Original article on Manti and his inspiring rise/story. From before Stanford game.

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865564585/Manti-Teo-A-career-that-has...

From the piece:

"Lennay Kekua was a Stanford student and Cardinal football fan when the two exchanged glances, handshakes and phone numbers that fateful weekend three seasons ago."

"“Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there. But within the last year, they became a couple."

"Kekua, who eventually graduated from Stanford, was, in fact, doing so well that she was released from the hospital on Sept. 10. And Brian Te’o was among those congratulating her via telephone."

Raises questions like WHO DID HE EXCHANGE GLANCES WITH? WHO DID HIS DAD TALK TO ON THE PHONE? WHO DID HE MEET UP WITH IN HAWAII?

Marry a younger woman. As her beauty fades, so will your eyesight.

No way he's a victim. Allegedly a family friend behind the fake twitter and such. His parents tied into it. If deadspin's investigation is as thorough as it seems he had to have known. Te'o can't be that naive.

oh wait, I already believed all these things.   The only question I have left is:  Is there any form of media that isn't a form of manipulation and distortion of the 'facts' in order to sell a better narrative of humanity?

You and your brethern have been sent by a secret Soviet cabal to spread disinformation among the American populace about events in the American experience. You are doing this to sow discontent that will eventually loosen the societal glue that binds the nation. This will, you hope, render America a weakened state highly vulnerable to attack.

Your nefarious designs are obvious to all. You want to destroy America. The truth is there for all to see.

A house divided cannot stand. That is a truism your cabal has embraced. You are seeking to divide us by manipulating the large mass of nincompoops who inhabit this country into believing the most absurd theories propounded by Man. Theories that make the Greek mythos look positively scientific by comparison.

There is nothing nefarious about the fact that I am anti-(this modern distortion of)democracy.

But this isn't the place for this conversation, I was just making a joke earlier.  A joke made funnier by it's truth coupled with your fear of that truth.

ps. America has never, ever, been a house united.  And our collective strength has shown during those moments when we questioned conventional wisdom and sought truth.

This guy is making Manti Te'o, Terrelle Pryor, and Brian Kelly look like saints. Jesus, what the fuck is wrong with you people? Where has the ability to reason gone?

While he is probably really out there, there is plenty of info that normal citizens are not given access to.  There is a class of people who have historically controlled money, information and power.  If you don't believe this you are really naive.  There is a reason WikiLeaks/Anonymous hackers are so feared and world governments are trying to hunt them down...it's because they expose this class and their secrets.  Pull your head out of the sand before you rip on this guy.

The truth is probably somewhere between your hunky dorey world of conformity and his "whacked out" paranoid conspiracy view.

Lessons we should all learn from this:

Do not trust the MSM to investigate anything

It is easy to hoodwink media and non media alike

It is easy to create false identities and a false narrative and protect the lie

It is especially easy to do this when the lie pulls at heart strings

People will believe what they want to believe

Assuming he is not a sociopath in the mold of Lance Armstrong, what if he was a college kid that got swept up in the hoax.  And not implying that he wasn't part of it, but maybe his buddy and him decided to pull a really stupid prank and it just blew up out of proportion, way larger than they ever expected and they couldn't back pedal out of it once it started to snowball with the national media.

IF this is the case, which I think there is a very real possibility of it being, the guy should be put on suicide watch immediately.  People who are not sociopaths or serial liars, but instead participants in a very bad series of choices they keep sinking deeper into, are often destroyed by such public shame.

I don't know the kid, but he never came off as ruthless or scheming.  If he is indeed a decent guy who made a really bad decision he probably never recovers from this...emotionally, socially, publicly, etc.  They should get him to counseling asap to clear up whatever issues led him into this situation and dealing with all the shame he will now endure.

Your explanation may actually be the closest thing to the truth so far. Sometimes people, especially those with a small selection of data points to show them otherwise, make really bad choices and its too big before they figure it out, i.e. kids lie because they don't see how big the explosion is when lies go bad. Unfortunate if true but it doesn't really make him any more of a sympathetic figure. He's already forfeited that position.

I certainly don't mean to imply there is anything about a hoax of that nature that could be considered understandable. Generally speaking, I don't understand people that lie/cheat/steal. Most people, I think, are similar in this respect.  All I mean to say is that it is plausible a little bad idea snowballed into being a catastrophically large bad idea, and I think it is the most likely explanation unless we are going to go all in and decide that he is either a pathological liar or just plain evil.

But how would he ever come off as "ruthless or scheming" when basically all we know about him is the puff pieces that ND fed the media about him? I mean, how many college athletes are there that you can actually say, "what a scumbag" about? In the pros it's a little different - the media goes after them a lot more. At the college level, the media still basically protects them.

Of course we all assumed Te'o was a good guy - the media has spent the last six months hammering that point home in our heads.  But it could be a sham.  It sounds like not only he but also his family was involved in this, which opens up a lot of character questions.

You know...after a bit of thought, I think I agree.  Unless there is some proof that this is a sociopathic Armstrong situation (topical reference!), I can imagine a situation where this spirals out of control.  Especially if it was put in place in the first place to be a beard.  You're 21 or 22, you're on the down-low, you're coming from a Mormon household, playing for a Catholic university that is having its best year in decades, and you look to be a top-ten pick.  You've got a LOT to hide if you're gay, and maybe you do something incredibly stupid to stay closeted.

Nothing but pure speculation, but I could see that as being a plausible backdrop to this.  The irony is to think how empowering it would be if he had come out this season.  "Hi I'm gay and I'm going to be defensive Heisman contender."  You would have to have massive stones for doing it, and I think the recognition of that courage would outweigh the obvious negatives.  But no one has done it before (in college football), and it would take the right kind of kid.  And T'eo may not have wanted to be that martyr.

What couild he have done to come off as ruthless or scheming?  I have a hard time imagining anything we would have been able to see. On the other hand, we may be getting a true glimpse of his character now. If he is a "decent" guy who made a really bad decision, what is he doing now? He's playing the victim and blaming someone else. I have a very hard time finding shades of gray in his behavior if he was in on this.

Very true that we never really know any of these people...hell, we have a hard enough time knowing our own families and friends.  But some people just give you a vibe.  The look in the eyes, body language, what they say, how they say it, the way they carry themselves.

This guy is one hell of an actor and fraud if he indeed is a sociapathic liar.  If this was Terrelle Pryor, I would not be as likely to suggest a hoax gone too large, and would instead suspect an elaborat scheme.  This is of course all my perception and through the many layers and lenses of media filtering through which I see these guys.

So in short, yes, it is simply my intuition.

Remember, I did use the words "at least entertain," "possibility," and "baseless rumor." Having said that, I *usually* expect something like this will rise out of a reason, hence my searching for a reason, some stressor, and that seemed to fall into place in every way except the one about proof. Other putative motives exist, but this one stands out to my instincts. I hope Manti gives a presser eventually, though I predict it won't be for a long time, maybe years.
