Kind of surprised by this but good for him he deserves it. He defintely benefitted from Jets ample cap space so he was able to get a front loaded contract with large signing bonus.

Big Jets fan here, and happy with the move for a few reasons.

A) He's a vocal, veteran leader of the defense.  He's definitely lost a step with age and isn't very good in coverage anymore, but the new scheme (though similar to Rex's old scheme) will allow Harris to focus on the run even more.

B) You need to spend a certain amount of money under the CBA rules, and there wasn't exactly a swarm of guys better than Harris who we could replace him with.  I'll take the fan favorite who has been nothing but a class act (and Michigan Man, of course) over a random player of equal quality demanding the same amount as a FA.

With the B. Marshall signing, Jets need a CB (Revis, come home!) and to find someone to throw the ball to our players...  Overall a nice day for the Jets

Lifelong Jets fan, as well. Very well said, agree on all points.
Harris is a career Jet, still a very good 2-down linebacker and worth resigning with the Jets cap room. I've also seen people mention that Bowles got very good production from (fellow Wolverine, of course) Larry Foote in Arizona last season, and Foote is three years older than Harris.

here in NY.  Terrific player, always showed up but never sought the limelight or drew attention to himself.  Sometimes wondered if the non-Michigan fans even noticed.  Nice to know that those in charge are still noticing.

On another front, since you mention Foote, he was cut by the Cardinals a week or so ago.  Maybe he did such a good job of mentoring Kenny Demens in the same position that they figured they could stick with the youngster.  (Also the Raiders cut LaMarr Woodley.)

Too bad he couldn't or didn't follow Rex Ryan to the Bills. Not that I like Ryan, I do not, but I think they're going to be pretty good this season.
