prop comedians aren't really my thing, although I do like Eugene Mirman. Sarah Silverman, on the other hand, is one funny fox.

I like Demetri's stand-up more than his show but I think it's still pretty good. I went to see him live once and it was a really great show. I've never really liked Silverman much.

Her show kills me. I love the gay guys who smoke weed and don't do much else. Comedy Central is weird with how it seems like her show has been cancelled and gone off the air intermittently, and then all of a sudden there is a new season. I kind of get a little turned off by the sociopathic aloofness that her character always conveys tho.

Not crazy about Silverman, but I can see why some people find her funny. I like Martin more because his best stuff is really hilarious, but I agree that his show can be a bit contrived at points.

important things is pretty funny. it's good for at least one out loud laugh per show. the new good/bad/interesting bit is pretty great. the thing that sold me on DM was his one man show called "If I". look it up on youtube. it's brilliant.

Sarah Silverman isn't funny at all. I don't understand how people like her get their own TV shows. Demetri Martin isn't really that funny either except he's better than Silverman, but that doesn't really say much.

Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But IMO she is one of the celebrities furthest from being considered as sexy (side note, why does she dress the same as most 12 y/o boys?). In the latest promo for her show and DM's she says something along the lines of "I wonder if I can poop in your butt?" to DM. Um yeah, sexy...

I'm not sure it's right to compare the two. Silverman is adult slapstick in a high comedy form. Martin is much more simple with puns and low level comedy that's presented in a different way (both audio through his monotone and visual through his use of props). More people will find DM funnier as it's easy to get his jokes. Most of his jokes aren't mindblowingly funny, but the fact that his presentation is different adds an extra element that people like. I think this relates really well to the Conan vs Leno argument we had during Conan's last week. It's a similar type of argument. Conan and Silverman are pulling for people's reactions to the silly-self-depreciating/adult-themed respectively bits. DM/Leno are rehashing simple jokes that aren't overly funny, but have some special presentation (for Leno, Headlines/Jay-walking) that intrigues the audience.

high brow than you think. The guy went to Yale and dropped out of NYU Law School when he decided he wanted to do comedy. He composes multi-word palindromes for a hobby. He uses charts to comedically "anaylze" things, including his own jokes. His subject matter may be pretty banal and mundane, but it's his delivery of those boring things that make his material so genius and sophisticated.

I like both shows. Demetri Martin seems like a guy that should be running out of material for his show, but as long as he keeps it somewhat fresh, I enjoy his show. On the recent shows, some of the sketches are rather stale. His standup is definitely better than the show, IME. Sarah Silverman's show is pretty hilarious, too. Her's is probably overall better than Demetri's, but Comedy Central has done a pretty good job getting these shows going.

She's the female equivalent of Eric Cartman. A really, really, tired routine. At least, I'm tired of "I'm going to be non-stop over-the-top outrageous, unlikeable, and obnoxious which is funny." Just not my thing. Martin is solid, because puns are my favorite form of humor. Not great, though. I'd like to go to Holland some day, wooden shoe? BOOM

Demetri is much funnier in stand up, but is show is pretty good too. The 2nd season he seems to have found his voice a bit more. He's about as dry as you get, comedy wise. Sarah Silverman is hilarious and bangable, but her shtick gets annoying when overexposed. Every time I have caught her show, I have laughed though.
