OT: Deadspin article on story of the death of Manti te'o's girlfriend being hoax *UNLOCKED*

Hours after the funeral, ND beat Michigan and Te'o said " All she wanted was some white roses. So I sent her roses and sent her two picks along with that."

Since she didn't exist, I say Denard gets those picks back!

I love how they (ND and Teo) are now trying to portray Teo as the victim for damage control and to try and protect his draft status.

Next thing, they are going to try and claim that if this hoax hadn't happened, ND would have beat Alabama. I mean, this has to be the reason he played so poorly in that game, right?

More than anything, this just shows what a pathetic excuse we have for journalism these days. NOBODY figured this out before deadspin?  Seriously?

It's a story that none of us can buy.  If he's straight, and has the same thoughts and urges as the rest of us "red blooded straight dudes", but with the access to basically any hot co-ed of his choosing, there is simply NO WAY he instead chooses to go for the Weird Science "nah, I got a girl in Canada man!" line.  But, having said that:

I'll concede that it's PLAUSIBLE (but hard to believe) that he was keeping up an on-line relationship with some girl on the internet while also nailing the occassional co-ed, with no reason to suspect he was being duped by his on-line girl (who isn't much of a thing at this point anyhow), and then the perpetrator hits him with the cancer thing (to have an out because the ruse is getting too hard to keep up).  

This tugs at Te'o's heart strings and he begins to think of the on-line girl as more than just a "casual chat" thing... then the "death," then the media picks up on this "wonderful story of heartbreak and perseverance," and now he feels like a chump because they really weren't THAT close, but, whatever, the added attention is coming at just the right time, and he DOES feel bad, plus he did just lose his grandma too.  He starts adding some back story, because at this point he still believes she was real but feels kind of dumb that it really wasn't as big of a relationship as the media clearly expects; maybe tells people he talked to her on the phone when he never really did, comes up with a nice "first meeting" story... etc.  At some point he tells his family some things about her which they re-quote to the media, more of his surrounding group embellish a few other details to make the story even more sweet and heartbreaking (no real harm intended)... and Voila!  The story takes on a life of its own, the MSM runs off the cliff with it.  Then, WORST NIGHTMARE TIME; it was all a hoax perpetrated by some acquaintance who is secretly in love with you.  

That's about the only plausible "non-gay" explanation that would make me go... "okay, well, I get it I guess.  He wasn't 'in on' the hoax and is sort of a victim of the perpetrator, plus the MSM, plus expectations and he allowed a few little lies to spin out of control."

This just doesn't make sense. The spin is she was an internet girlfriend who duped him. Ok I get that and I can see its plausibility in a sense.

BUT, if you look at the timeline as presented by Deadspin he supposedly met her after the Stanford game in 2009 and subsequently met her several times in Hawaii. If that is so how is it she faked not only her name but her face?

I think the story will unravel further as time goes by. For now ESPN and major media outlets seem to be buying the company line that he was duped. Methinks he was in on it the whole time. You just keep reading different accounts of when events happened and what sequence which tells me its a lie. If it really happened you'd have the facts fairly straight but if its a lie you're needing to remember all the made up facts to you're more likely to screw up those "facts" when recounting them to various sources.

I'm still willing to give Teo the benefit of the doubt at this point and I'm willing to believe he actually was duped. The most shocking part to me is how incredibly naive he must have been to have bought into this in this day and age, where we literally have an MTV show fully devoted to exposing the absurdity to online relationships that are almost always fake. 

I'm not saying this is what happened, but isn't it possible that the girl whose picture it is was in on it? If she really did meet Te'o and just denied it I could see how Te'o really did get duped. She could have been playing the girlfriend all along and just denied it when deadspin contacted her. 

The only reason this is compelling to me is the whole "send a picture with MSMK on it" thing. Seemed a little fishy to me

Jack Swarbrick is lying his ass off.  He's going down with the ship.  People are to believe that he waited 3 weeks until Deadspin outed him.  Bullshit

It'll be interesting to see if the ND press conference top's OSU's 2011 press conference for incredulous hilarity.
