OT: Deadspin article on story of the death of Manti te'o's girlfriend being hoax *UNLOCKED*
I now believe that we never walked on the moon, 9/11 was an inside job, and Sandy Hook was a farce...
oh wait, I already believed all these things. The only question I have left is: Is there any form of media that isn't a form of manipulation and distortion of the 'facts' in order to sell a better narrative of humanity?
We are the dead.
Tabloids, man.
"Best investigative reporting on the planet. But go ahead and read the New York Times if you want. They get lucky sometimes." - Agent K
You and your brethern have been sent by a secret Soviet cabal to spread disinformation among the American populace about events in the American experience. You are doing this to sow discontent that will eventually loosen the societal glue that binds the nation. This will, you hope, render America a weakened state highly vulnerable to attack.
Your nefarious designs are obvious to all. You want to destroy America. The truth is there for all to see.
A house divided cannot stand. That is a truism your cabal has embraced. You are seeking to divide us by manipulating the large mass of nincompoops who inhabit this country into believing the most absurd theories propounded by Man. Theories that make the Greek mythos look positively scientific by comparison.
"The Ruhr will not be subjected to a single bomb. If an enemy bomber reaches the Ruhr, my name is not Hermann Göring: you can call me Urban Meyer!"
There is nothing nefarious about the fact that I am anti-(this modern distortion of)democracy.
But this isn't the place for this conversation, I was just making a joke earlier. A joke made funnier by it's truth coupled with your fear of that truth.
ps. America has never, ever, been a house united. And our collective strength has shown during those moments when we questioned conventional wisdom and sought truth.
We are the dead.
This is truly scary stuff. Conspiracy theorists are some of the more mentally unstable people in our society today.
This guy is making Manti Te'o, Terrelle Pryor, and Brian Kelly look like saints. Jesus, what the fuck is wrong with you people? Where has the ability to reason gone?

While he is probably really out there, there is plenty of info that normal citizens are not given access to. There is a class of people who have historically controlled money, information and power. If you don't believe this you are really naive. There is a reason WikiLeaks/Anonymous hackers are so feared and world governments are trying to hunt them down...it's because they expose this class and their secrets. Pull your head out of the sand before you rip on this guy.
The truth is probably somewhere between your hunky dorey world of conformity and his "whacked out" paranoid conspiracy view.

while the internet is a great place to discuss the merits of WikiLeaks, conspiracies, power dynamics in modern society and media, ect. this particular site isn't around for that.
This isn't just directed at you, BILG, the whole tangent is sitting right on the edge of what's okay to post on MGoBoard.

I'm part of that class. I can't tell you much, but Craig James may have been in Colorado the night JonBenet Ramsey died.

I would say the people in "society" that perform the events that lead to these other peoples digging into and finding out why they happened (whether they're making up theories or not), are much, much more mentally unstable. (edit: sorry JGB, I'm done too)
Lessons we should all learn from this:
Do not trust the MSM to investigate anything
It is easy to hoodwink media and non media alike
It is easy to create false identities and a false narrative and protect the lie
It is especially easy to do this when the lie pulls at heart strings
People will believe what they want to believe
Make your own inquiries
Amen J-don, I couldn't agree more. We are lied to so much by the msm, it is hard to know WTF is true and what is false. This is a huge sports story, but it also highlights how easily we as the public are so easily deceived and lied to. I don't know about sandy hook being fake, but that medical examiner and that Gene Rosen character creep me the f out. Also creepy is Obama trotting out children to gain sympathy for his unconstitutional gun control EO's. Anyone who wants to see blatant media lies, just YouTube CNN faking gulf war attacks or Syrian dan, it is so bad that it is laughable.
This story just cracks me up because I never liked Te'o, and like Tressel, I am LOLing my ass off at this story

Assuming he is not a sociopath in the mold of Lance Armstrong, what if he was a college kid that got swept up in the hoax. And not implying that he wasn't part of it, but maybe his buddy and him decided to pull a really stupid prank and it just blew up out of proportion, way larger than they ever expected and they couldn't back pedal out of it once it started to snowball with the national media.
IF this is the case, which I think there is a very real possibility of it being, the guy should be put on suicide watch immediately. People who are not sociopaths or serial liars, but instead participants in a very bad series of choices they keep sinking deeper into, are often destroyed by such public shame.
I don't know the kid, but he never came off as ruthless or scheming. If he is indeed a decent guy who made a really bad decision he probably never recovers from this...emotionally, socially, publicly, etc. They should get him to counseling asap to clear up whatever issues led him into this situation and dealing with all the shame he will now endure.
BILG
Your explanation may actually be the closest thing to the truth so far. Sometimes people, especially those with a small selection of data points to show them otherwise, make really bad choices and its too big before they figure it out, i.e. kids lie because they don't see how big the explosion is when lies go bad. Unfortunate if true but it doesn't really make him any more of a sympathetic figure. He's already forfeited that position.
You think it's perfectly understandable that someone would manufacture a story about a dying girlfriend? While milking it for attention and glory while also linking it with the death of a family member? Are you kidding me? This is a sick as it comes, hoax wise.
I certainly don't mean to imply there is anything about a hoax of that nature that could be considered understandable. Generally speaking, I don't understand people that lie/cheat/steal. Most people, I think, are similar in this respect. All I mean to say is that it is plausible a little bad idea snowballed into being a catastrophically large bad idea, and I think it is the most likely explanation unless we are going to go all in and decide that he is either a pathological liar or just plain evil.
Benefit of the doubt: I went with stupid rather than evil.
RT @jdubs88 Manti Te'o has lost thousands of fans in the past 10 minutes but has gained one very prominent one: Lance Armstrong.
Greetings from Bolivia.

