OT: Dave Dombrowski is Scaring Me

Submitted by Seth9 on
Joel Zumaya may be the Tigers' next closer. http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20091210&content_id=… So, our current plan is to put in an injury-prone reliever with control issues who gives up an inordinate number of home runs at closer, unless we somehow manage to pick up Gregg in a very competitive market... I'm frightened.

And that's not all bad. Lyon got way overpaid, I believe fangraphs said that contract is an example of why the astros suck, and why they will continue to suck. Fernando should be getting nice money from Philly soon, meaning they will be spending like 40 million for 3 years on 2 former tigers who I seriously doubt will be starting at the end of the year.

I don't know how much I'm really scared about this. Zumaya is certainly injury prone, but his control issues have MUCH improved and when he's healthy, the guy is pretty darn impressive. A pitcher that can consistently throw in 101-107 mph range is alright in my book. Again, the only problem I see with him is that he's injury prone. As of right now, I like the move.

While I tend to agree with your point, 107 MPH, really? That's ridiculous! There no way he throws anything over 103 and there is absolutely no way he hits it on any kind of consistent basis. As for the move, it's not terrible especially with all of the other young arms in the bullpen that can step in if needed. It's probably better than overpaying for some of the closers available, who seem to be asking for a lot and aren't all that consistent.

Which makes sense. Perry is the most ready after Zumaya, otherwise your breaking in basically a rookie. They've got a ton of talent in the bullpen, but they don't have enough experience to say anyone but zumaya gets first crack. If he doesn't work out you try a mix of Perry and Schlereth.

Ryan Perry was drafted to be the closer of the future. That being said, he is not near ready for that role. As we saw last year, he has the stuff but his control is awful and he gets easily rattled. Zumaya should get the first crack at it since it was a coin flip between him and Rodney last year until Zumaya got hurt. Schlereth will be in the mix if Zumaya falters. Don't count out the Tiger's trying to acquire J.J. Putz (as Ultimate Quizmaster pointed out). He is from metro Detroit and may give the Tigers a hometown discount.

I must have missed that section the first time reading. It is never good news for the Tigers when the White Sox sign quality players. That is especially true of pitchers, as their entire staff has struggled the last few years (except Bobby Jenks... man he's nasty). Ozzie Guillen has already commented on the Granderson trade and the Tigers current roster. IIRC He said something to the effect of, "The Tigers will still content, but the White Sox are now better than them." I'm not sure if this means anything to anyone but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

Word on the street has it that Dombrowski is looking to trade Verlander to Toronto for 2 French-Canadian strippers, A toll pass for the tunnel into Canada and a six-pack of Molson. Take it for what it’s worth…

try to sign Petr Klima? Nice. Oh, and Lyon agreed to terms with Houston today. $15 mil/3yrs. Zumaya might be able to resurrect his career if we impound his dirt bikes and the rest of his toys. But to trust him with anything more important than ordering food at Subway at this point is foolish at best.

Basically, that when you trade a couple of all-star caliber guys you'd like to replace them with guys of that caliber. The guys the Tigers got might be that good--3 years from now.

I wonder if there's something else up with Jackson. Think about this for a minute. A guy with his talent, and his performance, is now going to his 3rd organization in 3 years, and his 4th organization overall right after his 26th birthday. Anyone else find anything peculiar about that? Something just doesn't smell right, but I can't put my finger on it. Other than that, this trade was a salary dump, plain and simple. Granderson's contract gets steeper over the next couple years, and there are three more outfielders on the way (Strieby, Boesch and Wells). 2010 is a transition year, and I suspect that the 2011 lineup will look radically different than the lineup we saw on Labor Day 2009. We could be looking at 8 new faces in the lineup, with only Cabrera returning (I'm operating under the assumption that Laird is still the starting catcher at this point, but not for much longer).

They're not playing for this year dude - signing Gregg would be about the stupidest thing they could do. First, he sucks. Worse than Zumaya. Second, why sign a free agent "closer" who is no better than your available options when you're trying to cut costs?

He's too expensive. Also, while Gregg was terrible last year, he did play well for Florida in '07 and '08 (too many blown saves, but his other stats were rather good). He gets a lot of strikeouts, doesn't give up too many walks, and doesn't give up too many HRs when he's on. Of course, last season was a total disaster for him, which is the only reason we're even in contention for his services (price-wise, that is).

The Tigers are shedding salary like crazy, with another $41.1 million coming off the books after next season (Bonderman, Robertson, Willis, Inge). Hopefully DD is just saving up for the huge crop of big name free agents coming up next winter. Unfortunately, that makes 2010 another "just wait til next season" season around here.

If you consider the trade as two separate parts it looks much better. Part 1: Edwin Jackson for Scherzer. Both RHP that throw hard with some control issues. Scherzer is a little younger but is comparable to Jackson at the same point in their careers. Part 2: Granderson for Coke, Schlereth, and Jackson Getting two majore-league ready relievers and a potential replacement is about as good as you could as for in a salary dump type situation. DD had to cut payroll and this was the most effective way to do it while getting close to equal value back.
