OT: Darius Morris and the Lakers PG situation
Next year could be really interesting for Darius Morris
The Lakers just extended on offer to DMo that it seems he's going to accept;
AND it seems like they just got Steve Nash, but didn't trade away any other PG's (mostly draft picks);
It'll be a crowded backcourt, but Steve Nash has to be one of the best in the league to learn from in playing the position. Hopefully it works out for Mr. Morris (and he develops a left hand at some point)
This is probably great for Darius. Signing Nash mean they won't sign Sessions or another young PG, and they don't have any first round picks like forever, so Darius probably has a good shot at being a) on the team for the next few years, and b) a back-up PG for at least a few years after that, if he never earns the starting job. That's a pretty good deal if you ask me.
It mostly depends on whether Darius improves. If not, they will find an alternative. There's a lot of competition for back-up PG spots.
I completely agree with this. The Lakers had to know they were going to be going after Nash when they signed Morris. Plus, like wolvinla pointed out, they are going to have basically no draft picks for a while. Maybe they trade in the future, but probably not. In fact, this probably helps Morris. He gets to learn from Nash, stick around for at least a bit, and probably not be challenged much.
We all know Nash will only be around for a bit longer, so after he retires, maybe Morris is lined up to replace him? We can only hope
I disagree. A young point guard needs minutes his first 3 years, or he is at risk of becoming obsolete and out of the league. Darius struggled enough to even make it on the court last year, and with this move, I can't see him even getting any minutes on the court.
Nash is 38 years old and averaged 31.6 minutes per game last year for PHX. If he gets 30 MPG next season, that leaves 18 for Darius or whoever gets the backup PG job.
Looks like I got MGOscooped on the Nash news, Mods feel free to Delete
Can Darius Morris shoot yet? His entire career depends on it. Sure seems like the Lakers are betting he is going to improve on this area with the contract offer, however, don't think for a second the Lakers won't release him if he doesn't improve his shooting.
Guessing 1 maybe 2 more years to develop his jump shot. Not expecting him to be Rus Wes, but he has to be able to knock down the wide open 3pter - 15 footer to make it in the league.