That is a thoughtful, considered and intelligent comment.
Shame on you for interrupting the schadenfreude.
Chaos is found in greatest abundance wherever order is being sought. It always defeats order because it is better organized.
This is a really good point and has a really good chance of being the truth. The claims that he was in no way invovled seem far fetched. The claims that he did all this to raise his publicity seem even more far fetched. I think the most likely thing is what you speculate. But man, whomever decided to kill this fake woman off made a real dumb choice. They should have just broken up.
Once she has cancer, you can't break up. If you do, you become...Lance Armstrong.
Well said. As effed up all of this is to us, the hoax (which I believe) is likely to have originated as something small that blew up all of a sudden and to go backwards and "fix" everything would have been a huge blow and it just continued...now here we are. It's screwy as hell but I wish no harm to Manti for all of this nonsense.
I don't know the kid, but he never came off as ruthless or scheming.
But how would he ever come off as "ruthless or scheming" when basically all we know about him is the puff pieces that ND fed the media about him? I mean, how many college athletes are there that you can actually say, "what a scumbag" about? In the pros it's a little different - the media goes after them a lot more. At the college level, the media still basically protects them.
Of course we all assumed Te'o was a good guy - the media has spent the last six months hammering that point home in our heads. But it could be a sham. It sounds like not only he but also his family was involved in this, which opens up a lot of character questions.
I mean, how many college athletes are there that you can actually say, "what a scumbag" about?
You know...after a bit of thought, I think I agree. Unless there is some proof that this is a sociopathic Armstrong situation (topical reference!), I can imagine a situation where this spirals out of control. Especially if it was put in place in the first place to be a beard. You're 21 or 22, you're on the down-low, you're coming from a Mormon household, playing for a Catholic university that is having its best year in decades, and you look to be a top-ten pick. You've got a LOT to hide if you're gay, and maybe you do something incredibly stupid to stay closeted.
Nothing but pure speculation, but I could see that as being a plausible backdrop to this. The irony is to think how empowering it would be if he had come out this season. "Hi I'm gay and I'm going to be defensive Heisman contender." You would have to have massive stones for doing it, and I think the recognition of that courage would outweigh the obvious negatives. But no one has done it before (in college football), and it would take the right kind of kid. And T'eo may not have wanted to be that martyr.
-So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.
What couild he have done to come off as ruthless or scheming? I have a hard time imagining anything we would have been able to see. On the other hand, we may be getting a true glimpse of his character now. If he is a "decent" guy who made a really bad decision, what is he doing now? He's playing the victim and blaming someone else. I have a very hard time finding shades of gray in his behavior if he was in on this.
Eating is murder.
Very true that we never really know any of these people...hell, we have a hard enough time knowing our own families and friends. But some people just give you a vibe. The look in the eyes, body language, what they say, how they say it, the way they carry themselves.
This guy is one hell of an actor and fraud if he indeed is a sociapathic liar. If this was Terrelle Pryor, I would not be as likely to suggest a hoax gone too large, and would instead suspect an elaborat scheme. This is of course all my perception and through the many layers and lenses of media filtering through which I see these guys.
So in short, yes, it is simply my intuition.
BILG
At least now Lance Armstrong looks like a pretty straight-shooter in comparison.
Thank God for hero worshipping athletes.

The bluntness of this breaking news is hilarious

What the hell did the Catholics think was going to happen when they invited a damn Mormon onto campus? Those guys always have multiple women, real or otherwise.
I mean, HELLO?

It generally is considered a liberal institution among Catholics. I have friends who are devoutly Catholic and not one of them thinks ND is particularly devout to the core principles of the Church.

It may be to the left of the Vatican, but I'd say on sexual issues its probably well to the right of the broader 18-23 year old population.

Maybe ND is less conservative than I imagined (though, shooting from the hip, I might additionally suggest it's less liberal than you just expressed). Even if so, that does little to nothing to make the "Closeted Te'o" hypothesis inconceivable.
"I have long thought that anyone who does not regularly - or ever - gaze up and see the wonder and glory of a dark night sky filled with countless stars loses a sense of their fundamental connectedness to the universe."
y plausible but completely baseless story is that he genuinely thought he was talking to this girl online but had never met her. When he could otherwise be swimming in a pool of pussy and choses not to in the macho environment of a college football locker room, he embellishes this to include meeting, talking every night, etc so the story sounds more socially acceptable. Then he is the victim of the death hoax. So I'm guessing it's the story of an insecure immature child, in which case i really feel bad for him to have to go through this so publicly

Original article on Manti and his inspiring rise/story. From before Stanford game.
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865564585/Manti-Teo-A-career-that-has...
From the piece:
"Lennay Kekua was a Stanford student and Cardinal football fan when the two exchanged glances, handshakes and phone numbers that fateful weekend three seasons ago."
"“Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there. But within the last year, they became a couple."
"Kekua, who eventually graduated from Stanford, was, in fact, doing so well that she was released from the hospital on Sept. 10. And Brian Te’o was among those congratulating her via telephone."
Raises questions like WHO DID HE EXCHANGE GLANCES WITH? WHO DID HIS DAD TALK TO ON THE PHONE? WHO DID HE MEET UP WITH IN HAWAII?
