OT: Daytona 500 tonight at 7 ET

Submitted by 74polSKA on

After several more rain delays, the 500 is scheduled to start tonight at 7.  I'm not a huge NASCAR fan, but I'm glad for the sport that they get rescheduled to prime time.  On the other hand, I am a huge House fan and this stinks that it won't be on tonight.  Thoughts?

Edit:  Apparently this is the first ever night race of the Daytona 500.  I guess I'll get over missing my show.

I'm not a huge racing fan, but will definitely tune in for part of it just b/c a night race sounds awesome.  I agree that its better to be done in primetime than during the day.  At least fans get to watch it now.

Chevy to win tonight, and I am going with my favorite Jeff Gordon. No one is really talking about him to win the 500, so he is my pick for tonight. Who does everyone else got in this race?

I'm a big Nascar fan. I was upset that it got rained out and rescheduled for 12 because I would have missed it. Hopefully they can get it in tonight. Go Carl Edwards!

featured quite heavily here every 4 years that makes me not love this site for that unbearable amount of time. Beside this little sidebar you'll never see me post about my dislike for it. I'd take NASCAR over that abomination every day of the week and twice on Sunday. And I am not what anyone would consider a NASCAR fan.

NASCAR gets me away from everything about the city, which I like from time to time.  I try to watch every race, DVR or Live.  Only thing I have to watch live is Michigan related sports.  And I dont watch for the crashes.  I think its something that the more you watch, the more you appreciate it.

the South Park episode with Cartman racing for Vagasil was one of my all time favorites, left turn cause I am poor and stupid. Oh yes just laughed again thinking about it.

Look at me spelling Formula wrong...smh. I'll always cheer for the Ferrari team and whomever their drivers are, as of the last few years it's been Alonso, and Massa. I know cheering for them is like cheering for the Yankees, but it's the way I was raised in a household of Italians, so enough said.

I'm pretty excited to see the sport come back state side, It won't ever have the same appeal as Nascar does in this country but I like that they are trying with a track in Austin and another one being built in Jersey.

Should be a fun year, with Red Bull looking like the favorites yet again ahead of McLaren, and Ferrari.

I don't have a driver that I'm a diehard fan of like with my teams, but I do have rooting guidelines:

-- You gotta pull for Brad Keselowski, who 1) races for Penske and 2) is the only driver from Michigan on the circuit.

-- Also, as with every race, I hope every Toyota either crashes or has their engine explode.

-- Rooting for Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson is like rooting for the Red Sox and Yankees.

-- Certain other drivers are on the "root for" list: Montoya, R. Gordon, Cousin Carl, Tony Stewart, Dale Jr., sometimes Harvick.  Mark Martin used to be, but not in a Toyota.  Others as situation warrants.

-- Danica Patrick is not a driver, she is a marketing brand that can get the car around the track 9 times out of 10.

Thes guidelines are pretty good.  I do have a fave driver, but its not what you think.  Bad Brad is my second fave because of Michigan ties.  I also watch speed previews for Nascar and right before the race, there always is an older Michigan fan on there with his blue hat and blue shirt with maize lettering.  All the other fans are trying to get on tv, but he is just hanging out by the gate and the camera always moves to him.  IT happens almost every week at different venues. I think that is pretty cool.

Brad is my #1 driver.  AJ Allmendinger is #2 (Dodges).

After that...well, I don't really root for anyone else.  I was a die-hard Martin fan, but now he's the only Toyota I won't hate if he wins. Kyle Busch has crazy talent, but drives a Toyota and is an ass generally.  Kurt...don't mind him.  Hate the 24, 48, 29, 11.  Don't mind Danica or Smoke.

Gotta admit to a soft spot for the Dinger.  Not even sure why.  But, I should've put "pull for Penske" among the guidelines, so he definitely moves up a notch in my book while he's driving for Penske.  I always root for Penske when it happens that I turn on an IndyCar race too, especially Helio.

The whole sport/not a sport debate that gets rehashed over and over again about car racing, golf, baseball, track&field, hell even chess is stupid in my mind.  At the end of the day these are professionals that are doing something that no one else in the world has proven they can do better, and getting paid b/c a large number of people want to watch them do it.  If you don't want to call it a sport that is fine, but I think we should at least appreciate their skill.

Sometimes I see the passion that Southern sports fans have for college football and I think I would have a lot of fun living down there.  Then I remember about NASCAR.

Go ahead and mark me as trolling, but I just want to say that NASCAR is simply awful and a waste of gasoline.

Anyone willing to head into a wall at 180 miles/hour is an athlete.  Those who do not think so are wrong.  I won't get into a big dispute about liking/disliking Stock Car Racing.  If you don't like it, even if you don't respect the sport/are of racing, fine.  I personally don't watch NASCAR and am definitely not in love with car racing by any means.  But respect the guys/"gals" who do it.  I find it funny though, many people who claim NASCAR is not a sport are able to call golf a sport.  To each their own.  Again, I gave up long ago arguing these concepts, but I still find strongly differing opinions interesting.

You misspelled stupid in your post.

Whether race car driving is a sport or not, the board is never going to be able to settle on one definition. But it takes a serious lack of self preservation to do that shit.

In the new #15 5 Hour Energy car! If you take a Big 10 angle, Ryan Newman is a Purdue grad (and I think the only driver with a college degree) I hope the weather cooperates and they get the race in
